4.2 Sustainable Value Chain, Competitive Advantage and CSR
The value creation of a company is obtained not merely through the internal value chain but through the structure of a winning strategy that leads to the company’s competitive advantage that stands out among all other companies within the same industry (Porter, M. 1985). Therefore, the engine that drives every company’s competitive advantage through success, profit, and leadership is to understand the importance of creating sustainable value chain internally through the company’s operations, and externally through its corporate social responsibility towards the stakeholders.

In addition to being accused of slavery, child labor, use of pesticides and generating plastic bottles that lead to high waste production. The Coca Cola Company has been a target for many non- governmental organizations, governmental organizations, environmentalists and individuals. Obesity, diabetes, heart problems, excessive use of water for production, waste and toxin production, and many more issues were and are still associated with the brand name Coca Cola. In Britain, healthcare activists, nutritionists, and public health officers fired back at the Coca Cola Company for its new program plan to “fund a £20 million anti-obesity fitness drive in 70 of the country’s parks” (Donnelly, L. May, 25, 2014). While Coca Cola is defending the program as a way to bring free sessions of fitness and health activities to everyone especially families and young adults, critics attacked the program and the company for distracting the public opinion away from the health issues caused by the Coca Cola Company and its products (Donnelly, L. May, 25, 2014). Activists, doctors and public health officers are sending a message that it is not enough to promote the practicing of some sort of activity in order to maintain a healthy lifestyle as Coca Cola and many other food and …show more content…
The after effects of such limitations could lead to a slow economical development and the weakening of business productivity and thus affecting the job market, employment rates, gross domestic product (GDP), taxation, innovation and even competitiveness. “... Obesity is an issue that needs to be addressed. It is one that needs to be addressed with education, compassion, and support, not government mandates” (Stone, para 2). Prior to the middle of 2013, New York city mayor Michael Bloomberg had implemented a law that banned soda containers over the size of 16 ounces to be sold, but the ban was later repealed by the New York State Court. Essentially, the main controversy was whether the ban should have been repealed or ever created. According to Stone, by limiting people from doing something as simple as drinking certain amounts of soda, the city was going through the wrong course towards their objective.
Asthma, diabetes, heart disease, joint problems, depression, and even death are all effects of a deadly epidemic that is surging through the adolescents of America (Johnson). This epidemic is known as obesity. It has become the second leading cause of death in America, simply because it can lead to so many other health problems (Johnson). This devastating epidemic needs to be taken seriously. This can be done by examining the problem itself, the causes and effects of obesity, and figuring out some at-home and overall solutions.
When one looks at what the social aspect of culture entails, they will find that it contains a wide range of subjects. One of these subjects that was influenced by Coca-Cola was the U.S. soldiers during World War II and the post-war era. During this time, U.S. soldiers found Coca-Cola to be the “most important icon of the American way of life”. To them, it resembled a sacred time, and reminded them of their homes. During the post-war

The social costs of producing a can of coke in terms of resources, pollution, etc. are extensive. The amount of water that is needed to create a single liter of Coca-Cola is vastly different. For every nine liters of fresh water, only one liter of Coca-Cola is created. The pollution created by the Coke plants is also costly. Pollution arises due to impurities sin the air and water from shipments and factories themselves.

It seems to make an effort in portraying the product as something that should be shared with family and friends because of its consistent and great taste expected to bring joy to whoever drinks it. However many tests throughout the years have suggested how unhealthy he soft drink is for people, with the massive amounts of chemicals and sugar. Shockingly Coke has even been used as a cleaning product for homes and cars. The question here is whether the public should actually be sharing this product with their families and friends for fear of what it is doing to their health. Although the brand prides itself on having an unchanged logo and product it will have to concentrate more on the other products that have been released by the brand such as DietCoke and CokeZero.
TRADER JOE’S – INDUVIDUAL ASSIGNMENT 1 Part 1 – Introduction What Joe Coulombe did was opening an ordinary supermarket into the industry but the strategies he took were separating the Trader Joe’s from its rivals. What he did was to offer products targeting sophisticated costumers who were searching for good bargains. The offerings of Trader Joe’s were so unique which are not found at rival shelfs. Another crucial decision he made was to take advantage of recent environmental movements such as the rising trend of costumers searching organic foods. The company also decided on selling private labelled products with lower prices than other brands of the same product.
Cannibalising standard variants: Rising awareness of soft drinks-related health issues, in particular sugar levels, has sparked a trend for “better for you” beverages globally. As for Coca-colas’ carbonates, some countries saw standard cola are being cannibalised by low calorie colas and this represents a challenge. Coca-cola must continue to sustain growth in standard cola and expand low calorie
Market structures describe the competitive environment in which a firm operates. The characteristics of the market structure will have a major-influence on the competitive strategies and tactics that are implemented by firms. (Octotutor, 2014). For the purpose of this analysis, I have chosen to analyze the Coco-Cola Company, which operates in an oligopoly. This type of market has many implications for both consumers and competing firms.
The adoption of CSR strategy is also another drive factor for companies as it is perceived a way to gain competitive advantage. Those two aspects are strongly connected and the role of the supply chain in CSR strategies is vital (Blowfield & Murray, 2010). Companies which have not only adopted CSR actions but have highlightened them as a core factor of their long-term strategic planning may find complexities to uphold their social and enviromental standards to the whole value chain. The key issues that must be solved in the supply chains to support the firm’s CSR strategy are: • The partnership companies have with their suppliers: Companies, likeTesco, must collaborate more closely with their tier suppliers without underestimating the controlling them to esnure that sustainable ethics and actions are applied. • Particularly, for the transportation/distribution sector, the reduction of fuel emissions can be achieved by achieving a successful perfomance of lean supply chains, with organized distribution plans which will minimize the
