In the Code Talkers, Ned learns American ways and goes to serve in World War Two by being a Code Talker. In the novel, it shows the ability to find strength and courage through one's culture. The four examples I choose was Ned not wanting to forget his language, doing the Blessingsway ceremony, working hard/not giving up, and learning self-confidence as a marine. When Ned was in boarding school the teachers would punish Navajo children if the spoke Navajo. For some, the punishment was bad enough that it was hard to speak Navajo, but for Ned, it made him not want to forget it. An example is, "If anything, rather than taking my language away from me, made me more determined never to forget it" (pg. 26-27). This connects to my theme by when he said he felt more determined that meant he had strength and courage to never forget his language. Before Ned went to boot camp, he had a ceremony done for him called the Blessingway which gives him strength and safety. My example for this is, "You know what it's like to feel the beauty of the sunrise touching and giving you strength as the corn pollen is sprinkled on the earth into crosses where you kneel" (pg. 54). This example connects to my theme because the Blessingway is a ceremony that has to do with Navajo culture. It gives Ned strength and …show more content…
The first example is, "Through all the years that we kept our secret about having been code talkers, I worked hard for our people as a teacher and a member of our community" (pg.212). This example shows that Ned had the courage to work hard for his community which was his culture. The second example is, "However, I never gave up. I just became more determined. I took part in tribal government, working for education reform on our reservation." Which shows that he had the strength and courage to keep trying to help accomplish more in his
Ralph Waldo Emerson once said, “Envy is ignorance; imitation is suicide” (370). If this is the case, then how does it apply to John Knowles’ A Separate Peace, set in 1940’s New Hampshire? In the novel, Gene Forrester’s envy and imitation of Phineas lead him to sacrifice his individuality. In A Separate Peace Gene Forrester returns to his time at Devon to examine how his envy and imitation cause him to make courageous and impulsive decisions, to establish his and Finny’s role in their friendship, and to reflect on his achievement of peace. Gene’s spite and imitation affect him on both a mental and emotional level.
Another example is from The Great Gatsby. It is that Gatsby worked so hard to win Daisy. He did this by throwing huge parties to gain her attention. Once he got her attention, he stopped throwing the parties because he got exactly what he
He showed his sense of self when he became his own person with spirits, shrewdness, and imagination. (xviii) His transformation was proven in his journey of risk taking, danger, family, and friendships that can be told the next generation as well
Many say Courageousness is standing up for something you know is wrong, speaking up when no one wants to listen, taking action in something that many others consider unwanted, I believe that courage is a combination of all of these.n the novel of Roll Of Thunder Hear my cry, Mildred D Taylor created a character named Stacey who will do anything in order to protect those around him (especially family) Stacey was courageous because he went to places that were against the rules or somewhere that not many kids his age should go to, Stacey destroyed the bus by digging a ditch, and took initiative a few times. Stacey deals with problems in a courages way by standing his ground and not taking no as a rebuttal or an answer while taking action. Stacey will do everything in his power as a black boy in order to provide for his family and will help his family (specifically cassie) when they start to realize that the world is unfair. Have you ever gone somewhere that you shouldn 't have or that common sense says is a bad idea, because Stacey did exactly that. Stacey has gone to many places that he shouldn 't have or that he knew would be dangerous.
He showed the true characteristics of a leader and a hero doing so by believing in equality and his men's determination to fight for their
Code Talker by Joseph Bruchac is about Ned Begay, a Navajo code talker during World War II. Ned faced two life changing events that shapes who he is. First is his move to an American boarding school that forces him to act like someone else, later he becomes a Navajo code talker with even more hardships to face. During these pivotal events, Ned experiences similar situations that I have been through. Ned was living peacefully on the Indian reservations until he has to go American boarding school hundred miles away.
Courage doesn 't just help you it can also help other people around you too. Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry, Mildred D. Taylor uses Cassie Logan as an example of courage, although she has faced many rough and harsh times she has used courage to overcome them. Cassie faces many challenges but some of the ones that stood out to me were, standing up to the teacher when Little Man did not want his book because of the condition that it was in, standing up for herself at the Mercantile when she was not waited on, and T.J when he was not being so nice to Cassie and the Loganś. Cassie was a very smart and intelligent person. She always wanted to know what was going on because she wanted to know if there was something that she could do to help.
These qualities were what saved his life and helped preserve the memory of that terrible
When children are little, they are taught never to give up and persevere through tough times. But perseverance is one of the hardest life stills to learn. We can see this problem in main characters in many fiction novels. In Elie Wiesel’s Night and William Golding’s Lord of the Flies, the main characters of these pieces of literature want to pursue their hopes, but eventually the determination wanes. In Night, Elie was optimistic when he was first taken away by the Germans and believed he would eventually find the rest of his family, happy and healthy.
Assimilation is the process of adapting or adjusting to the culture of a group or nation, or the state of being. It also is the state or condition of being assimilated, or of being absorbed into something. An example of will be, assimilation of immigrants into American life. Assimilation connects a lot to the novel because Kii Yazhi has to adapt to the ways of Americans when he goes to boarding school and has to act like them. In the novel Code Talkers the author Bruchac perfectly shows and explains assimilation.
Self respect is one of the most foremost essential traits to acquire in life. “It is then that you can extend yourself out to meet the needs of others”(evagregory.com). In Joseph Bruchac’s Code Talker, Ned Begay’s self respect is perhaps his most important attribute in that it allows him to stand up for himself, to pursue his goals, and to share his story. Firstly, Ned Begay’s ability to stand up for himself is a crucial aspect of his self respect.
Another example of the theme from the book is “Sorry, Benny- I forgot. Point is, you got family of some kind, right?” This example shows that you will always have some type of family, even if you don’t know it. If you don’t have family, you will struggle in life.
