The original work of the greeting cards was made by Sir Henry Cole in UK in 1843, a civil servant (government worker) who had helped set-up the new "Public Record Office (now called the Post Office). They designed the first card and sold for 1 Shilling (5p or 8 cents today) but in that day it cost so much more. It had a Three Panels. The two panels showed about the people caring for the poor and in the center was a family having a large Christmas Dinner. The United States Postal Service has been used for many years, sending mail far and near. It is still being used today. Dating back to the colonial times of America, mail was delivered by the Pony Express, today mail is being sent by cars, airplanes, and ships. Our country is long overdue for restructuring the USPS. The USPS should be restructured so they can gain revenue, still have convenience, and to keep up to date with developing technology.
Holidays celebrate an area’s culture and/or the day(s) it commemorates with various festivities and traditions. In Theodore Geisel’s How The Grinch Stole Christmas, the light-hearted denizens of Who-Ville are preparing to celebrate Christmas. For the Whos, it is a time of fun and merryness, in which they sing and play with one another. This is a time of camaraderie and fellowship between everyone in the town. Apart from this is the antagonist, the Grinch, who dreads the holiday along with the singing, feasting, and other festive activities that the holiday inspires.
Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens in 1843 where there was a lot of poverty in England. Charles was poor growing up so his dad got sent to prison and Charles got sent to a workhouse. This is a story about a man that changes personalities in a little time. Charles wrote the Christmas Carol to show people to be kind and give to all people no matter what and to also treat the poor as equal.
It was a very merry day in London on December 25, 1853 as the village was filled with laughter and joy as families all around celebrated the ecstatic holiday of Christmas together. Wherever you went you would see people of all nature without a morose (p. 5) attitude celebrating with family, even the most unlikely businessman who the town knew as Ebenezer Scrooge. After the visit from the spirits who helped Scrooge realize it was time to give up his grumpy personality, he was a new man who followed one general precept (p. 51) which was to honor Christmas and gave every inch of his soul to make sure it was enjoyed by everyone as he loved to see the jovial (p. 26) expressions of joyous children and adults which was brought by the holiday. Eh? When I live in a world of fools such as this? Merry Christmas? What’s Christmastime to you but a time of paying bills without any money; a time for finding yourself a year older, but not an hour richer. If I could work my will, every idiot who goes about with “Merry Christmas” on his lips, should be boiled with his own pudding, and buried with a stake of holly through
He is excited to learn it is Christmas day, wishes others on the street a merry Christmas, and even fetches a young boy to go purchase a turkey for the Cratchit family. ” In these pieces of text, Dickens is showing us how Scrooge changed or redeemed himself. He was a greedy, grumpy man at the beginning of the story with no Christmas spirit. By the end of the story, he was exhilarated to be celebrating Christmas and was greeting people with cheer and spreading cheer by giving to others. A third example that Dickens utilizes
St. Nicholas “Children around the world know and love St. Nicholas-for he brings gifts and treats in December… ”as the St. Nicholas Center influences children and needy men and women since the 12th century. St. Nick helped many poor and needy people for many years and created a symbol of love and hope throughout the world. St. Nicholas was demonstrated as an influential person through the people he affected, his achievements, and his path to achieve his goal. St. Nick has affected people worldwide to be more generous around Christmas time.
As a young adult, I can say that Christmas gift giving is likewise to language. Similar to how I grasped the language of English and developed it as I got older, gift giving has also grown with me throughout my childhood up till now. Both have evolved into society and culture. Christmas has transformed into a "cultural ritual" celebrated year after year all because of social norms. The idea that society celebrates Christmas and gift giving without having to be forced represents how culture regulates societal behavior.
You may often come across the Christmas Carol story in many different forms but the play and movie are the most common. Say for example, the play written by Charles Dickens. This play takes place in various places in the city of London. The Christmas Carol play comes to life on Christmas Eve in the winter of 1843.(Dickens, 1) Ebenezer Scrooge is the main character who has absolutely no respect for Christmas at all. Matter of fact, he despises this merry holiday which is called to be the conflict of the play but Bob Cratchit, who works for him, is just filled with the thought of it.
The Civic of Christmas When most people think of Christmastime, they picture Santa Claus, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, The Nutcracker, and snow-covered hills perfect for sledding. At face value, these age-old holiday observances are just ways of celebrating the holiday season, or traditions that have been passed down from generation to generation. However, upon further examination, aspects of the holiday season have had deep-rooted impacts on our society. During the turn-of-the-twentieth-century Progressive Era, practiced rhetoricians took strategic advantage of the opportunity to connect the emotional appeals of the holiday season with the widespread social activism that unfurled across the nation. The landmark
When people are asked to name some of the classic Christmas movies, they are quick to say movies such as Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer (1964), Frosty the Snowman (1969), and How the Grinch Stole Christmas (2000), but they forget to mention the dismal, chilling The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993). But why is that, doesn’t Tim Burton still show the joy that Christmas brings, but in a slightly new perspective? Aren’t The Nightmare Before Christmas and How the Grinch Stole Christmas quite similar depictions of how some may deal with the “Christmas blues”? The Nightmare Before Christmas and How the Grinch Stole Christmas both originated as poems with rhythms similar to most Christmas poems. Tim Burton and Dr. Seuss both portray the cliché themes
The questions have been asked if a Christmas story still has the same meaning today. Its debatable defining which the book or the movie defines society today. Charles Dickens book A Christmas Carol portrayed social and economic problems in the industrial revolution Era, this draws the reader to focus more on caring about each other and addressing the issue of the wealthy not treating the fellow poor man with respect and dignity. Charles Dickens wanted society to change all together not just Ebenezer Scrooge, even though he encountered a dramatic self-change. The lower class and the children of the industrial revolution were indirectly the focus of Dickens’ theme, he wanted readers to see indirectly that there were two distinct categories
