“Yesterday is not ours to recover, but tomorrow is ours to win or lose” Lyndon B. Johnson. The civil war, a sad time for Americans, separated the country over slavery and states rights. This led to the deaths of over 600,000 Americans between Union and Confederate soldiers. Out of the eleven confederate states, Texas was one of them. Texans fought in the civil war to defend state’s rights, preserve slaves, and for the love of Texas. One of the reason Texans fought in the civil war, was to maintain states rights. At the time states had the right to secede from the Union or United States. According to document C,“The crisis upon us involves not only the right of self- government, but the maintenance of a great principle in the law of nations… the true theory of our (national) government as an association of sovereignties (independent states), and not a blended mass of people in one social compact.” When Abraham Lincoln was elected president in 1860, many people in the south were upset with this. Lincoln would take away slaves which in the south's minds, this violated their states rights, to keep slaves. According to document D,”Tell him not to enlist till just before they go and draft him and only enlist for Texas service”. This meant that people in the south would only want to fight for Texas and Texas only. Since Texan soldiers were known to the south as the best soldiers around because of the Texas- Mexican war that happened several years before. Texans always knew themselves as Texans before saying being apart of the United States. Texans only wanted to fight for Texas not for other allies or states. They already worked for their independence from the civil war but now have to work for freedom from the
