Discussion on “Classroom management: Case of John and his troublesome students
“The mediocre teacher tells. The good teacher explains. The superior teacher demonstrates. The great teacher inspires,” this quotation from William Arthur Ward summarizes the different types of teacher every student might encounter in their school life. In the case of John, I will categorize him as a mediocre teacher who still lacks the years of experience that Principal Davis has acquired after decades of experience and exposure to different personality types. Still, I can commend John for having the presence of mind and enough patience to avoid getting provoked by his students’ disrespectful behaviour. However, I can also say that John is not competent enough in handling difficult students like Richard.

Having a friendly connection with difficult students is an easy way to manage the whole class because if they like the teacher, then the teacher will have a powerful influence on their behavior. So when teachers speak to difficult students, they should avoid talking about behavior issues. Instead, they should discuss common interests and work on getting to know them for the sake of getting to know them just like what Principal Davis has been doing the past ten years. In fact, Richard was opening up to his teacher when he told John that he would miss his ride if he’d be in detention.
