CHAPTER ONE INTRODUCTION 1.1 BACKGROUND TO THE STUDY In Ghana, cocoa beans have been the main export commodity since 1957. Currently, Ghana is considered as the second world’s largest producer of cocoa after Cote d’Ivoire. The cocoa sector plays an important role in the Ghanaian economy through employment of labour and revenue generation. Even though Ghana COCOBOD handles international marketing of cocoa beans, various reforms in the cocoa sector have made it possible for companies that have been licensed by COCOBOD to handle the internal marketing of cocoa beans since 1992/1993 cocoa season. 1.2 PROBLEM STATEMENT Adwumapa Buyers Limited is one of the Ghana COCOBOD Licensed buying companies which have been in operation since the liberalization of internal marking of cocoa beans in Ghana. Adwumapa Buyers Limited has a staff capacity exceeding 6,600. As part of its social responsibilities, it embarks on road construction as well as sending education to the doorsteps of some cocoa communities through the construction of school blocks and provision of stationery to the children of the cocoa farmers.
