The ACM, also known as the Association for Computing Machinery, is an organization built to join computing educators, professionals, and researchers in tackling common problems in the field. Created in 1947, the Association was born out of an increased interest in computing, that began after rudimentary enigma machines were used by the Allies in WW2, and meetings at top tier universities demonstrated the capabilities of computers. The purpose of the organization, stated in 1945, was to "advance the science, development, construction, and application of the new machinery for computing, reasoning, and other handling of information.” Of course, as with any creation of a professional society, there is a code of ethics created along with it, fine-tuned …show more content…

The first is point 1.4, which is “be fair and take action not to discriminate”, and the second is 2.6, “accept only those responsibilities for which you have or can obtain the necessary expertise, and honor those commitments”. Sub point 1.4 has a short line that could be easily read over, but I feel may be the most important line of the code. It reads, “Technologies should be as inclusive and accessible as possible”. This line is why I feel that advancing technology is the most important thing I can do with my life. At the root, the point of technology is to make life better. It makes communication easier, it makes decision making easier, it aids in the everyday activities of humans. The other sub point, 2.6, is more relevant to me personally, rather than an overarching opinion I have on society. I have always felt pushed to do more, work harder, achieve higher, and for the most part I do a good job at …show more content…

This code is written in such as a way that it looks at the world through the individual. The general moral principles include preventing “any potential harm to the local or global environment”, but only instruct individuals on how to conduct themselves. There is no need to be loyal to a “middle man”, or a company. If the code was to focus on creating loyalty to companies, it would be redundant and inefficient. There would need to be code written for companies, regarding how they should ensure their employees conduct themselves. At that point, it’s back down to the individual person. Impact does not happen at the level of a company, ethically speaking. It must come from within the employee. The code does advocate for leaders within a company to create a positive work environment, which we can infer will create a company that employees feel loyal to, but the code does not refer to loyalty to the company specifically or directly. Humans, on an individual basis, are what drive all operations in life, regardless of where their loyalty lies, if anywhere at
