Chief Joseph Chief Joseph was a great leader, he liked peace. He was tired of always running away. He was born on March 3,1840. He died on September 21,1904. Chief Joseph lived for 64 years. Most of his life was running away from the U.S army. He surrendered on October 5,1877 he told the U.S army “Hear me, my chiefs! I’m tired, my heart is sick and sad. From where the sun now stands I will fight no more forever.” This took place in the Bear Paw Mountains of Montana. After he surrendered, he was trying to secure his homeland for his tribe the Nez Perce with no fighting just peace. Chief Joseph feared retaliation by the government and tried to take his people to safety. They got captured and the Nez Perce moved to Kansas, but the fearless leader never gave up. In 1877 the Nez Pierce were ordered to special land reserved for Native Americans. The Nez Pierce ddnt want to go. Instead, Chief Joseph tried to lead 800 of his people to Canada. Fighting the U.S. Army all along their 1100 mile journey, they crossed Idaho and Montana.They were trapped a couple miles from Canada. After a five day fight, the remaining 431 remaining Nez Perce was hurt. For more than three months, chief Joseph led less than 300 Nez Pierce Indians towards the Canada border. They cover about a distance of more than 1000 miles as the Nez Perce outmaneuvered and battled more than 2,000 pursuing U.S soldiers. A lot of the Nez Pierc people became sick and died. Joseph 's warriors defeated the troops in several battles during the flight. He was admired by many whites for his humane treatment of prisoners, his concern for women, children, and the aged, and because he purchased supplies from ranchers and storekeepers rather than stealing
Henri Membertou Henri Membertou was born around 1510 close to what is modern day Annapolis Royal and passed away so September 11 1611. He was the leader of the Mi’kmaq First Nations band which was located near Port Royal and was the first native to be baptized on 18 September 1611 at Annapolis Royal. Before he was grand chief of the Mi’kmaq tribe he was the district chief of Kespukwitk the area where the French colonists first landed. As well as being the district chief he was also the spiritual leader of his tribe and was believed to have healing and prophesy powers.
He makes it very obvious at the fact that he is proud of himself, his accomplishments that he had made, as well as expressing how deeply excited for the great adventure he was going to have in Alaska. However, it also presents that he probably intends on gaining a citizenship again, even though he says that it’s like poison for him, mainly because he would call this his final adventure, which will conclude his spiritual revolution. And though he writes that he would not return back, he is trying to imply that he doesn’t want to walk in the wild to die but that he will not go back to the East. My group read a Nez Perce legend “When Sweat Lodge Was Human". The Nez Perce tribe was located in Northwest America but now has a 750,000 acre reservation in Idaho. The Nez Perce was a migratory tribe and their diet consisted of such foods as roots, moose, buffalo, elk, salmon, potatoes, carrots, blackberries, elderberries, pine nuts, strawberries, and sunflower seeds. From what I have read and analyzed The Nez Perce Tribe believes that In the beginning of time before humans all the animals met together in a group and had a discussion. This discussion was about the animals and what their roles in wildlife would be.
Chief Osceola was a very respected warrior and chief in the Seminole tribe in Florida. He led his tribe away from the Indian removal thought of by Andrew Jackson. His name is even respected today, over two hundred years later. There is even a small city named after him in Indiana.
After he was allowed to lead a company into combat, we was greatly credited for his bravery under fire. Also, he felt that the Mexican-American War was wrong and that it was only being fought to increase the slavery territory. After a 4 year engagement, he finally married Julia in 1848. Following, in 1852, he was sent to Fort Vancouver, in a place now known as Washington State. He deeply missed his family, and ended up joining failed business attempts to get his family out by him.

Chief Joseph was a great exponent of Indian culture for respect for life, Earth and men 's laws, and perceived Anglo Americans as liers. On his letter, he evokes the sadness of too many chiefs whose word is not presided by actions committed on those their promises. He writes: "I cannot understand why so many chiefs are allowed to talk so many different ways, and promise so many different things." I would have done the same thing as Chief Joseph, fight for what is right. This land was first inhabited by Indians and it was their right to fight for productive lands with water to be able to survive and grow their communities.
