The media will begin to challenge these college coaches on the power that they have over their athletes. Coaches will be a little more cautious on how they get in there athlete’s face and what type of language is being used. Future coaches will understand their freedom may be as much at stake as their reputation and salary if they choose to go the abusive route. Especially if they are being filmed in practice. An article in the CBS DC sports feed states, “Coaches should walk on eggshells to maximize their players’ potential, but rather, the days of unchecked authority have come to an end. Coaches must now allow reason and common sense to underline each of their decisions” (Lingeback, 2013). Athletes will be aware of their coaches behavior on what is accepted and what is not ethical during practices and games. A code of ethics for each sports program should be the welfare and protection of every person they come in contact with in their program. It is our responsibility as a coach to aspire to the highest standards possible to respect, protect human and civil rights, and do not condone unfair discriminatory practices. We need to be accountable for everything that takes place within our program. As Maxwell (2003) states, “It’s ironic. We don’t like to be reminded of our shortcomings, and we don’t like our shortcomings exposed to others either. But if we want to grow, we need to face the pain of a person’s life, and accountability is the cornerstone” (p.50). Therefore, if a team is going to grow and mature, the need of coach - player and player – player accountability is
Kelli Kuchefski Professor Buttrick Business Ethics 4/23/18 NCAA Bribery Scandal I. Introduction Today’s society is full of ethical dilemmas that question whether people are acting morally or immorally correct. How is it that we, as a society, are not able to determine whether our actions are right or wrong? Is it that we, as humans, feel we are exempt from following the rules? One area of focus that is getting a lot of press lately, where morals and ethics are in question, is the world of college sports and athletics. II.
As a coach, abuse can get you into a lot of trouble, and it is proven that kids are being abused during practices. For instance, 45.3 of kids said they have been called names, yelled at, or insulted by coaches. Athletes are going to get yelled at from time to time, but never as a coach call your student athlete a name or insult them (Aleshire, 2003). Making sure that the students are safe is another part to abuse. If a student has an injury do not force them to play through it!
In today 's news, two Texas high school football athletes made headlines following the ambush of an official during a pivotal moment of the game. Allegedly, the official provoked the two by using racial slurs and attempted to give the opponents the advantage due to his dislike for the opposing team. The two high school players who were involved, were reportedly ordered by their assistant coach to take action after the coach had he felt he and the team were being discriminated against. According to CNN, the coach recently resigned (McLaughlin, Elliot).
High school coaches should not be required to give equal playing time to all players who make the team. Kids in society have been handed things their entire life. There has been little to no sense of accomplishment after earning a spot or position on a team. Spots should be earned by being the best at what someone does, not for pitty and for moral victories to make them feel good. “In high school, kids should understand playing time is earned.

Dohrmann & Evans (2013) acknowledge Weston (2011) with the ongoing violations at Oklahoma State University involving violations that date back as far as 2000. Sturgis (2011) also provides further evidence by discussing the masses of undocumented bylaw 10 violations by Boise State. The NCAA clearly has a problem with unethical conduct and bylaw 10. Why the NCAA may argue and assess the blame of bylaw 10 violations towards student athletes and institutions, there are still concerns that the NCAA is conducting acts of unethical conduct that go beyond the
Also, he shows that it is okay to admit student athletes because they learn to be discipline, respect, and leadership based on being on a team environment. He does have a fallacy of a False Analogy because he states that the author of the first essay knows nothing about football because he attendee home games and the author of the second essay would play and he was in this environment while in school. He thinks because student athletes put a lot of their time in to school and football that they should be getting a stipend with their scholarship because they put more hours into college work with all of their training and practicing and with their studies. He also, does not contradict
Inter-collegiate sports began in the US in 1852 when crews from Harvard University and Yale University met in a challenge race in the sport of rowing. As rowing remained the preeminent sport in the country into the late-1800s, many of the initial debates about collegiate athletic eligibility and purpose were settled through organizations like the Rowing Association of American Colleges and the Intercollegiate Rowing Association. As other sports emerged, notably football and basketball, many of these same concepts and standards were adopted. Football, in particular, began to emerge as a marquee sport, but the rules of the game itself were in constant flux and often had to be adapted for each contest.
Without sportsmanship, teams are not very fun to watch and aren’t respected by other teams. This coach is also putting emphasis on proper ethics of his athletes. By stressing the importance of
