Citizen’s Duty: McCarthy : Murrow
Introduction
The film Good Night and Good Luck depicts the warless battle between television reporter Edward R. Murrow and Senator John McCarthy. Murrow uses his show See It Now to show that he is a man of justice, not a man that is quick to blame or become the metaphorical “Judge, Jury, and Executioner” of those who oppose him. He never claims McCarthy is completely wrong in his accusations, but he does bring to light the lack of correct judicial process and moral conscience. McCarthy is quite the opposite, a demagogue of a man that uses his skill of alluding to the fears of the public in order to complete his own agenda. If someone disagreed

In the beginning, the American public was quick to latch to anything they could, and McCarthyism was the new thing that everyone supported. No one wanted to be a communist or have them in America. But as time went on, McCarthy’s claims slowly proved unsupported. He neglected to show anyone the list of names he claimed he had of communists working in our government. Even his colleagues and closest friends desired to see the list, but he denied their requests. Additionally, the manilla envelope with the charges of Milo Radulovich’s father was never opened nor released (Clooney 00:11:36). True, physical, proven evidence wasn’t anywhere, making the claims of guilt …show more content…
Murrow was affected by the decisions he had to make, adn they weren’t always easy. When talking with his fellow reporters, Murrow opened up about his stance on one’s connection to others. He said, “If none of us had ever read a dangerous book or had a friend who was different, never joined an organization that advocated change, we’d all be just the kind of people that Joe McCarthy wants” (Clooney 34:50). Although it was not an easy decision, Murrow knew he needed to make a stand. He did a citizen’s duty and dared to stand up against the grain and expose the demagogue and his
Not only did President Truman express his deep disapproval of Joseph McCarthy and his actions through a personal letter, which included him saying, “You know that isn’t done by honest public officials,” but he also insulted McCarthyism directly for his ridiculousness. Truman speaks of how this is the first time in his ten years
He was right that there was a real threat of national security posed by communist spying and subversion. Secondly he had been right that the American Communist Party was a political party serving as an agent for a foreign power. As Venona shows, the Communist American Party did indeed have knowledge of Communist networks within the government, and actively recruited spies. McCarthy was also, right that the administrations of Truman and Franklin D. Roosevelt had been to slow to react to the Communist threat. Even though Soviet Spy networks in America were closed down by 1945 because of fear that Elizabeth Bentley’s defection would compromise there operations, American Intelligence had no knowledge of that (Ronash).
Because McCarthy is a liar and a bully, surrounded by yes-men, recklessly calling his opponents traitors, he commands great power for a time. He destroys others with lies, and then is himself destroyed by the truth.
People feared communism and what would happen if they would have to go to war and fight against it. While thoughts were spreading, Senator McCarthy thought to ask the question to others in power and in jobs that had many connections; television, radio and other political positions, if they were communists
He thought that McCarthy’s investigations were incorrect and the public had the right to know how cruel they were. Overall, Murrow and his staff left a mark on history. Their report and bravery inspired many to speak out against
Never before has such a detailed account of the evolution of the red scare within the media been presented. He accounts for every aspect of its onset as well as the resolution, attempting to uncover how journalists became targets of the anti-Communist witch-hunt of the 1950s and how the newspaper industry responded. Through his meticulous analysis he demonstrates that the hearings and the trials, while uncovering nothing resembling sedition or massive conspiracies, resulted in the firings of about a dozen newsmen who simply refused to respond to congressional inquiries. In order to better convey his thesis, which revolves around the communist trials and events leading up to (and during) the full blown red scare in the press, Alwood places emphasis on the lives of those affected by the commotions, those publishes and Newspaper Guild members who lost their job due to the violations of the First Amendment on behalf of those terrified of the potential of the socialist and communist parties. Alwood’s seemingly unemotional
The speech made McCarthy famous and led Congress to begin investigating supposed communists in the government. McCarthy later gave Congress the names of State Department employees he claimed were traitors. Those individuals lost their jobs, even though McCarthy never supplied evidence to prove their guilt” (Joseph McCarthy). McCarthy used a list he made up to gain notoriety with
During the film, real footage from the 1950s is used to show the brutality of McCarthy in his investigations. As this material was only available in black and white, it was only fitting that the rest of the film was also done this way. As an audience, we have never seen McCarthy or Murrow in colour therefore, why would we see them in colour when they would not match the real footage. When we watch Murrow on the television, it feels like we are the audience that he is talking to. The use of camera angles is also identical to the camera shots used for the real Edward Murrow when he was broadcasting.
With all of the accusations going around, people were forgetting that everyone can have their own opinion. Edward R Murrow, a television host of See It Now bashed McCarthy by saying “’We must not confuse dissent with disloyalty’” (Roberts, 2). Murrow was saying that just because a person disagrees with what the president or a government official says, does not mean they are a communist. The United States has freedom of speech, and citizens can say whatever they want about the government.
McCarthy manipulated the media, told outrageous stories about the communist conspiracy in the United States, and used his power and America’s fear to besmirch any opponents as “communist sympathizers” to make sure he remained at the top. Actually, most conservative members of Congress supported McCarthy because it helped them gain votes during elections. The majority of McCarthy 's movement attacked liberals and members of the Democratic Party and this aided anyone who was not part of those topics and organizations. Then McCarthy began to target the Army because they wouldn’t favor David Schine, one of his former investigators, who had been drafted in. “Senator Joseph McCarthy began hearings investigating the United States Army, which he charged with being ‘soft’ on communism.
Edward R. Murrow takes the issue of Mccarthism and we the people should not be driven by fear. Fear that causes accusations is not proof. He talks about how people let fear instill inside them. He also goes after macarthism and not actions of mccarthy himself.
The character of Edward Murrow embodies this belief, as he
McCarthy created the uproar of having a ‘witch hunt’ on communists in America. His influence on the people gave him credibility when he accused those innocent people. “He cited 81 cases that day. He skipped several numbers, and for some cases repeated the same flimsy information. He proved nothing, but the Senate called for a full investigation.”(ushistory.org).
This made more people believe that some Americans elites were actually secret communists. Which causes more people to be accused and be put in jail. Even though he gave the Soviet Union classified information, that doesn’t mean he should be trusted. More and more people are accused. McCarthy thinks that
Murrow explains on how the media should be used but instead they use it to suck in people to distract people from what the government is actually
