An article in “The Week” magazine states that in a recent study about 95% of NFL players that have died due to illness were in fact victims of the football related degenerative disease called chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) (“Should Kids Play Football?” 3). CTE is a found in people who receive repetitive blows to the head, and results in memory loss, social instability, erratic behavior, and unfortunately death. CTE is the most commonly found in retired football players more than any other sport. Not to mention, CTE can affect people of all ages, so it is important to be mindful of the acts you let your child participate in. Including CTE many other diseases have been found to stem from playing football.
This is why people need to have the proper gear. "By the time they get to high school, kids have a 5% chance of sustaining a concussion for each season they play" (Zimmerman). If they choose to keep playing football then they will eventually end up with a brain concussion or brain damage. Over the years 65-80% of head injuries go unnoticed ("Stopping the..."58). Football player ignore the fact that it is just a headache.

These injuries would scare any parents and would deter them from allowing their sons to play football. Over the years, more parents have become stricter on the decision to allow their children to play football. Based on a survey in 2016, only 75% of parents would allow their children to participate in the sport. This number in 2013 was 87%. The number of parents that would allow their children to play decreased because of the of the recent news of the negative health issues associated with playing football.
There are over 1.3 million athletes throughout the nation that participate in high school football, but less than 10% of those 1.3 million players even get a concussion throughout their high school career (Weber). The main problems that cause high school football injuries is from the improper teaching of technique on how to tackle, block, and even run the ball correctly (Weber). Even though It can cause injuries, kids should be allowed to play football because when the sport is taught correctly, it’s less likely to get injured and it teaches significant life lessons like teamwork, cooperation, etc. Concussions and injuries in football haven’t been a huge deal until recently, when multiple NFL (National Football League) players sued the association
She joined a youth football league, when her stepfather asked her if she wanted to play football, as a joke. At first, when Rachel started playing, she was so nervous that her stomach hurt. But she got better and better, and eventually was able to join the football team in her school in seventh grade. For Rachel, being the only girl on the team was difficult. She was worried that her teammates wouldn’t accept her as
A thirteen-year-old girl’s worries typically consist of having to decide on what movie to see or keeping up with the latest trend, certainly not worrying about the health of her little brother. I had never imagined that my life could change while watching a simple game of youth football. Watching my brother’s football games on Saturday were pretty routine. In this particular game, Randy, playing as running back, took more hard hits than usual. Then, an opponent twice his size body slammed him into the ground.
In a case involving a 17-year-old who played football too soon after suffering a concussion and is now confined to a wheelchair. This was so serious because this teen suffered from second impact syndrome. It is often fatal and happens when a second head injury without recovering fully from the first. This boy got his injury when there was a helmet-to-helmet collision during a punt return. He had symptoms right away, but stayed in the game.
Concussions are always going to be a huge deal due to the fact on what they lead to, which is CTE (chronic traumatic encephalopathy). In “Seau 's Suicide Helped To Make Concussions In Football A National Issue” David Greene provides a statistics on Junior Seau and what doctors found in his brain after he died: “And there was CTE - chronic brain damage caused by repeated blows to the head” (Greene). CTE is a disease that peopl obtain from multiple head traumas and Junior Seau played in the NFL for a long 20 seasons, ended up having CTE and doctors believe this lead to his suicide. In “Headbanger Nation” Jeffrey Kluger provides some very tragic information on college football player at penn state: ¨Owen Thomas committed suicide in april of 2010 and got examined by Boston College and he had chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) which is seen mostly in NFL players who have had many concussions Owen never had a concussion”(Kluger). Owen played years of football and never recorded a concussion but this goes to show they do not need to have a concussion to receive this disease people can get it from the thousands of blows they take while playing the sport.
The topic sentence was unrelated to me because it talked about Maurice Jones-Drew who recently retired from football at age 29 (Gallagher). He had been playing football since he was 5 years old, that is way too young because according to the article 5 year olds with a weight class of 35 to 79 pounds play against older kids with much more weight, I can see how that leads to CTE. It also talks about how America prides itself on toughness that too me is the problem maybe we should start teaching boys to be a little more of what society calls “feminine” and we should stop perpetuating gender roles on small children. It then talked about Debra Pyka a woman whose son committed suicide at the age of 25 (Gallagher) because of CTE. My thing is that if they saw the signs of CTE why didn’t she try to get help for her son.
Therefore, he didn’t get kicked out of the league because he wasn’t good enough, but for sitting down during the national anthem. In today’s modern NFL, many players take a knee during the national anthem. My question is why didn’t they get kicked out of the league like Collin Kapernick? Our president, Donald Trump states that, “NFL owners should fire players who
Tony Nathan grew up in Alabama where he loved to play sports. When he was in high school he tried to quit the football time. However, Tony’s mother Louise Nathan did not let him and took him straight to the head coach and asked for Tony’s spot back. He was accepted back where he played at safety. But one game changed that; he went from hardly playing to in on every offensive snap.
