When it comes down to viewing the environment, many individuals have different perspectives, especially those with different cultural backgrounds. Chief Seattle’s speech shows that individuals not only have cultural differences, but also have nature and environmental differences. Seattle’s speech begins by addressing the offer given to the native tribes about purchasing land; although the natives believed the offer was harmless, Chief Seattle began to ponder on the offer, but then decided to agree. Furthermore, Seattle disapproved of the claim that Washington made saying they were like father and son, by stating that they have different views on religion and the environment. The Native tribes see the land as a sacred land where their ancestors roamed, while the people from Washington see the land with no regard of spiritual meaning. Furthermore, Nature is a calm getaway from life stressors because nature has a calm and quiet atmosphere. The environment should never be tampered with because anything that causes a change in nature can harm any life form. Every hillside, every valley, every plain and grove, has been hallowed by some sad or happy event in days long vanished” (191). In Chief Tecumseh’s speech, he describes the tyranny and conflict between the united states government and the native peoples. He explains that the natives should not sell their lands, for they have no right to do so because the land belongs to all people and not one group. Tecumseh shows this when he writes, “Sell a country?! Why not sell the air, the great sea, as well as the earth” (L. 30). The air, the sea, and the earth are priceless in the eyes of many, he parallels these three with the selling of a country to demonstrate how the natives value their land.
Native groups often took land and materials from weaker groups whenever it suited them. They understood the concept of ownership by conquest. From the time the first settlers landed on Turtle Island [America], the Natives were pushed from their home. In 1783, George Washington wrote a letter to James Duane, outlining principles of the Indian Policy of the Continental Congress. Washington outlined ‘an enlightened People’ would consider the Native to be deluded and that “as the country is large enough to contain us all; and as we are disposed to be kind to them and to partake in their trade…we will draw a veil over what is past and establish a boundary line between them and us beyond which we will endeavor to restrain our People from Hunting or Settling” (4).
In Document 3, Cherokee Nation, a cherokee tribal member gave a speech that one part states, “This is the land of our Nativity; the land of our birth. We cannot consent to abandon it for another far inferior [place]”. Meaning they will not give up there land that they were born on, for somewhere else. Theodore Frelinghuysen’s speech, (Document 5, Theodore Frelinghuysen) mentions that a long, long time ago, God placed the tribes where he wanted them, which means they were here way before us, and we should not force them to move. Both documents infer that their land is important and sacred to them.
In “Then I Must Worship the Spirit in My Own Way”, preached by Red Jacket, and a “Lecture Delivered at Franklin Hall” by Maria Stewart are speeches that persuades the audience through rhetorical questions and connects with the audience in order to establish the speaker’s authority. Through a serious and passionate voice, Red Jacket, Sagoyewatha, defended the Iroquois religion during his speech, “Then I Must Worship the Spirit in My Own Way” that consisted of a mini history lesson and rhetorical questions. The New York Seneca chief, Red Jacket, was the negotiator between the new U.S. government and the Seneca. The speaker portrays a good reputation because he was given a peace medal for his efforts in 1792.
On the other hand, as the story of Ceremony progresses, Tayo’s Native American cultural background affects his morality. In the beginning, during a conversation Tayo has with his uncle Josiah, the book states, He pointed his chin at the springs and around at the narrow canyon. “This is where we come from, see. This sand, this stone, these trees, the vines, all the wildflowers. This earth keeps us going.”
As time passes the connection between humans and nature is drastically decreasing; humans have developed the idea of being the most powerful form of life on earth. In the passage, Hidden Lessons, by David Suzuki, readers can perceive and understand the author’s message clearly through the use of purpose and form. The purposes of Suzuki’s passage is to educate the readers about the severity of humans losing connection with nature, raise awareness towards this issue, and he uses the form of persuasiveness to prove his point.
Many people who go into nature always see it as something beautiful and aesthetic, but they never see the other side to nature. Humankind’s connection with nature isn’t a real one. They always look at the bright side of nature but are blind to the true dark side of nature. JB MacKinnon’s article “False Idyll” (2012), reveals that nature is not just flowers in a field but can also be the survival of the fittest. He backs up his claim by talking about nature through anecdotes and expert’s research.
The speech that was read by Chief Red Jacket to defend the religious beliefs of his people is a powerful piece of literature that is underrated. The speech describes the feelings that were caused by the religious intolerance from the Americans. Currently, the United States have started to appreciate the impacts of the Native Americans and other minorities in history. However, a piece of history that has been quite hidden is the religious intolerance of Native Americans. Chief Red Jacket utilizes repetition, pathos, and rhetorical questions to convince the Americans to tolerate the religion of the Native Americans.

The frontier ideology is defined as an allure of nature that is culturally spread and shaped by people’s ideals of how the wilderness should truly be. The problematic effects resulted by McCandless’ journey into the undomesticated land of Alaska are analogous to the quandaries that the frontier ideology creates for our environmental. Just as the ideology is embedded in his mind; it is also embedded in the minds of many others. However, McCandless story can actually teach us about the plights with our culture and in doing so, allows us to move forward. Petalesharo’s writing reflected the treatment of Native Americans during the 1800s. Being a Native American himself, Petalesharo was able to give perspective on a point in history typically viewed from a white man’s opinion. Through his oration Seattle boldly presents his stance on the issue of Indian lands, representing his people as a whole. On account for his native people Chief Seattle's stands up for their land through the use of imagery, parallels, and rhetorical questions.
