Civil War Causes On April 12 1861, the Union soldiers were attacked by the confederates at Fort Sumper. There are three main causes of the civil war. The first cause would be slavery; the reoccurring disagreement about its legality. Another cause was state rights; states wanted to make independent decisions. The third cause is the economic issues within the nation. slavery John Brown was a anti-slavery abolitionist. He was determined to abolish slavery. Brown decided to assemble an army of slaves. He stole weapons from the arsenal to arm his men. They were to fight the people for slavery. By the next day, most of Browns men were killed or captured.
