Civil War Monuments The Confederate monuments from the Civil War in many cities, colleges, and universities are being asked to be taken down. The monuments are causing problems between the U.S. citizens. Many people are protesting and saying that the monuments are a symbol of racism, and symbolism of traitors to the U.S., and are used to show white supremacy. These monuments should be taken down from the public but they should not be destroyed. These monuments are an important symbol of American history and should be kept in a historical museum. When the statue of Robert E. Lee was built in New Orleans, Louisiana in 1844 the percentage of white population increased from 37 percent to 66 percent. This information shows that people moved
In Atlanta Ga, Charlottesville Nc, and in every other formerly Confederate State in the U.S. there has been controversial debates on whether or not the current standing Confederate statues should be removed from public areas. Many people claim that a modern society should not honor the racist soldiers who fought for slavery. Others believe that preserving historical accuracy is essential to learning from the mistakes of the past. The opinions of thousands of citizens clash with one another over the debate between offense and information. I believe that it is most beneficial for the majority of people if the current Confederate monuments remain where they are.
In Mayor Landrieu’s view (2017), “As a community, we must recognize the significance of removing New Orleans’ Confederate monuments. It is our acknowledgment that now is the time to take stock of, and then move past, a painful part of our history. Anything less would render generations of courageous struggle and soul-searching a truly lost cause. (pg. 11)” In other words, Mayor Landrieu believes that the monuments should come down and that we need to move past that pain and stand together as one.
The Athenian Acropolis represents the pinnacle of ancient Greek culture and civilization, a center of religious and civic life that reflected the glory and power of Athens. Similarly, the Lincoln Memorial stands as a testament to American ideals of freedom, equality, and democracy, embodied by President Lincoln's legacy. The structure is a tribute to the Union soldiers who fought in the Civil War and their sacrifice to preserve the Union and end slavery. Both the Athenian Acropolis and the Lincoln Memorial are symbols of national pride and identity. The Athenian Acropolis acts as a living piece of history, whereas the Lincoln Memorial is a celebration of a nation’s historical
Many people associate the Confederate Army with only racist white men, but Confederates of the South also included African Americans, Native Americans, and Mexicans (Lenzini). In the article “Banner Headlines: The Fight Over Confederate Flags in the American South”, residents that were against the flag in Alabama wanted the Confederate Flag at the Alabama State Capitol Building taken down. They say that, “Opponents wanted the flag removed because the fervently believed that by flying it over the seat of the government the states were officially sanctioning the racism that they ascribed to the flag’s symbolism. Flag defenders, however, argued that moving the Confederate flag from the top of the dome was an affront to their Confederate heritage” (Leib & Webster). Alabama was one of the states of Confederacy and nothing will change that.
The flag has been used in many occasions for the wrong reasons, and it affects how people think of the flag. Although it seems to be a racist symbol, it is a symbol of southern heritage, ancestry, and it hold the memory of all of the fallen Confederate soldiers. Confederate monuments mark history, it would illogical to remove them. It would be taking away a valuable part of our community. Over all, the flag is a symbol of heritage not
The confederate flag was a sign of the confederate states and the fallen tributes in the war. The flag never ceased being the flag of the Confederate soldier and still today commands wide respect as a memorial to the Confederate soldier. African-American newspapers decried the flag’s popularity
Monuments of Confederacy The Confederate monuments should be a thing of the past and torn down. “The statues were built to honor the Confederacy and maintain the idea that whites are superior to other races. ”(Landrieu, 2) Statutes are not designed to simply remember our history, but the statues purpose is to honor and venerate the person or idea it represents. These statues honor the idea that slavery was ok.
When a flag is presented in a rival that brings hate and discontent to America it should be removed from being displayed. I strongly am offended of the Confederate flag and my opinion is a lot of others are also offended. The constant reminder of the mistreatment and enslavement of the black race is still being suffered by black people today. The confederate flag brings grief to my heart as my ancestors were subjected to slavery.
46,000 people marched to the statehouse in the year of 2000 making sure the flag was either taken down or kept up. No one can say that this event didn’t change our society when this many people were involved. But, there have been some unwanted changes that have happened. For instance, the flag caused our society to be unhappy with each other for having different viewpoints. The people who were offended, would riot across the streets of Columbia and cause bigger controversy than the Confederate flag itself.
There are many monuments and Memorials in Washington, D.C. , 8 of which I chose the Lincoln Memorial/Monument. I chose this sight because personally I think it’s a very cool/beautiful place to go see. I think this because of the research you can do on it and find cool facts on it. I also think this because of the view at the top where Lincoln is sitting. If you go to the top where he is sitting you can see that it overlooks the reflecting pool and you also can see the Washington Monument.
The issue of the confederate flag has been an important cultural discussion point for some years now, but has recently taken on even greater importance in light of recent hate crimes in South Carolina, as well as rampant police brutality and shootings across the country. Much of the discussion has been an argument between the two schools of thought being that either the flag is a symbol of cultural heritage and nothing more, and the other being that it is a symbol of systematic and violent racism that has no right being in a place of honor and reverence in today’s society. In a way both schools are correct. The Confederate flag is a symbol of southern cultural history; it also happens that that history is a history of systematic and violent racism, starting from the flag’s creation and on to its popular resurgence in the south at the time of desegregation and the civil-rights movement.
Should Cities Be Allowed To Take Down Confederate Statues? What do you think about Confederate Statues? Should cities and governments be allowed to take these statues down? The city of New Orleans had this problem.
In the news today, a continual debate can be found about the significance of Confederate monuments and if they should remain or be removed. Confederate monuments that have been erected throughout the U.S. should be kept because of the preservation of America’s history. For instance, in the article, The Unbearable Lightness of Confederate-Statue Removal, the author lists how slaveholder monuments aren’t the only statues being vandalized, but the Lincoln Memorial and Mount Rushmore are other symbols of U.S. history that some believe need to “blow up” (Murdock). Every historical symbol can have both people who appreciate it and who oppose it. That doesn’t mean that we should tear down all symbols, but
There was a politically correct remembrance of the Confederacy in that men felt so strongly about their beliefs they were willing to wage war and die for them, many felt that should be honored. My own understanding of the South’s passion with the Civil War is much like Tony Horwitz, In that the War is so intriguing and interesting because it involves the country I live in and the beliefs that are so passionately felt to this day. Born and raised in California I believed racism to be dead and the surprise I received moving to the panhandle of Texas was discomforting. The Civil War has a unique way of luring
Should monuments be removed? For many years people have been arguing whether certain controversial monuments, such as statues, should be destroyed or removed. A common type of monuments in this situation are the Confederacy monuments. These are various statues across the US which honor Confederate leaders or “heroes”. Many see these offensive since those people basically oppressed African Americans for years and were fighting to keep doing so.
