This week we had our orientation at Holy Spirit Hospital in Camp Hill. On Monday, in the Fundamentals of Nursing class, we learned different oxygenation therapy for the patients. We had a chance to go to the Sim Lab and see different types of equipment such as the nasal cannula, venturi mask, simple oxygen face mask, re-breather mask, pulse ox machine and the oxygen flow meter. Although, we were not able to use on the simulation mannequins, we were able to see what they look like and how you would use them.
On Tuesday, in the clinical lab, we learned how to change patient’s gown that has an IV attached to their arm. This was a new clinical skill we learned this week, which was very important because many patients in the hospitals do have IV pumps and other things attached to them. We have to be careful, not to disconnect any of it, since it could affect the patient. When practicing the skill, I did not have any particular challenges with it, as it was very straightforward.

I think that this was a good time to learn how to actually use the patient chart. I did not have many difficulties with it, but there were many different charting and things we needed to know for Sim chart, but I think that when I will be using it often, I will have more practice with charting online and accessing information. SimChart is a great tool where different materials can be accessed and help to tract and save the patient’s records. Furthermore, this day, we had further information about the clinical for Holy Spirit and what the expectations

Bedside reporting has been shown to improve communication and quality of handoff between nurses. It is also credited to promote patient safety and improve patient satisfaction. Patient satisfaction, patient safety and nursing communication and quality of report from a 32 bed surgical hospital in Dallas, Texas is to be evaluated using various surveys, HCAHPS scores, incident reports, and call light logs. Data will be collected 2 months prior and 6 months following the implementation of bedside report. Scores and communication survey results will be reviewed in this time period to determine increases or decreases from pre-implementation results using traditional nurse-to-nurse report..
Then we were ready to interact with the patient. The patient was in his room, so I asked a nurse technician to direct the patient to stay in the day room for a while. We started to assess the patient when he was walking to the day room. We engaged in about ten minutes of conversation with the patient and got some information including suicidal ideation assessment. After the conversation, we also noticed how the patient interacted with staff and other patients.
The Indiana State Board of Nursing (2011) defines advanced practice nursing as a registered nurse who has attained advanced knowledge and skills through an organized program of study. The three categories of study include nurse practitioner, certified nurse mid-wife, or clinical nurse specialist. National certification is not required for nurse practitioners completing an accredited graduate program. However, if the continuing education is part of a certificate program then a national certification is required. Although certification is not required in Indiana, Riley Hospital for Children nurse practitioners are required to certify within one year of employment.
I was allowed to observe the nurses, see what they were charting on. Different nurses let me do different things, some nurses would give me symptoms and ask what I thought the next step should be. Some nurses let me take vital signs and help them assess a resident. I shadowed four different registered nurses and the Director of Nursing. One of the days I was there I helped an RN review psychology consults.
Not all heroes wear capes, they wear scrubs too. The career I plan to pursue is a nurse practitioner. A nurse practitioner diagnoses and treats illnesses, independently or as part of a healthcare team, such as hospital. Their focus is disease prevention towards their patients and everyone. Nurse practitioners may order, perform, or interpret diagnostic tests such as lab work and X-rays, they may also prescribe medication.
Refection –on-Action and Clinical Learning: Describe three ways your nursing skill expanded during this experience. I believe my nursing skills expends every time I go to clinical, every time I have new patients, and every time I have new task to do. I get more experience during each clinical. I get more used to clinical system, and I to know the patient and how to assesse them. Name three things you would do differently if you encounter this kind of situation again.
The family member that this learner was able to connect with is John. John is very close with Megan and he was able to shed some light upon Megan’s problem. This learner connects with John because when this learner was younger, my family had foster children. Foster children was a great experience in my life. There were many children that had some serious problems.
The nurse thanked me for my help and as I was drawing up the saline Katie’s mother smiled at me and told me I would never forget this experience. She and her husband were both very thankful to the staff as they were leaving the hospital when Katie was being transferred. In that moment I felt a part of the team and I was happy that the nurse let me get involved with something that I was competent with and capable of completing successfully under supervision. I think looking back I should have taken initiative and gone to my preceptor before entering the room, so she could have informed and prepared me for what I was about to see. Although the nurses were very helpful once Katie was transferred.
My patient is an 89 year old male; the patient will be referenced as WP. WP was admitted to Lutheran 3 East for a primary diagnosis of pneumonia. His health history consists of COPD, acute respiratory failure, chronic kidney disease, coronary artery disease, vascular dementia without behavioral disturbance, CAD, carotid artery disease, and hyperlipidemia. My client also has a permanent cardiac pacemaker and use hearing aids. He’s allergic to oxycodone and Vicodin.
My clinical assignment for my spring semester of junior year is at Misericordia University. At Misericordia University I do not technically have an assigned sport in which I will be working with for the entire semester. I am looking forward to this upcoming semester because I feel like it is going to be different than at King’s College. This semester I will be able to work with a wide variety of sports teams and athletes, compared to only being assigned to one specific team, as I was last semester with the men’s soccer team.
What would you think if you walked into a hospital filled with people, but the people weren't really people, they are manikins that simulate patients. I know what you're thinking, Pretty Little Liars scenario, but this isn't a horror story. All across the country using health simulators to train MED students and even sharpen the skills of surgeons, is becoming more commonplace. What is a health simulator? What do they do?
Physical Therapist Physical Therapy was first established at Walter Reed Army Hospital in Washington D.C. on May 1st, 1909 to help war veterans overcome physical disabilities ( “About Us” 1). Because of Walter Reed you can now find Physical Therapy departments at most major hospitals around the nation and stand alone centers in many cities and towns. These facilities are run and operated by Physical Therapists, PT for short, which are trained professionals that help people recover from surgeries or injuries by retraining and strengthening muscles seeking to reduce recovery time and reduce pain associated with injuries. The changes in physical therapy have been modernized with the way society has built itself around active lifestyles.
I am looking for a ride to clinical each week. I know our 1st day is Friday from 1-7 and then we will be on our Monday morning schedules. Is there an opportunity that I can ride with you to and from clinical? I am happy to give you cash for gas money, just let me know how much.
Providing education to the family and patient about what to expect will relieve the stress of the unknown. It is necessary to readdress taught information as reinforcement will provide an increase in confidence. In addition to providing emotional support, it will be important to help the family organize the patient’s environment. Setting up a hospital bed up in an area that is free of clutter, with room for family members to deliver care. Teaching patients how to change linens on the patient 's bed when the patient is unable to
