INRUDOCTION The Dublin City Marathon was founded in the year 1980, it was set up by the BHAA (Business House Athletic Association). Noel Carroll was a crucial part of the establishment of the marathon. He was an experienced runner and was knowledgeable when it came to what was required to put on a successful marathon. The first marathon was held on the 27th of October, it had a total entry of 2,100 entrants, which of, only 1,420 completed the race. Dick Hooper was first across the finishing line in a time of 2:14:16. The first woman to complete the race was Carey May, at 2:42:11. The Dublin City Marathon marathon is a yearly event, which is held on the last Sunday of October. The race is 26.2 miles/42.2km long and is a single lap race. The London Marathon was founded in 1981 by the athlete John Disley and Olympic winner Chris Brasher. The route of the marathon is similar to the Dublins Marathon, it is a mainly flat surface and has historic scenery throughout. The London Marathon was inspired by the New York Marathon and had 6.747 participants in its first year, the Dublin Marathon had 2,100 in it’s first year. The marathon is broadcasted live by the BBC. The male record for the London Marathon is 2:03:05 and the female is 2:29:57 The Tokyo Marathon is fairly new compared to the Dublin Marathon , it was established in 2007. It is part of the World Marathon Majors, which also include Berlin, London, New York, Boston and Chicago. The Tokyo Marathon is accompanied by two 10km races, like the Dublin marathon which is part of a race series that includes two 10km races and a half marathon.
