In Lincoln 's inaugural speech he said "This country, with its institutions, belongs to the people who inhabit it. Whenever they shall grow weary of the existing Government, they can exercise their 'constitutional ' right of amending it or they are 'revolutionary ' right to dismember or overthrow it"(Abraham Lincoln 's First Inaugural Address). The 12th of April 1861, the Civil War began. There were many conflicts between the two sides. Many believe it was a fight for the rights and freedom of slaves, so what was the main cause of the Civil War was the issue of states rights and the preservation of the Union than rather than the issue of slavery.
He calls these battles from 1861-1863. After the defeat at Gettysburg in 1863 the southern cause was doomed. The South did not have the resources to fight a long war. At the outset the North numbered 20 million people; the South had only nine million, four million of these were slaves. The Federals waged a war against Southern civilians destroying their crops, their cities, and their homes.
With no final agreement, the country had no other choice but to go to war with itself. The slow decline of the, once powerful, Southern economy and the major issue of the abolishment of slaves are what led to the cause of the American Civil War. While economics and political structure played an important role in the cause of the Civil War, slavery was the main reason why altercations arose. Many historians and teachers try to hide the fact that slavery was such a huge factor in the cause of the Civil War because they looked at slavery as the “norm”. To them, the differences between the Republicans and Democratic formed great disagreement.
The tension created a conflict that raised a number of political, social, and military events that then proceeded into a battle to abolish slavery from the colonies. After that, In April 1861, the the first shot of the war was fired and more than 600,000 soldiers were killed and wounded. A large portion of the South was consumed by violent battles, making the Union nearly
The Civil War has caused one nation to be divided into two sub nations all while president Abraham Lincoln is in office. President Lincoln abolished slavery, which in turn caused the Civil War. Abolishing slavery naturally gave Lincoln enemies all throughout the south but only a few people acted. John Wilkes Booth met with three culprits who created a master plain to kill the president. The Civil War is what started Abraham Lincoln’s downfall; there for, this act leads to and causes the assassination of Lincoln.
Preparing for the abolition of the implemented throughout 1862. December 30, 1862, the president signed "Emancipation Proclamation", announced blacks living in the territories in rebellion against the United States, "now and forever" free. The document gave impetus to the adoption of Amendment XIII (1865) to the US Constitution. Proclamation been rightly criticized by radical Republicans, since the emancipation of slaves was carried out where it is not distributed power of the federal government, but it has changed the nature of the Civil War, turning it into a war for the abolition of slavery. In addition, it has forced foreign countries, including the UK, do not support the Confederacy.
It is eerily personal, as we complete this course reading about the civil war and living through today’s adversarial climate of protesters, division of social, economic and political parties. As Abraham Lincoln said in the Gettysburg Address “and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from this earth” (Lincoln 428). The Civil War, while largely believed to be largely about slavery it appears to me that state’s right played just as an important role in the actual cause and continuance of the war. The division of the states and their prosperity, industry, education and representation in Congress divided this country, much as it is today. The economic impact of the war as is true in most if not all cases of war are that the spoils of war are the reward of the victors.
He guided his country through the most devastating experience in its national history, the ultimate strife from westward expansion the Civil War. Lincoln's victory in that election thus changed the racial future of the United States. The westward expansion of slavery was one of the most dynamic economic and social processes going on in this country” (Foner, E). Political deals, such as the Missouri Compromise in 1820, Compromise of 1850, Supreme Court rulings, and the Dred Scott decision in 1857, divided the country drastically. These divisions went far beyond cotton and economics.
During the war, slavery became the most prominent issue. Black men and white men fought alongside each other. The war brought a much stronger federal government while the state governments still had rights over themselves. The federal government had to get control again over the major issues and topics. Since the Emancipation Proclamation, it gave freedom to all African Americans.
The American Civil War was fought between the Northern and Southern states between 1861 and 1865. It is thought to be one of the most destructive events in American history, costing more than 600,000 lives. Today as you read about the causes of the war, slavery is given as the main and almost sole reason for the conflict. This is certainly not the case. One example would be the statement in the Congressional Record of United States where it documents the war was not fought to abolish slavery.
