The film is a more fictionalized account of the book it’s based on, written by author H.G. Bissinger and downplays the more intense issues that plagued Odessa when Bissinger followed the team during the 1988 season (Briley 1). The film follows Coach Gary Gaines (portrayed by Billy Bob Thornton) as he coaches the Panthers in the football obsessed town. The film portrays the societal pressures put on young athletes, especially in a town where one sport seems to be the dominating past-time. No matter where these athletes go, they can’t escape the pressures to succeed in the sport and go undefeated.

In the article, "Deaf man sues PNWU for pulling His Acceptance" by Ted Skroback explains how the deaf student plans on suing the university. Zach Featherson 's dream is to help deaf medical students. Featherson said, " I am the same person they admitted-I want to begin my education, become a top-notch doctor, and serve the deaf community. Everybody faces challenges and uncertainties and a daily basis. Fortunately, for hearing people their troubles can be trivial. For those who are in the Deaf and hard of hearing culture, however, challenges and uncertainties are not relatively trivial. The topic of cochlear implants is causing quite the argument between the deaf and medical community. The core of the disagreement centers around whether or not cochlear implantation should continue to be considered as an option for hearing impaired individuals to improve auditory ability.. According to the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association a cochlear implant is “a device that provides direct electrical stimulation to the auditory (hearing) nerve in the inner ear.” Proponents of cochlear implants claim that hose who are born with or later experience a problem with the sensory nerve of the inner ear have the opportunity to gain the ability to hearHowever, many are now arguing that this device is not as useful or healthy for the human ear as it has been said to be. Those who oppose cochlear implantation, namely the deaf community, view it as a threat to the deaf community and its culture.
Cochlear implants are a medical device that help a deaf person hear sound. I believe these implants are a great way to help deaf people experience sound. With this devise they can hold a conversation with a person of hearing. The deaf community could get even higher jobs then what they normally get. They can better understand the culture of hearing people as well as hearing better understanding the deaf people.
The film, Reel Injun reveals a distortion of the way Hollywood sees Native American life through comedy and the real way Native Americans live which changes according to the current times. Neil Diamond sets out on a journey across America to figure out where the incorrect image of Natives arose from, all signs pointing towards Hollywood. Dozens of films recreate the way Americans believe Natives live as savages and wear costumes and decorated headpieces with feathers, but Hollywood does not show the true spiritual side and the meaning of why they live the way they do as true to their own culture and assimilated to the American culture as well. US history negatively affects Native American live which lead to the image of Natives to be clouded by imagination through film, changed the way Natives viewed themselves and expect to live, and misshaped the view we now have for Natives.

There are very few things in existence that can impact and help shape many parts society as television is able to do. With just the press of a button, a person can gain a front row seat to different aspects of the world such as politics, news updates, entertainment, or travel, without having to leave the comfort of their living room. Information wasn’t always this easy to attain though. Television, an everyday amenity, took decades of time and research for inventors to create. America during the 1920’s had very little in means of communication when compared to today’s media.
I watched Sound and Fury, a documentary that came out in 2000, centered on the complications of getting the Cochlear Implant, and how Deaf and hearing communities can differ upon the topic. Particularly within one family, brothers along with their wives and parents have a tough time deciding if their Deaf children should undergo such a procedure. They all travel to visit families that are hearing with children who aren’t learning ASL because they have the implant. They visit a Deaf family whose 10-year daughter is the only person in the family to get the implant. They also visit schools focusing on speech to help Deaf children who wear hearing aids and/or got the Cochlear Implant, and visit a Deaf community with a school focused on ASL.
It is necessary for an SLP to have a deep understanding of how to perform a hearing screening as well as understand and interpret audiometric data in order to have a better understanding of a treatment plan for their patient. They also need to be familiar with the different types of equipment used to complete a hearing screening. SLPs also play a role in prevention and early detection of hearing loss, which is an important component in providing speech and language services.
