Many laws have been ruled to protect the civil rights and liberties of the American people. The supreme court has the final decision in how a case will be ruled. Through many court cases the rights and liberties of the people have been spread to the majority of groups. These rights are still fought for today in the court of law.

The two main things guaranteed to the people of the United States are their civil rights and civil liberties. Civil rights is the right for people to have political and social freedom and equality. With this people are not allowed to be discriminated due to their race, gender, or sexuality. It establishes the protection for all to have the same opportunities. There were several groups of people that were discriminated against and left out of the mix. One group to be left out of the original were women. Women started fighting for their rights in 1848. It took many years after that before any progress was made towards getting them equal rights. In 1920 congress finally passed the 19th amendment. This was a huge step forward for women's rights. With this amendment came the right for women to vote, making them more equal to men. This amendment almost did not get passed. However it created hope and a wave of people fighting for their own rights that they felt they deserved. Another group that was sectioned out were people with disabilities. In 1998 Abbott sued Bragdon for being discriminated against due to his disabilities. When this went to court Abbott ended up winning because the disabled deserved the same rights as everyone else. As a result of this the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was created in 1990. The ADA protects people with disabilities from being discriminated against. This provides them with equal job and transportation opportunities as everybody else. Without people fighting for their rights, the world would not have as much equality as it does
