Christopher Columbus: Here Or Villain Analysis

In the book Zinn, The author gives a point of view of Christopher Columbus that is usually not given. Most of the time the story of Christopher Columbus is told from a historian point of view. They usually tell you of his mission, and of the three ships that he takes in order to find gold and other new riches. Zinn informs us that he is not the hero that, that we all think that he is. It shows us that he tortured, abused, and overwhelmingly embarrasses the Arwark Indians. The book also shows us that he was dishonest. It shows us this by him making all of these promises to the people if they support his journey. The United States admires Christopher Columbus for the things people think he did, but his “accomplishments” and “discoveries” may have been false. Columbus day should not be celebrated because he didn’t do the things he said he did, he did terrible things, and he caused problems to happen. Christopher Columbus didn’t do the things he said he did like discovering America, having knowledge, and he never actually meant to find the Americas. Columbus did terrible things such as encouraging men to rape girls, having harsh punishments for people with minor offenses, and he lead hunting dogs to tear the Indians apart. He caused many problems like death, slavery, and destroying culture.

Christopher Columbus is portrayed as a hero in most discussions regarding him but in actuality he is a villain because of how changed the economic, religious, and social aspects of life in the New World with mass genocide of the native people, destruction of the native peoples’ homes, and the exploitation of the natives.

Christopher Columbus is a man who is commonly depicted as a hero and great explorer who discovered our modern day America, but many of the so called “facts” are not all completely true as people would like to believe. Columbus was undoubtedly a courageous explorer who brought many new ideas, cultures, and resources to be exchanged between the New World and Europe. While this is true, it is not uncommon for people to forget the harmful effects brought along with the voyages made by Columbus and the darker details of his times in America.

Christopher Columbus sailed the ocean blue in fourteen hundred ninety-two. When one hears the name Christopher Columbus, they tend to think about his discovery of America. What they don’t consider is how his discovery changed and affected America.

In 1492, Christopher Columbus set sail to find a route to Asia by sailing west across the Atlantic Ocean. Instead, he came across new land he called the Americas. Christopher Columbus thought he land in Asia, but realized he was not in Asia. He forced the crew members that knew they were not in Asia to lie. The ones who did not listen were killed. When he got there, there was other people there. He called them Indians( Natives Americans). He claim the land for Spain. He also helped spread the religion of christianity to the land he claimed. Columbus made a goal for slaves over 14 years old to hunt for gold. The goal was 14 a quota everyday. The ones who failed had their hands cut off. They had a resistance and were killed. He claimed San Salvador from the Tainoes. He possessed to kill, rape, take advantage, and wipe out the majority of the Taino Native people. During the time period of which Columbus first set foot on the new world, peoples views on slavery were much different than ours today. They made exceptions to it as everyone owned slaves back them (Document 2). However, physical abuse and torture are no exception. Columbus has been exposed for his torture on the Taino tribe. Every three months Columbus demanded a hawk's bell of gold or 25 pounds of spun cotton from everyone over the age of fourteen. Those who could not come up with the sum would be “punished”. By “punishment” he means having their hands chopped off and being left to bleed (Document 3). Every sane person, even in that time period would know that amputating a person's hands is an inhumane punishment.

Although they dressed well with various types of feather earrings and gold necklaces and earrings, they did not hold any value on gold or any other type of precious things they had. Whereas, the Spanish wanted gold because of money and this lead to them treating the Indians horribly so that they would become their slaves and help find them more gold to send back to their kingdom. The Arawak people were beaten to death, hung and endured other types of torture because the Spanish wanted more gold, but there was only a limited supply of gold on the land they were living on. Thus, this lead in many casualties of the Arawak people, and numerous Indians were later sold into slavery and brought to Spain, where they would endure even more hard labor

The marketing of products and ideas influence all people 's lives and has been a part of the human experience for thousands of years. This marketing can take on a number of different forms, but one of the most common forms is propaganda. According to Fleming, propaganda is the use of specific "techniques to influence thinking in whatever direction" the author wants and in most cases to "sell" an idea or product (3). Two of the earliest accounts of this popular marketing method, in Western Hemisphere, come for the letters and reports of both Christopher Columbus and John Smith. Both of which tried to marketed the newly discovered and settled North American continent. They did this by using propaganda to make many different aspects of this "New World" appealing to Europeans. These aspects included landscape, indigenous peoples, and who was meant to settle this "New World".

Christopher Columbus, a sailor who served King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella, the rulers of Spain, took off on a journey to find Asia. However, by mistake, he actually sailed the great seas and “discovered” an island of Hispaniola, America. This feat created a gateway for other races to colonise and live in the newly “discovered” land. In reality though, the land had already been explored by and inhabited by the Tainos people, a peaceful tribe that never believed in private property. A tribe that was very giving and inviting, they “exhibited great love towards all others in preference to themselves”. Columbus and his men, when they “discovered” the already used land, slaughtered natives, playing cruel games with them as if they were wild beasts.

A holiday designed to honor Christopher Columbus, an Italian explorer, who set foot in the new world on October 12, 1492, five hundred twenty five years ago. He intended to find a western sea route to China, India and Asia where gold was rumored to be found in abundance. Instead he landed in the bahamas. He didn’t realize until his third voyage that he didn't land in china but a land that the Europeans had no knowledge on. People have celebrated this day as early as the eighteenth century, but it did not become an official federal holiday until 1937. The holiday was made to celebrate the beginning of settlement in america by the europeans. People from all over the world may honor it many different ways such as a celebration of Italian-American heritage and to honor Native Americans. However many people do not celebrate this holiday inspired by the Italian explorer.
