Columbus had never seen people like those of the natives and the natives likewise so for both groups it was a new experience. Columbus took advantage of this and showed social oppression over the natives. He and his men murdered many natives and enslaved even more and forced them to adopt their culture. The natives were tortured, their resources were taken, they were raped and slaughtered all for Columbus’s gain. He made the natives think that he was a friendly face from a foreign land but in reality he only wished to use the intermingling of the two cultures to obtain personal goals.
Christopher Columbus should not be celebrated because he committed mass genocide, forced slaves, and wiped out an entire population.
One of the earlier motives that caused Columbus to oppress the indigenous people were the tiny gold ornaments some of the Arawak’s wore. This made Columbus to take some of the natives as prisoners and insist them to inform where gold was. Later, he got eventually coarser in treating the Indians, due to the gold mask presented to Columbus by al local chief in Hispaniola and the innocent, trusting characteristics of the natives that shared anything they could possibly share.
Apparently, life was described as “nasty brutish and short with no written language and no division of labor.” Observing that, he decided to change all of this and teach the indigenous the ideas and the achievements of all the great thinkers and bring undreamed-of benefits. Even though Columbus did help them progress further than they were going to get, what is the point if because of his actions all the natives died and can not progress for another thousand years anyways. If he really was looking for the best for the natives and everyone one in this world he would have made sure they had a good way to fight disease and a better system in handling the natives that would not result in the female natives to want to kill there
Christopher Columbus sailed the ocean blue in fourteen hundred ninety-two. When one hears the name Christopher Columbus, they tend to think about his discovery of America. What they don’t consider is how his discovery changed and affected America.
Columbus was one of the first fearless men who wanted to explore. His main goal was to find a different route to the Indies for trading. In this process, he took land from natives and gave it to Spain. Eventually, he thought he had finally made it to Asia, but he was actually in the Caribbean. He believed that he had made it to the Asia until the day he died. In this “New World” that Columbus discovered, he found lots of gold and quickly got gold fever. To help him in his search of gold, he recruited the help of the Tainos, the natives who lived there. Columbus ended up being very cruel to them and eventually their entire tribe was wiped out thanks to the European’s disease and cruelty. The Spanish also colonized what is present day Florida. Here, the Spanish tried to convert the natives to Christianity. They were very resistant
In 1492, Christopher Columbus set sail to find a route to Asia by sailing west across the Atlantic Ocean. Instead, he came across new land he called the Americas. Christopher Columbus thought he land in Asia, but realized he was not in Asia. He forced the crew members that knew they were not in Asia to lie. The ones who did not listen were killed. When he got there, there was other people there. He called them Indians( Natives Americans). He claim the land for Spain. He also helped spread the religion of christianity to the land he claimed. Columbus made a goal for slaves over 14 years old to hunt for gold. The goal was 14 a quota everyday. The ones who failed had their hands cut off. They had a resistance and were killed. He claimed San Salvador from the Tainoes. He possessed to kill, rape, take advantage, and wipe out the majority of the Taino Native people. He killed almost 7 million Taino, ruining their lives, cultures, and families. He also
On October 12, 1492, an Italian merchant by the name of Christopher Columbus landed on an island in the New World. With him he brought three ships and a small crew of Spaniards. After exploring other islands, Columbus came one that he called Hispaniola; here, they found seemingly primitive and naϊve natives that they immediately began to take advantage of. However, little did they know that this first meeting would bring exploration of South and Central America that would wreak havok among the Natives. Throughout the period of European Expansion, Natives were ripped from their home and forced to work day in and day out. Almost every single person from the New World, whether a slave or not, was seriously impacted by the spread of diseases.Furthermore,
For many years, people have debated over whether Christopher Columbus is a hero or a villain. Based on background research I have done, Columbus, to me, has proven to be a villain. Columbus forced the Indigenous people of America (Native Americans) to change their religion. He put them into slavery and abused them. They were also infected by the diseases that the Spaniards were immune to. He showed not on ounce of respect for the Native American people. This is why Columbus is a villain. General Summary of why stating there are __ reasons that will be discussed
First, Columbus treated the Native Americans like uncivilized people by enslaving them and forcing them to work for him although they greeted him and his crew peacefully. ”They could make fine servants,”(document 2) he wrote in his journal,”I took them by force.”(document 3)
During the time period of which Columbus first set foot on the new world, peoples views on slavery were much different than ours today. They made exceptions to it as everyone owned slaves back them (Document 2). However, physical abuse and torture are no exception. Columbus has been exposed for his torture on the Taino tribe. Every three months Columbus demanded a hawk's bell of gold or 25 pounds of spun cotton from everyone over the age of fourteen. Those who could not come up with the sum would be “punished”. By “punishment” he means having their hands chopped off and being left to bleed (Document 3). Every sane person, even in that time period would know that amputating a person's hands is an inhumane punishment.
On page 1 of “A young person’s history of the United States,” the text says: “They (the Indians) would make fine servants.” (excerpt from Christopher Columbus’ diary) This shows that, upon meeting the Native Americans, Columbus only had cruel things in mind, and he had no interest in making peace with them. In the 2nd paragraph of the website ‘historyisaweapon.com/defcon1/zinncol1.html,’ (in website list on newwestus.com) the text states: “As soon as I arrived in the Indies, on the first Island which I found, I took some of the natives by force in order that they might learn and might give me information of whatever there is in these parts.” (another excerpt from Christopher Columbus’ diary) At this point, Christopher Columbus only had two things in mind: slaves and gold. His diary proves that he would do anything to get these things. After capturing them, Columbus realized that Native Americans provided a very inefficient workforce, and this led the way for African slaves and the rapid increase in the
Do you now who Christopher Columbus is, do you now the real story about Christopher Columbus? Native American only make up 1% of the population today. Native American have 566 tribe to this date. Native American have had struggles through the years.
For instance, upon arrival, he pushed their kindness aside and made them work against their will. Document 2 shows how the natives willingly traded everything they owned. In exchange, Columbus decided to subjugate them for his own benefit. Compared to his men, the Indians were no match for them. He was
Evidence: “When resistance mounted a to the Spaniards’ violence, Columbus sent an armed force to ‘spread terror among the Indians to show them how strong and powerful the Christians were,’ according to the Spanish priest Bartolome de las Casas” (Huffington Post).
