What is a child? A term that is too familiar to us even though it is occasionally queried for definition. A child, according to the Philippine Commission on Women (2009), is a human being considered by law as a minor who needs care, attention and nurturing. He or she is dependent to another person, namely the parents’, who facilitates the child growth and ensures their survival. In addition, without the aid of the parent involved in nurturing and providing the child’s primary needs, the latter cannot attain full development. Hence, parents’ involvement during the child’s crucial years is essential to facilitate the latter’s intellectual, physical and emotional stability alongside the child’s values and conducts. On the other hand, evolution in the child rearing process from the seventeenth to twentieth century had contributed in the formation of different practices and law applied by parents nowadays and likewise provides a profound path during the seventeenth century, times where parents are in search of methods on how to teach their children do independent tasks such as using the toilet, doing household chores and cleaning their selves (Berger and Kellner …show more content…
For this reason, to make their role more effective, parents integrated their child rearing approach with traditional ones to recreate a more suitable way of nurturing their children. In contrast to other studies published, claiming that there is a similarity in the approach of both parents, Medina (2001) stated that there is a specific border line separating the role of the mother and the father in raising their children. In this essence, it can be inferred that the difference in the type of child rearing practice used by parents to take care of their children will either enhance or hinder the child’s
During the beginning of modern Europe, there were conflicting views on the proper way to view children. Previously in history, the infant mortality rate was very high, so kids were treated more like adults and were often neglected because odds were they would die. There was a resounding view that kids should be treated harshly in order to become strong. Then in the seventeenth century, the idea of being tender and gentle to your kids was introduced. The way in children were brought up was influenced by assumptions made on both old and new schools of thought.
Many parents have different ways of raising their children to become successful. In the article “Why Chinese Mothers Are Superior” Amy Chua explains how Chinese parenting are better than western parenting. While in the article “Mother Inferior” Hanna Rosin explains that western parenting is a better ways of raising their children. Both think that their method of raising their child are better than the others. While both authors discuss parenting, they differ in the way they praise their child, the ways they punish their child, and the manner they speak to the child.
Abused children often have trouble having their allegations collaborated as legal and social service investigations of abuse allegations contribute to inaccurate eyewitness accounts and false memories that make it difficult for the legal system to protect these vulnerable children (Goodman, et al., 2001). Clinicians find it hard to classify abused from nonabused children due to a lack of a psychological profile for abused children (Kendall-Tackett, Williams, & Finkelhor, 1993). When there are no other witnesses to corroborate children’s accounts, investigators often employ suggestive interviewing techniques that sometimes shape children’s false memories that build the investigators’ reports (Krackow & Lynn, 2003). Some research has found that nonabused children
The Raising of children has been a topic that has changed quite a lot because things change due to the surroundings of the child and who they are bore from. Children from the 16th - 17th century were treated well based on their social status on birth, if you were born into wealth you would likely survive and if you were born a bastard or into poverty then you would be more likely to die of disease or infanticide. Although infanticide was rampant in Europe during these times it had been going for ages, like in Sparta when children were born female or weak they would kill them because they weren’t good enough to be born into their society. The adults opinion on children over time changed from loving their children to killing them changed a lot

During my time at placement I was given the role of a Nursery Assistant; My duties were to plan and prepare activities for children, read stories, nappy change them, observe and make notes for use in their reports. The placement lasted for four weeks and I worked from Monday to Friday from 8:30AM to 5:30PM. On my first day I arrived at 10AM for my induction and was introduced by the manager of the setting to the other members of staff.
We live in a complex, unpredictable world, filled with an array of family styles and personalities. Whether or not we recognize it, the family in which one is raised or currently resides plays a pivotal role in their development and opportunities. While we should not blame our circumstance on where we came from, it is crucial that we understand how our childhood influences why we are the way we are. One phenomenon that affects several families, particularly ones with low-income, is parentification. Parentification, also known as the role-reversal of a parent and a child, is not inherently harmful for a child, but it is important to look at the situation objectively and consider the risk-factors.
Parents are able to teach their children basic, but very important and fundamental practical skills, which could be used throughout their whole life. These skills, which can include cooking and laundry, are usually taught by parents to insure that their children are able to live on their own in the future, and that they can take care of themselves. As well, these skills can be viewed as training for their child’s independence, and they serve to prepare children for functioning lifestyles. Other important lessons that parents may teach to their children, are the importance of moral values and principles. Very early on, parents are able to demonstrate choices that are morally right and wrong in terms of society’s standards, and these values are carried by the children throughout their whole life.
The children learned basic norms and values from the parents. The parents supply the economic needs for the child such as foods and education (ResviseSociology, 2014). In a family, different person performs different role and function such as a mother should take care of her child. The important is the child can feel the love and support from their parents (Gordon, 1997). Family dysfunction may appear in broken families, violent families and divorced families, etc.
Child development is an area of significant interest to professionals who deal with children on a daily basis. It is through child development theorists and their theories that we begin to form an understanding of how children develop emotionally and socially to become fully grown adults in society with a moral and emotional compass/. Teachers need to study child development in order to provide developmentally appropriate educational experiences for children. Health professionals also need to understand this area to support children in their physical, social, emotional and cognitive journey to becoming functioning adults in society. Childhood is a concept that is affected by social context and also by history. Here in the West childhood was not always considered to be a fundamental developmental phase in life with children in Victorian times working from as early as the age of four.
There are a lot of charities and other organisation that are involved in the protection and safeguarding of children and young people. There are laws and legislation in place which all organisations and charities have to follow which is a basic level of care. They have on obligation to ensure best practise is followed to safeguard young children. Safeguarding is more than child protection and it promotes child welfare and it also protect them from harm. Safeguarding is to protect children from maltreatment, prevent bad health and bad treatment.
According to (King, 2008), child development involves in two theories which is nature and nurture. “The term nature refers to an organism’s biological inheritance. The term nurture refers to an organism’s environmental experiences”. The collaboration of nature and nurture, heredity and environment, influences every aspect of mind and behavior in child
Birth and Infancy (0-3 years) Physical development During the first period of a child’s life, we develop from absolute physical dependence to independence though the new skills and strength we gain each day. By just 1 month old a baby can turn its head from side to side whilst lying flat and has started to move it’s hands and arms, from here the baby’s motor control will continue to develop from the head, to the arms and trunk until the physical development reaches their legs and feet. While the baby is between 4 and 6 months old, the significant stage of the first roll becomes due.
Nature and Nurture Influences on Child Development Karla White ECE 205: Introduction to Child Development Instructor: Alesia Lane October 2, 2017 Nature and Nurture Influences on Child Development Describe the relationship between nature versus nurture. The nature vs. nature debate is the scientific, cultural, and philosophical debate about whether human culture, behavior, and personality are caused primarily by nature or nurture. Nature is often defined in this debate as genetic or hormone-based behaviors. Our genes determine the different traits that we have, such as eye color, hair, ear size, height and other traits.
