Columbus – Hero or Villain Many school teachers nowadays teach their students not to honor Christopher Columbus, but to shun him. This is wrong in so many ways. Many people decide not to honor Columbus because he abuses the Native Americans while on his journey in the Americas. What many people forget, though, because they live such comfortable lives here in the United States, is that Columbus had courage. Even though Christopher Columbus took advantage of the natives, it is important that all Americans honor him for his courage. A common question asked in the very politically correct 21st century is, “Why admire a man who was searching for gold and tolerant of slavery? (“Apologize For Columbus?” 1) Many people want to apologize for Christopher …show more content…
This is what many college campuses all across the United States are like today. The students and teachers there are so brainwashed by the politically correct environment that they live in, that they forget the “bright side” of the story. Since the world today is so politically correct and everyone has to be “nice,” only care about one side of the story. The truth is, Columbus did not treat the Native Americans well. He treated them terribly. The thing is, that is all the politically correct people think. They leave out one tiny little detain: that Columbus discovered the Americas for Europe and is the reason so many people live such great lives today in peace. But no, that does not matter to the politically correct. They reject the truth, so that they do not “hurt people’s feelings.” Columbus was not a great guy. He was …show more content…
He also says that Columbus “was quite evil” (“Columbus Day — a holiday without a hero” 1). During and after the Holocaust, in which over six million Jews along with millions of other were killed, many people fled Europe. A great amount of those people came to the United States, with the dream of having a better life. They wanted to pursue the American Dream. They wanted to live a comfortable life with freedom; not being told what to do and how to live the government. My grandparents fled the horrors of Europe and came to the United States dreaming of living a better life. Their dream came true. They ended up living a very comfortable life in New York. They were working-class, but they were happy and that was all that mattered to them. Without Columbus’ discovery, there would not have been an “American Dream” because there would not have been an America. Columbus began the creation of America. Columbus’ arrival could have led to millions of unintentional deaths, but imagine how many lives the U.S. has saved. America has done so many great things for the world, such as, fighting for freedom in WWII, helping the innocent victims of terrorism in Afghanistan, attempting to end world conflicts and create peace, and so
Christopher Columbus There has been recent confliction amongst American citizens on whether Christopher Columbus should be honoured and respected for the credit he’s been given for discovering the Americas. Christopher Columbus committed great crimes in his lifetime, but he’s still human. Along with his crimes came amazing achievements. With his discovery of the Americas, he changed the world completely. On the other hand, he abused some of his discoveries.
Columbus -- Hero or Villain Many people see Columbus as a hero and even though he changed people's way of life economically, religiously, and politically he also destroyed the natives way of life in the process. Columbus set sail out of Spain in 1492 looking for a faster route to the products and goods from the east but instead he spotted land at watling island in the Bahamas.
Hero or Villain? Christopher Columbus, hero or villain, no one has a true answer. Although it is said he found the Americas, there were already natives there, so is he really the founder of America? Decades after Christopher Columbus sailed to the Americas and ‘found North America’, in 1492, Americans were put in a survey.
In the book Zinn, The author gives a point of view of Christopher Columbus that is usually not given. Most of the time the story of Christopher Columbus is told from a historian point of view. They usually tell you of his mission, and of the three ships that he takes in order to find gold and other new riches. Zinn informs us that he is not the hero that, that we all think that he is. It shows us that he tortured, abused, and overwhelmingly embarrasses the Arwark Indians.
Historians are now revealing a different story altogether, telling students that they have been lead to hold an ethnocentric view about exploration. I began formulating my opinion on Columbus in American History 1; however, reading the newspaper article Columbus: not a man worth honoring recently furthered that opinion. My original opinion of Columbus was that he had courage, sailing the ocean and greeting the Natives with kindness and consideration. From reading the editorial, however, I learned that Columbus had in fact done the opposite. As a result, I was inquisitive and thoughtful.
“To what extent did Howard Zinn change your understanding and perspective of Christopher Columbus?” Shea Pridgen August 25th, 2015 4th period Christopher Columbus was malicious and had more evil intent than we were taught as young children. Howard Zinn’s book, A People’s History of the United States, has the power to open minds on the topic of American history, more specifically Christopher Columbus. Zinn explores topics that people would be genuinely surprised that actually happened. It’s not our fault for not being aware of our history.
Those are some reasons why I think we shouldn’t have Columbus day as a holiday. Columbus was a hateful and mean person. He believes he discovered North America, but he didn’t.
Was Christopher Columbus a hero or a villain? Not everyone will agree on this topic because everyone has a different point of view in the way he discovered the New World. Most people would say that he is a hero. We celebrate each year on the second Monday of every October of when he discovered the New World. Myself, I find Christopher Columbus to be a villain.
When I was younger I was under the impression that Christopher Columbus was a great man and that he discovered America. We celebrate Columbus day because we honor him for “discovering America”. From this new information that I have learned today, Christopher Columbus is not the man iv have been taught about.
Inclusively, the professor explained that stories such as the flat earth, and the challenges Columbus faced while discovering America, only help to empower the concept of heroification. Surprisingly, Loewen explains that these and other erroneous stories are learned through history textbooks. Dr. Jendian explained that these misconceptions, keep students unaware of the real nature of history. According to Loewen (32), “The authors of history textbooks have taken us on a trip of their own, away from the facts of history, into the realm of myth.” As mentioned previously, Columbus is presented to us as a symbol of heroification, demonstrating how history textbooks contain errors about his real life.
Putting aside all the horrible things Columbus did, he did help colonize North America. He opened up a new world where people could go to freely express themselves, it was the land of the free. People could freely practice their religion and many could start a new life. Another reason why people don't want Columbus day to change is because of his Italian background. Many italian americans are proud of Christopher Columbus because of his italian background.
We should characterize Columbus and his legacy positively. Columbus was an intelligent person who had a good effect on the Americas. His voyages (indirectly) started the Columbian Exchange, which had mostly positive effects on both America and Europe. He was a (mainly, because nobody is perfect) good person, and should be credited for it. Columbus played a big part in shaping our country, which is a very important aspect when characterizing a person.
Columbus Day is celebrated in recognition of Columbus “discovering” America in 1492. Many consider him a hero for that one reason but don’t acknowledge what he did when he first reached America. I personally believe Columbus is not worthy of being called a hero for various reasons. One of the reasons is that Columbus killed millions of native Americans because of his lust for gold. The native Americans were kind and generous towards Columbus and his men, but he enslaved them and forced them to do his dirty work for him.
Some say Christopher Columbus was a hero because he was the explorer that discovered America. In reality, Christopher Columbus had an incredibly negative impact on the world because he enslaved the Native Americans, didn’t help the kind Natives when they got infected by diseases that the Spaniards had brought to America, and killed off most of the Native American population. The tactics he chose to use were violent and destructive by the standards back then and now. First, Columbus treated the Native Americans like uncivilized people by enslaving them and forcing them to work for him although they greeted him and his crew peacefully. ” They could make fine servants,”(document 2) he wrote in his journal,”I took them by force.
Christopher Columbus Hero or Villain ? Christopher Columbus is a Villain. On some accounts he can be a Hero. But on many other accounts he's a vicious Villain. Yes he discovered America ;
