Research Objectives This research aims to understand the smallholder cocoa farmers’ livelihood and determine the factors influencing decision making in livelihood activities (diversification) and in production of cocoa. The objectives of this study are to: 1. Identify the elements and associated factors that constitute the livelihood system of the study areas and its accessibility to the farmers, 2. Examine livelihood activities in the study areas, 3. Determine the factors influencing the farmers’ decision of engagement in various livelihood activities and establish factors affecting smallholder cocoa production, and 4. What are the major factors affecting cocoa production in the study areas? This research seeks to understand the farmers’ environment and their way of live and delve into farmers’ determination in cocoa production. Therefore, this study explores the farmers’ livelihood and its diversification to understand the scope of cocoa production based on farmers’ perspective. Is low cocoa production an issue to the farmers as seen by researcher, extension agents, government and other stakeholders? Moreover, why farmers respond to the way they do (and do not do) in their given environments (community settings) towards cocoa production and other livelihood activities? The outcome of this research will provide us with a better understanding of farmers’ livelihood, factors affecting them, their perceptions and attitudes, why farmers make certain decisions, and how farmers interpret their circumstances to enable effective change in their livelihoods and cocoa production systems. Having such understanding may then provide some directions to researchers and extension agents and agencies in the appropriate way to approach farmers by taking into account farmers’ livelihood as well as technical inputs in cocoa production in PNG. 1.7 Thesis…show more content…
Chapter 6 presents the framework of this study that conceptualises the concept of sustainable livelihood in relation to the problems and objectives of the research that are highlighted in the first chapter. Chapter 7 provides the research design and methodology of this study. It provides a description of study sites, methodological approach, and survey methods and data organisation. Chapter 8, 9, and 10 presents the research findings categorised into three (3) main topics accordingly; the human settings of the study areas; the assets and livelihood strategies; and modus operandi of cocoa research, development and extension in PNG. Chapter 11 is the discussion chapter that explains the context of these key findings (chapter 8, 9, 10) and established key factors that affect the farmers’ livelihood and cocoa production and its relevance and implications in relation to literature and the theoretical insights of this study. Finally, Chapter 12 concludes this thesis by presenting a summary of the key findings from this study, as well as implications and suggestions for the future direction of
