Reading The Shack affected me both spiritually and morally. It was challenging to read some of the ideas this book had, spiritually. Although, I related it to many different events that I have faced in my own life. I have related Mack to my own father and his strength towards our family. Also, I have related it to losing my grandfather, who played a huge role in my life growing up.
In Tim O’Brien’s story “Notes,” he discusses his fellow soldier “Norman Bowker […] [who hung] himself in the locker room of the YMCA” (149). Bowker symbolizes the pain that many veterans experienced, and how they sadly found their only escape through suicide. Yet, veterans potentially could have survived and even thrived if they had access to resources such as therapy, psychiatrists, and psychologists. When organizations supporting the idea that veterans should have opportunity to obtain these assets proposed this concept to The House Committee members, “members repeatedly balked at the notion that Vietnam Veterans required special counseling programs to help readjust” (Scott 38).
‘Five Stories’ composed by Michael Nelson Tjakamarra (Jagamara), is an acrylic on canvas painting. Measuring to 122 x 182 cm, created in 1984. The art piece is considered an aboriginal Dreamtime painting, telling us a story. Aboriginal symbolism is present throughout the painting with design elements encompassing line, shape, and colour. 1. Single stories are stereotypes that are based off of one perspective of a group of people. Single stories are built upon each other and define people;however, single stories aren't always true. There is a saying "don't judge a book by its cover". However, people of all generations are very judgmental.
Literacy narratives help accomplish multiple tasks so their work can fall into the genre of narrative literacy. Looking into Graff , Barrientos , and Alexie narrative stories we see they all share the same task, which is to share their experience with reading. Other task they incorporated into their stories was to share tips o how to read. For example, using cliff notes to give you a heads up on what you will be reading. Graff shows us how he used cliff notes to engage in a "classic" book, therefore he was able to annotate the reading.
