INTRODUCTION

1.1 BACKGROUND TO THE STUDY
In Ghana, cocoa beans have been the main export commodity since 1957. Currently, Ghana is considered as the second world’s largest producer of cocoa after Cote d’Ivoire. The cocoa sector plays an important role in the Ghanaian economy through employment of labour and revenue generation.

Even though Ghana COCOBOD handles international marketing of cocoa beans, various reforms in the cocoa sector have made it possible for companies that have been licensed by COCOBOD to handle the internal marketing of cocoa beans since 1992/1993 cocoa season. Currently, about 38 companies have been licensed by the COCOBOD as agents in the internal marketing of cocoa for the country. Among these Licensed

1.2 PROBLEM STATEMENT
Adwumapa Buyers Limited is one of the Ghana COCOBOD Licensed buying companies which have been in operation since the liberalization of internal marking of cocoa beans in Ghana. Adwumapa Buyers Limited has a staff capacity exceeding 6,600. As part of its social responsibilities, it embarks on road construction as well as sending education to the doorsteps of some cocoa communities through the construction of school blocks and provision of stationery to the children of the cocoa farmers. This shows that aside their social responsibility that enhances communal growth of cocoa communities they operate with, the company also soaks up a proportion of the labour force. Any activities that lead to the collapse of Adwumapa Buyers Limited will not just cause COCOBOD from losing in the value of its stock but it will also cause workers of Adwumapa Buyers to lose their source of livelihood and increase the unemployed labour in the

1.5 RELEVANCE OF THE STUDY
On the whole, the study would have serious policy implications for Ghana COCOBOD and hence would form as an important source of reference to enable policy makers to understand and make decisions thereof concerning the factors that affect the purchases of cocoa in Ghana. This is very important since cocoa forms one of the country’s major exported commodities which tend to affect out exchange rate as well.

Specifically, the findings of this study will aid Adwumapa Buyers Limited to induce the performance of their purchasing clerks in order for the company to grow through increasing bags of cocoa beans delivered to Ghana COCOBOD.
