There are many different points and views that each side of the Civil War had on the war. There were many things that the Union and the Confederacy disagreed with and agreed with. Two things they disagreed on are how the Civil War started and the main reason for this war, slavery. One thing they agreed on is the Emancipation Proclamation that Lincoln issued in 1863. Both sides of the Civil War have different views as to how the War started. The South, for example, believes that they never affected or aggressed the North in any way and blamed the North for starting the war when they just wanted to be left alone. To support my statement, the newspaper, “New Orleans Daily Crescent”, documented that, “We have never aggressed upon the North...” and, “...we have only asked to be let alone...”. While the North on the other hand, believes that slavery in the South is wrong and that it’s a sin; they believe it must be stopped. Union Sergeant Phineas Hager wrote in a letter saying, “...the more I learn of the cursed institution of Slavery, the more I feel willing to endure, for its final destruction.”. The Union side of the war believes that slavery is “cursed”, or in other words, it’s bad. Phineas Hager also says that “abolishing slavery will dignify labor; that fact of itself of itself will revolutionize everything.” …show more content…
The South didn’t think slavery was bad and continued to practice it while the North thought it was a sin and wrong. In Document 7 it said, “Then the Northern people began to preach, to lecture, and to write about the sin of slavery...” and in the “Cartoon from Harper’s Weekly” it also showed how the person on the tree is the South and the tree is supposed to represent how the South grew from slavery. Meaning, they support
Even though the Northern states wanted to end slavery they also benefitted from it as well by making a profit off of the cotton grown by slaves, however, both the North and South were pretty racist regardless of their views on slavery. “Fondly do we hope, fervently do we pray, that this mighty scourge of war may speedily pass away. Yet, if God wills that it continue until all the wealth piled by the bondsman's two hundred and fifty years of unrequited toil shall be sunk, and until every drop of blood drawn with the lash shall be paid by another drawn with the sword, as was said three thousand years ago, so still it must be said "the judgments of the Lord are true and righteous altogether” You can tell that Lincoln is exhausted mentally, emotionally and financially, due to the fact that he’s sending in soldiers who are dying and the huge financial burden of war. However, it seems that he believes that the war shall not end until the price has been paid in full for the sin of slavery and goes on to say that if it’s God’s plan for it to continue than that’s what will happen until he determines whether or not the debt is/was paid. Slavery was very violent and would ultimately die a very violent death as
Northern also disagreed with the expansion of slavery West because they knew it would discourage free laborers from settling in the area. Senator of South Carolina Calhoun argued that Congress had no right to say whether slavery should or shouldn’t occur in new territory because territory belong
Union and Confederate soldiers both had different reasons related to why they were fighting for their particular side. At the beginning of war, Union soldiers primary believed that they were mainly fighting so that the Union could be preserved. Later, some individuals would realize was way more important than the cause of preserving the Union. The Union soldiers were now thinking of fighting to permanently end slavery in the country. The Confederate soldiers believed that they were fighting for primarily two reasons.
April 12, 1861. Confederate forces fired shots at the fort Sumpter and Union troops surrendered sparking the Civil War. Though, how did it come to this? As one can see, evidence shows the primary cause of the Civil War was slavery because of the many more slaves than free blacks, the Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854 fought over slave or free states, and Dred Scott fought for his freedom from slavery.
The North (Lincoln especially) wanted to stick to the ideals of the founding fathers and stop the expansion of slavery. They knew if they could start small, that it would eventually lead to the overall extinction of slavery (Document 1). Most people in the North saw the South as weak and morally wrong. In Document 3, it displays a political cartoon from the Harper’s Weekly, on June 8th, 1861. The cartoon shows Columbia, the representation of America, holding a scrawny man in a chokehold.
The South believed that slavery was meant to be, while the North believed slavery shouldn’t be a thing because of economic reasons. Abraham Lincoln was then elected a month before
The state worried that their economy, heavily dependent on the institution of slavery, would be at risk should the federal government seek further restrictions. It states in the document titled Senator John C. Calhoun (D-SC) "Slavery a Positive Good", "If left to themselves, we must finally become two people. It is impossible Under the deadly hatred which must spring up between the two great nations, if the present causes are permitted to operate unchecked, that we should continue under the same political system"(document 3). Many of the southern states believed that if slavery was taken away then there was no way that they could live together in a world without rank, especially South Carolina. "I hold that in the present state of civilization, where two races of different origin, and distinguished by color, and other physical differences, as well as intellectual, are brought together, the relation now existing in the slave holding States between two, is, instead of an evil, a good - a positive good"(document 3).
During the time that the North had been arguing with the South to abolish slavery, the South believed that if slavery was to be abolished that their economy would be destroyed because their slaves were the only ones picking cotton and other crops but the South did not want wage labor instead they wanted the slaves to do the hard work while they get paid. Social diversities between the North and the South was not the only conflict differentiating the two but so was their economical
The two out four questions that I choose are to 1.) Discuss the causes of the civil war. Cite as many facts as possible to back up your analysis. And answer 2.) If the enduring vision of America is embodied in the Declaration of Independence's statements about equality and universal rights to justice, liberty, and self-fulfillment, how much progress toward those ideals had blacks and women made by 1877?
The South used Christianity to justify slavery and the war itself. The South believed that slavery should
The North and the South had differing points of view on the Civil War, with the North feeling the war was absolutely necessary and the South believing that the North was responsible for this attack on their freedom and lifestyle. The Civil War was, for clear reasons, a controversial and dividing issue throughout all of America. The North and the South were at odds for a long period of time prior to the war, with various political and social actions and reforms only adding to the tension between the two regions. The war was not caused by a few large events, rather it was the accumulation of various events and actions taken by the North and South that angered the respective opposing side. While many events contributed and led to the conflict,
The Southerners seem to feel that the government is becoming an advocate of the North and they will not stand for that. As a result they continuously voice their concerns and will defy the government if it is required in order to mold others view on slavery so that they are able to see slavery as perpetual as the Southerners believe it to be. Because of this the Southerners won’t give up on developing a society where slavery is flourishing because they believe that slaves are a necessity in order to have a functioning society, meanwhile the Northerners will do whatever they can to ensure all slaves are able to live
First of all, The Northerners and Southerners were fighting for completely different reasons. Northerners thought they were fighting to save the union. They believed that slavery was morally wrong and that it needed to be abolished.” The abolitionists saw slavery as an abomination and an affliction on the United States, making it their goal
The South wanted to secede from the country to gain independence, and it would allow them to keep slavery legal in their “own country”. The South did not have the right to just
Northern viewpoints on the Civil War were multifaceted, with a primary focus on preserving the Union and upholding principles of liberty and equality. Many Northerners saw the war as a moral battle against the institution of slavery, considering it a violation of human rights. The abolitionist movement played a
