Summary: John Wooden’s Pyramid of Success has fifteen different parts to the pyramid. In this article it is broken down into four different sections. These sections are Prep, Care, Help and Ultimate Goal. Each one of these steps build up to get to the teams ultimate goal which is healing relationship, which is stronger than medicine.
How I plan to use it: I will use John Wooden’s Pyramid of success a lot in my paper because of the credibility that John Wooden has. His pyramid can be related to Bruce Bochy style of coaching that he uses. Bochy has been known for his great communication and that is what John Wooden put a lot of emphasis was communication and the relationship he had with his player which was shown with all of the NCAA titles that he won.

Following a legion--The New Coach by Ned Linch “Tell us how you did it coach.” These words were forced into my face with a camera lens almost resting against my cheeks (page 395). The team did it along with some guidance from my assistant coach and the parents. I want to thank my assistant coach who is the baseball expert. He used to play in the minor leagues and the team loved him because of his dedication to their lives and his credibility at baseball.

Wooden discusses how his father had a tremendous impact on him as both a coach and a man. After graduating from elementary school, Wooden’s father, Joshua Hugh Wooden, gave him a note that he would keep in his wallet until the day he died. The note included seven ways to live a happy and productive life, and Wooden spent his entire life trying to follow these rules to the best of his ability.
They become a father, mentor, trainer, teacher etc. Coaches take on more roles. I have witnessed the methods of John Wooden from a previous coach. These methods build a lot of team work and make the athletes play harder. John Wooden was a great example of how well planned out a great coach could be.

This has encouraged many coaches to follow his lead as a coach and attempt to achieve something even greater than what he has accomplished. After the Miami Marlins fired Ozzie Guillen, MLB has just four non-white managers in its ranks. While there is a higher percentage of white players in MLB and certainly fewer black players in baseball than the NFL the number of Hispanic and Latino players would lead one to believe that MLB teams would find cultural diversity an asset in a manager. As the game gets more global, that diversity has yet to fully resonate within the managerial ranks. The mission statement on the Minor League “To promote the game of baseball while providing affordable, fun, family-entertainment to all members of the diverse communities we serve. We achieve this by fostering an inclusive environment that provides ownership, investment, management, employment, business-to-business and fan participation opportunities that are enhanced and supported by grass roots initiatives focused on education, citizenship and leadership among our youth”.

Leadership Thought Prior to 1900 The earliest study of leadership thought would be the “Great Man Theory. This theory conceptualized leaders as a single “Great Man” who knew everything and influenced others to follow him. In leadership discourse, the Great Man theory—an assertion that certain individuals, certain men, are gifts from God placed on earth to provide the lightening needed to uplift human existence—is associated mainly with Thomas Carlyle (Spector, 2015, p.250). The focal-point of this theory is that leaders’ skills are inherent and set that them apart from those around them and that these traits enable them to assume roles of power and authority.
Transactional Leadership Frequently referred to as a managerial approach to leadership, the transactional leadership style is centered on improving efficiencies within an organization or team (McShane & Von Glinow, 2015). Leaders practicing the transactional approach focus on the details of the step by step processes and workflows using a reward and punishment system to encourage workgroup production (Dartey-Baah, 2015). As errors and inconsistent results are part of the expected norm, transactional leaders succumb to the belief that employees require ongoing monitoring and supervision to ensure compliance with the expected work practices. When used with an experienced high performing staff, the constant supervision and punitive nature of the transactional leadership style can be counterproductive, causing a decrease in production and satisfaction among some groups. In contrast, when used with newly formed production units, the transactional style has been known to improve employee engagement and response (Breevaart et al., 2014).
When kids get coached at a young age they can learn alot from the coach and even follow some characteristics the coach has. According to Coach Dennis, my former coach, “The friendships you make in watching your players become a better person on and off the field”. Coaches can become life-long mentors as you get through school and even what you do in life.
Sports leaders have position power over all players. However, the role of a sports leader is much more encompassing than being a good judge of a player’s ability. This implies that a leader should treat each player with the respect he/she deserves. Moreover, different leadership techniques apply to different players. As is the case with workers of varying strengths and weaknesses, sports leaders also need to flex their leadership style and practice the teachings of situational leadership.
