“There are many people in this world. They will help you if you let them.” Claudia Rankine started with a quote when she were told by someone before as her lesson of her life. She said she chose the image for the opening of the book because it greatly reflected segregation is the heart problem of America. The second image was the animal face. She retold the story of her friend went to a therapist in California. She said color people are worthless in their eyes. The sculpture creator originally created a face of a black happy girl, instead of a disappointed, no emotional face which Rankine choose to appear in the book. She explained the disappointed, emotionless face represented the true about color people instead of a happy proud face of a black girl. Also, she explained why it is a deer instead of some other animal. It is a deer because a deer can run fast, so they can get out of trouble and problems in their difficult life. Mamie specifically wrote this book to tell her son’s story, representing hope and forgiveness, which revealed the sinister and illegal punishments of the south. Thousands of women have screamed at the top of their lungs, clawed at the patriarchy, and tirelessly fought for their rights as citizens of the United States of America. From the beginning of mankind, women have been labeled as inferior to men not only physically, but mentally and intellectually as well. Only in 1920 did women gain the right to voice their opinions in government elections while wealthy white men received the expected right since the creation of the United States. A pioneer in women’s suffrage, Susan B. Anthony publicly spoke out against this hypocrisy in a time when women were only seen as child bearers and household keepers. Using the United State’s very own Constitution and Declaration as ammunition, Anthony wrote countless
The poet, Lascelles Abercrombie once said, “There is only one thing which can master the perplexed stuff of epic material into unity; and that is, an ability to see in particular human experience some significant symbolism of man 's general destiny.”. He talked about how powerful of a tool symbolism is and how it is the only thing that can truly define a highly complex ‘destiny’ or series of events. Symbolism is something that is found throughout Harper Lee’s book, To Kill a Mockingbird. Lee shows the reader that racism is a product of society, she portrays the matter through her symbolism of the mad dog, the birds and the bugs.
For instance, there is an understanding of the woman’s feelings as she describes “a recurrent spot where the pattern lolls like a broken neck and two bulbous eyes stare at you upside down” and the pattern looking at her “as if it knew what a vicious influence it had” (Gilman 437). The personification is symbolic in displaying how the woman felt as she was stuck in the lonely room with allowance of her husband and Jennie, their child’s nanny, keeping their eyes on her with the dependence of her healing. Additionally, the woman specifies that behind the yellow wallpaper she can see “a strange, provoking, formless sort of figure, that seems to sulk about behind that silly and conspicuous front design” (Gilman 438). As the appearance of the wallpaper is personified, the author taps into the hidden meaning that the woman’s sickness is taunting her as she is attempting to heal. In the end, readers are given the most significant piece of personification in the statement, “and then when the sun came and that awful pattern began to laugh at me, I declared that I would finish it today!”
She was quite extraordinarily pretty, pink and white, with large pale-blue eyes, and sparse little golden curls all over her head and neck, through which her pink skin could be seen.” (354). After knowing what the characters look like, this leads to the theme and symbols in the
This provides evidence that many critics and readers also agree that the portraits are not just pictures, but symbols that affect the story greatly. It is evident that the portraits are used to show how Lucy’s disappearance traumatized Lois to the point that she can not move on with her

Symbols are so important in stories because they can be interpreted so many ways to the reader. The white elephant was a symbol of its own, but the two parts of the whole made the idea of a white elephant more complex. White is the color of purity, innocence, and in some cases, it has been said the true color of mourning. All these take place in “Hills Like White Elephants”. The color of purity and innocence is a contrast to the story as the couple has clearly had sex and are now pregnant with a child.
The author used symbolism throughout the whole story to show the difference between these characters. The symbolism is there to give us a further explanation on the family and also to tell us how much heritage is important to some, but not others. The first symbol
Simone Van Iderstine was 16 years old when she became pregnant with her first child, Eve MacKinnon. Eve was an accident, she was not supposed to be a result of what happened that night at the party. Simone then had to face what she would find the most stressful out of the whole pregnancy; telling her mother, Tanya O’Connor Flynn. Tanya was not very happy with that news.

The story takes place at the height of the Civil Rights Movement in America, when desegregation is finally achieved. Flannery O’Connor’s use of setting augments the mood and deepens the context of the story. However, O’Connor’s method is subtle, often relying on connotation and implication to drive her point across. The story achieves its depressing mood mostly through the use of light and darkness in the setting.
Because different characters possess different qualities based on their experiences. Symbols are used to illustrate both the beauty and the ugliness in humanity. And the setting in which the character is raised has either a negative or positive effect on the characters actions. This topic is relevant because it is important to understand that the slightest things such as the tone you use to raise a child can have an effect on the way they will conduct themselves in the
One of the three main symbols used were the grandmothers clothing. This was shown by in the beginning she cared solely about how others saw her whereas towards the end she didn't care for her apparel and truly on cared for finding grace and redemption. Another main symbol used was the weather.
