In August of 1992, a man by the name of Chris McCandless was found dead in a bus located north of Mt. McKinley Alaska, by a group of hunters. The book, Into the wild, is written by Jon Krakauer who takes on the task of finding out who exactly was Chris McCandless. Through the book, we find out about his childhood, his school life and his travels. The book gives us a sense of who he was a person, his childhood life, and his thoughts on the world. Many argue that his death was a suicide but one can argue that his death was exactly the opposite.
Most people grow up hearing a saying from loved ones or friends “Do what your little heart desires”. Sometimes this human instinct will push out too far and make our desires the first thing to do on the list, whether it have a good or bad outcome on the people around us . We can see this everyday in life whether it be mentally or physically. A great comparison of that statement is the character Chris McCandlees from the book “Into the Wild”. In the book, Chris removes himself from society and everyone known loved one around him, even though he did not take a second to stop and think how this would affect all of the parts in his life including his family.
“Into The Wild” by Jon Krakauer is the story of Chris McCandless’s life and journey. In 1992, this young man, Chris, from an average family in the East Coast decided to cut off contact with his family and give up all his possessions so that he could hitchhike into the Alaskan bush. A main reason many believe Chris went into the wilderness was because he was in search of his identity. From reading this book I have come up with my own opinion of what type of person he was. The conclusion I have reached about Chris is that he was a distant and ill-prepared person who had a very strong will.
He knew precisely what was at stake” (Krakauer 182). Krakauer thinks that he was smart enough and a strong man of himself to stay alive for that amount of time. Krakauer does somewhat persuade us to think that Chris was a good guy and was quit smart to live in the wilderness for the amount of days that he lived in the wild. But krakauer is also impartial enough to give us an example of how Chris was a little bit lazy. When Chris was at the end of his Alaskan journey he was prepared to go home and he had all of his things packed.
Into The Wild portrays a man who went on a fatal unforgettable journey through the alaska wilderness. One may ask what is courage.
He went into the wilderness to experience adventure and to find things he was searching for; nature, the path to happiness and freedom. Changing his name to Alex Supertramp, eliminating everything he had, and only taking things that he needs. Jon Krakauer's “Into the Wild” is an excellent book about how McCandless traveled to Alaska, and how he conquered his dreams.

In Into the Wild it says, “ The more they talked, the less Alex struck Gallien as a nutcase” (Krakauer 6). This really shows that Alex, or Chris, was a bright person who, on the outside looked like a strange vagabond was really a well educated person. More important, however, is the fact that Chris had a positive impact on everyone he met. A prime example of this would be another traveler he met named Jan Burres. In the book said, “ We got to talking.
Chris McCandless met many significant people throughout his many adventures and endeavors. It is shown that Chris met many people throughout his many years of living as a tramp, which of whom were predominantly male, who had some kind of connection towards him. What about the females he met through his wandering events of living as what he called himself a “supertramp”. Did they have the same connection towards McCandless just like the males. Did Chris see them the same way they looked at him ?
