This are the existing situations of the slum dwellers. I have tried to show the how the projects was worked for this slum and in future how this helping to make slum free city. So on my concept is making a city slum free. It is also the part of making smart city. Mostly slum people are worked in informal activities. If the govts. Count their income for city level income. So that we can increase GNP for whole city. It’s also helping economically.
There are some cases for upgrading slums. I take a one case- favela-bairro for slum Upgrading.
CASE:

So, by 1972, 20% of Rio de Janeiro’s favelas had been vanished. favelas began to improve In 1993, the Executive Group for Low Income Settlements was founded. This organization started many housing policies, the society had to provide them with the necessary housing infrastructure, including utilities, transportation, education, health, culture, and leisure. After some years Rio’s City Administration in partnership with private companies launched a project called the Favela Barirro. This $180 million US dollar used for this project and it was create a “slum to neighborhood” effect. The Favela Barirro improved over 150 communities and has been responsible for urbanizing some areas, creating access roads, and basic sewage services. Santa Marta, was brightened up by the brilliant Favela Painting art project, created by Dutch duo Haas &Hahn. Thirty-four houses in the main square were painted in a rainbow of bright colours to help boost pride in the community
So now in Ahmedabad there’s one project is start for making slum free city Rajv avas Yojana(RAY). So we can make also smart city. Now AUDA(Ahmedabad urban development authority) making a EWS housing and shift them. These all schemes are helpful for decreasing slum growth. I know in Ahmedabad it’s not possible to make a slum free city, but if the govts and other parties are strong to making slum free city than every projects will complete easily. Also there is a one scheme “housing for all” is an affordable housing
Oscar Lewis’s paper, “The Culture of Poverty,” discusses many of the different ways poverty can shape people’s actions. The movie Los Olvidados has many examples of the types of lives one can lead in a poverty stricken society. Meche is a young girl that must face the harsh reality of womanhood early and Pedro is a young boy who does not know how to be good and suffers dire consequences because of it. These two characters stand out from the movie because they fit many of the observations from Lewis’s paper. Peter has no father figure in his life because his mother never knew his father and the other children’s father had passed away.
Gentrification is the process of improving a struggling neighborhood for affluent people. One of the main causes of this shown by Kelefa Sanneh’s article “Is Gentrification Really a Problem?” , is the real estate market. Things that affect the value of something in a certain neighborhood can end up having a direct influence in all of the neighborhood and can lead to gentrification. The construction of a luxury apartment building can attract more businesses and in turn, more high-quality living spaces which could eventually displace someone living three blocks away.
Many of the favelas have undergone renovations, and are not as much of an eyesore as they were in the 1960’s. Another positive thing happening in the favelas is the increase of medical care. The available healthcare mostly consists of basic immunizations and emergency care, however, that is a significant improvement compared to the 1960’s. The majority of people would agree that life in Rio de Janeiro is improving, but there are still years of work to be
The city of Tampa has experienced gentrification in several areas over recent years. The latest example that can be pointed out is the resurgence in Seminole Heights (“Once-poor Hillsborough Areas Make Gains”, 2014). Hipsters are now flocking to the area to eat at the trendiest restaurants and visit the newest art spaces. The effect of gentrification in this area is made evident by crimes recently committed in the area: the robberies at the tavern The Independent and the restaurant Fodder and Shine.

Poverty, healthy and slums were the part of serious problems for UK between 19th to 20th centuries, a lots of people who was living under the poverty line, some of people even didn’t have enough food for themselves and their family. According the book “The Classic Slum” published by Robert Roberts in 1971, which showed poverty, illness and social negative environment in Salford slum of United Kingdom. In the slum, there are around 50 percentage population who was unskilled people of industrial class, they were living in an unhuman and unsafety area, it filled of bacteria, hunger, ill and dangerous, it also showed the real situation of industrial people in UK. The construction of this project would not help only those future occupants of the homes, but also the people hired to construct and plan the project. Affordable is a necessity in today’s economy. Many people struggle to pay off their mortgage, or to even pay their rent. Affordable housing would help out many of the people fighting to keep up with hefty bills. It would also help out those who have lost their homes to rent increases due to gentrification.
In the journal “Cost of Being Poor” by Debabrata Talukdar, the discussion focuses on the price difference between inner city and suburban neighborhoods and how the price affects among the social class and statuses. Talukdar used objective measures when conducting the social class measurements. Objective measures of the social class consist of factual questions and in-depth information about a selected demographic while subjective measures only allow participants to envision their own stand in the social class. In the research, data was thoroughly conducted; Talukdar uses income as one of the measures. It falls under the single-variable indexes.
This process can come with the renovation of old landmarks and buildings or making new buildings where the old building once stood. The process when done correctly, has a positive outcome for community. Sometimes this process can come with scrutiny since most of the people of these higher class are white. Although there are many reason not to be for gentrification the purpose of this paper it to give my perspective on why I believe gentrification is good for communities. I believe gentrification within communities, serves a great purpose because it creates from what is dead, helps rid of what was bringing down the community , and overall make the community more pleasurable for everyone’s that encounters within
Homeless hotspots are something that is very diversely opinionated. Every individual may have their own say in this, for whatever reason they may think it is right or wrong. I can personally say that I agree with having these hotspots, because it creates a way for these homeless people to interact with others as well as earn a little bit of money. A lot of people may think that this is a bad idea for a few reasons.
In the article, “A Million Dollar Exit From the Anarchic Slum-World: Slumdog Millionaire’s Hollow Idioms of Social Justice”, Mitu Sengupta responds to how the slums and its citizens are presented in the film Slumdog Millionaire by Danny Boyle. Sengupta describes the slums as run-down and then goes on to specifically address the poverty that exists in India. When writing about the portrayal of the slums, Sengupta states, “Slumdog depicts the ‘slum’ as a feral wasteland, a place of evil and decay that is devoid of order, productivity and compassion”(599). Sengupta uses imagery to illustrate to viewers the unsanitary conditions that the people of Mumbai experience on a daily basis.
According to Preserving Affordable Housing is Green (2008), affordable housing during the renovation process creates healthier living environments. It resolves a big number of slums in many cities in the universe such as Dharabi in Mumbai, Kibera in Kenya and Kadwe in Zambia where lack of good condition and serious unsanitary. By this way, affordable housing receives positive idea such as “If construct affordable housing, then the remainder of the slum can be raised. This could change the whole lifestyle of Kibera” (Lunami, n.d.). Also, affordable housing always has sewerage system, fresh water and collecting garbage services, so people they do not have to live based on the dirty channel as well as let out waste water into the river or channels which moving around the urban center.
However, this project is faced with various challenges. According to Assad (n.d.), affordable housing provides low income families, senior citizens and persons with disabilities with minimal cost housing that meets security and building standards. A burdened individual, who could end up destitute or stay in a dangerous staying, similar to a denounced building, can opt to discover an affordable housing with a sensible rate (Assad n.d.). Home ownership can boost the esteem. After undergoing through difficult times, owning an affordable house is something a person must be proud of (Havekamp 2015).
Some of these measures are lack clothing, shelter, food and transportation. A lack of human capabilities such as skills, physical abilities or self-respect. This article which was focused on income-based poverty measures it also showed the lack of resources available resources to meet those needs. 2.
