Christopher Columbus: True Or False?

The accomplishments of Christopher Columbus should be celebrated because in spite of his faults, he was able to free the downtrodden Europeans, create a land of diversity, cultural acceptance and freedom, and by celebrating him, celebrate ethnic heritage and education. Columbus was “a noble-minded visionary who opened up new land of opportunity for the oppressed masses of Europe,” (M. Castronovo Fusco 1) giving way to a great new nation that upheld diversity and independence. Even though Columbus and his voyages had horrible flaws, “the symbolism of Christopher Columbus was that of a voyage of freedom. It really was the start of globalization of our world” (M. Castronovo Fusco 1). Without Columbus, the Old World and New World would not have connected and important technology and agricultural trade and tips would not have been exchanged.

Columbus -- Hero or Villain Many people see Columbus as a hero and even though he changed people's way of life economically, religiously, and politically he also destroyed the natives way of life in the process. Did you know that Christopher Columbus never really set out to find out if the world was round? Or that Charles Lindbergh wasn 't the first to make a transatlantic flight? In all actuality Christopher Columbus initially went out to find a new route to Asia. While Charles Lindbergh was the first solo pilot to make a transatlantic flight. The two men are prime examples of surpassing even their own expectations.

When Columbus sailed the long blue ocean to prove that the earth was round, he didn’t know that he was going to find America. Nor did he know he would commit genocide. Most people see Columbus as a big historical icon, but few know of his horrid works. Although Columbus found america he turned the native americans into slaves and any that rebelled he killed. Now Jean Marzollo may say that ‘Columbus was brave, and he was bright.’

Americans celebrate so many holidays and enjoy their days off without truly knowing the history behind the events leading up to the creation of these “sacred” days. Elementary school students all around America learn the rhyme “in 1492 Columbus sailed the Ocean blue” and celebrate his “discovery” of America. Columbus Day has been celebrated for two hundred years. Although the American population does not know all the details about Columbus. He was a greedy person and essentially started slavery in the United States.

Columbus Revisited- Hero or Zero? Columbus Day is observed all over America on October 12th every year, celebrating Christopher Columbus and his discoveries, most notably that of America. But is Columbus actually a hero? To many, he caused lots of problems, and the cost was higher than the gain. Columbus is a zero, not a hero.

What I was taught as a kid about pilgrims and thanksgiving is very misleading. In elementary, I like most kids. Where taught that Christopher Columbus sailed from Europe to the Americas on three ships. Soon after arrival. The English/pilgrim’s made allies with the natives, made homes.

Columbus Day Conundrum Every year on the second Monday of October America celebrates one of its oldest “patriotic” holidays, Columbus Day. Columbus Day is a day to commemorate the discovery of the Western World by Christopher Columbus. Columbus landed in the New World on October 2, 1492 and is ultimately credited with and remembered for discovering the Americas. The United States of America, itself, has always been comprised of immensely patriotic citizens making it no surprise that the so called discoverer of such a beloved country has a holiday dedicated to him. The idea of a holiday for the man who ‘found’ the ‘New World’ from afar, does not seem all that unusual.
