Nayan Patel MS Construction Management Statement of Purpose The progress of any country is dependent on a good infrastructure of roads, bridges, railways, airports and other such other cost intensive facilities. Coming from a family whose chief business is construction; I was acquainted with Civil Engineering activities since my childhood and also understood how the field contributed to nation building. I would go to construction sites and seeing a building rise from nothing more than a foundation pit to a highly sophisticated structure always thrilled me. The impact of Civil Engineering on common man’s life and the diversity of work, only added to my inspiration to…show more content…
My role on site included surveying the plot, supervision of various tasks, maintaining the quality of the raw materials, estimation and preparing a weekly report of the progress of construction. Working on-site reinforced my technical skills. I also realised that the more complex problems involved management of the work. Neither my father nor uncle is a Civil Engineer, which often causes a dilemma when a problem arises. Our company would often suffer losses due to poor management practices. The undergraduate program in Civil Engineering has provided me with ample technical skills in construction particularly in the areas of structural designing, fluid mechanics, surveying, construction techniques, construction materials and machines, which might help me troubleshoot the technical errors that arise on site. However, the issues involved in the management of Man, Machine, Money and Material, can be overcome effectively only with a thorough knowledge of management concepts. In my 6th semester, I was introduced to project management through the course “Project Management & Engineering Economics”, which convinced me about the necessity to study this field in depth before starting a career in construction…show more content…
In the seminar, I referred to the annual garbage generation of in Pune city and its potential for generation power. I quoted examples from the existing landfill projects like Sao Paulo Landfill Gas project and the advantages of such project. I am currently working on a project on Energy from Domestic waste, which aims to exploit the energy potential of domestic bio-degradable waste. To start with, we collected the waste generated by the college cafeteria and used it as a feed to our system. After a detention time of 30-40 days, the gas generated was used to fire up the cooking stoves. We are now working on production of electricity using the same gas as fuel to the generator. In India where large quantity of waste is generated each day and power available is scant, projects like the above can help to use such waste for the production of cheap electricity. The project also helped me learn about many aspects of management such as estimation, strategic planning and cost control. In my masters, I would also like to take up studies related to ecofriendly construction and sustainable _____. I have done well in my studies and currently am placed among the top 10% of 80 students.
