A substantial number of Pakistanis study at public sector universities where students from varied background gain admission. Code switching from English to Urdu is common among educated Pakistani bilinguals (Anwar, 2007).Code switching (henceforth referred to as CS) and code mixingare actually two different kinds of codes. The former refers to the shift from one language to another in the same discourse and the latter refers to the mixing of two or more languages in the same discourse (Jalal, 2010). Such coding system is a norm and “a natural consequence” in bilingual societies (Chan, 2007). But, with the globalization of English it seems to connote with switching to English from L1. As far as the use of CS in Target Language (TL) classes is concerned, it refers to a language shift at the time of need (Jingxia, 2010). Thus, in the context of English language teaching, CS refers to teaching English with the help of L1 (Chowdhry, …show more content…
It is a university offering 55 disciplines. Therefore, there is the enrollment of diverse groups of learners having different backgrounds. One of the aspects of diversity is in terms of linguistic competence in English. It has generally been observed that teaching English-through-English seems less effective in English language classes where majority of the students possess limited proficiency in English. Thus, CS is taken as a teaching aid and it is a commonplace practice in English Language Classes.
There is a substantial research gap in the present context of the study, therefore it is hard to establish the reasons behind CS by English language teachers. The current study, therefore, attempts to explore the reasons of teacher CS in English language classes, aiming to fulfill the gap in the existing body of literature in the context of Pakistan.

In his essay “The World of Doublespeak,” William Lutz define doublespeak as “a blanket term for language which makes the bad seem good, the negative appear positive, the unpleasant attractive, or at least tolerable” (2013). Lutz goes on to claim “It is language which avoids, shifts, or denies responsibility” (2013). He explains the purpose of doublespeak is to “mislead, distort, deceive, inflate” (2103). Based on many of his examples, such as wording an airplane as an airplane that has had “uncontrolled contact with the ground,” or referring to a city slum as the resident of the “fiscal underachievers,” I feel he may overstate his own definition of doublespeak. While, the play on words in these examples does attempt to deceive the read and

As an international student, I have experienced the challenges of Code-switching. In my experience, Code meshing was useful stuff for me to communicate more effectively with people in situations where English was not my first language. What's more Code meshing is a much more effective way to communicate than simply teaching students to write in standard English. In my opinion, educators must recognize and accept Code meshing as a valuable form of communication that can enrich language and writing. It allows people to

Even though code-switching is encouraged, there needs to be an equilibrium and therefore a target language will ensure a balance between the intended language and the language which the students prefer to speak. Moreover, there are certain aspects of code-switching which may hinder the education of students and that may lead to negative consequences (Moodley, 2013:75). If a teacher is monolingual, they will not be able to code-switch in a multilingual classroom. Children will not be able to understand certain concepts that are unfamiliar to them. The teacher will struggle to have their class in active learning; students will not be actively engaging with their coursework that is provided.
Code switching is a switch in the way you speak or the language you speak, Sometimes codes switching is formal or in formal speech. Code switching is something you do around your friends, family, school, and work. It is something very important because it helps with every conversation you may have at school, home or work. Schools make this a requirement to code switch because it helps to improve your communication with others, which is good for a future job interview and speaking with law enforcements. I feel like school made this a requirement for everybody because it helps to know when to speak properly and when you’re talking to friends.
The notion of bilingualism is frequently connected to the idea of code-switching since a person should have ability to speak using two or more than one variety. Researchers have made countless studies describing bilingualism as they create awareness in different ways. To begin with is Bloomfield (1933) who defined bilingualism as having the “native- like control of two languages”. However, Haugen (1953) pinpointed that bilingualism is the ability of a speaker to communicate and understand an additional variety. This is to mean that the concept of bilingualism exist only when an individual of a certain variety has the capability to communicate effectively in an additional variety.
Bilingualism is slowly becoming a popular “trend”. Those who are able to speak a second language at an advanced level and not only, are clearly considered by the society intellectually capable of great things. As a bilingual, the individual must not only know the grammar rules or achieve a high level in communication. He also has to study the cultural background of that specific language. Knowing a second language has a major impact on one’s life.
