One issue that stands out to me is the high rate of homeless LGBT youth. This stands out to me because I see a high number of these youth come into CPS care due to their sexual orientation. I believe there is a way we can get the youth to remain in their parent’s home by providing them with the proper support. The first theory that would help this social issue is cognitive theory. Cognitive theory states that the problem originates in faulty cognitions or understanding that naturally lead to inappropriate or dysfunctional responses, behaviors, attitudes, or feelings on the part of individuals (Maguire, 2002). Symbolic Interactionism would be another theory approach that could be used for this issue. This theory focuses on how the “self” is
Austin Karisny Dr. Looper English 1101 04-07-17 Theme in “Homeless” Michael Crowley’s “Homeless” centers around him as a child living in Corbin, Kentucky. Corbin is a small town with a racist history to it’s name and not much else. The story focuses on the struggles of living in a community full of prejudice that targets anyone different. Crowley’s essay is about portraying bigotry in the appalachian mountains making it the theme: which is the purpose for writing a story to begin with.

There are more than 500,000 homeless people in America (Johnson). There are many reasons and causes for people to end up living this way, but the biggest cause is tragic life events, for like loss of loved ones, job loss, domestic violence, divorce, and family disputes. Other reasons for homelessness are depression, untreated mental illness, PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder), and physical disabilities ("Top Causes of Homelessness in America."). Many people see homelessness as a bad thing and an issue, but it does serve a purpose in society. Homelessness can be seen in many different ways.
The effects of school-based support on sexual minority youth are well documented, notably, a recent study by Dr. Carol Goodenow, a Director of School Health Programs, suggests that perceived staff support lowered suicidality in LGBT youth (588). This means that schools that had some staff support had lower student suicide rates than schools that did not have staff
People who are homeless encounter much ridicule in our society’s. The stigma homelessness carries have in some ways devastated the dignity of so many of whom have fallen victim. One might think that the homeless had been involved in some misdeeds that ended them up on the streets or assumed that laziness is the culprit and have resolved to panhandling. We attempt to justify our responses by rehearsing why our need is greater or suppose that whatever means given would not be used for purposes intended and so we talk ourselves into or out of meeting the needs of others.
The Opportunity Center houses male and female participants from the ages of 18 years and older. A pattern of mental health illness, lack of jobs, low income, and lack of education has been identified among the residents of the homeless shelter. Typically, women are more likely to leave the shelter sooner than man because of their motivation to succeed in life and likelihood to be more pro-active in assisting job fairs as well as health fairs offered by the shelter. Also, the lack of medical compliance is more evident among men than females, since most men denied a need for medication, or are in denial that they have been diagnosed with a mental illness.
While reflecting, California saw the discrimination and abuse which children were suffering from. Specifically, in cases where children are LGBTQ+. With the help of different charities around the area, children with different sexualities can feel safer inside the foster care system. The previously mentioned groups can do this by giving LGBTQ+ children safe spaces, resources, and different outlets to express themselves. In this way, the city of Los Angeles can promote a more accepting environment for those children who might feel different or out of
Essay on The Homeless Introduction to Human Resources Columbia college By Kawana Roberts The issue of contemporary homelessness has took a huge shift from the common perception of homeless people. I am witnessing a shift from the image of ‘homelessness’ being a physically dirty, pan handling, poor, uneducated individual who does not have a physical home for shelter. Initially, I failed to recognize that ‘homelessness’ can be a temporary state on can live in. Not all homeless people are homeless by “choice”, sometimes people are homeless by “force”.
It is disheartening when the homeless is being treated poorly by other people. Some people think of the homeless as someone who is inferior or dirty. But , in spite of the all those negative stereotypes you will be quite surprised by how some of the homeless have a positive outlook maybe because they go through a lot more in life, they learned how to live life and not just simply surviving it. There are about 3.5 million Americans who are homeless each year. Homelessness will always be present.
Walking down the streets of the city I am faced with the problem head on. It inspired me to propose and lead a school wide fundraiser to raise money for youth homelessness and donate the contributions to Larkin Street Youth Service — a local organization in San Francisco that provides shelter, drug abuse treatments, counseling, transitional living programs, food, clothes, medical care, and drug training to homeless youth. The money was raised through a raffle, as well as through a game of jeopardy where the answers where different gender identities, and sexual and romantic orientations. This game helped to engage and educate the students on the large variety of identities in the LGBTQ community and what each one means. I also wrote and distributed information about youth LGBTQ homelessness so people were more aware of the large problem many LGBTQ youth face.
Balancing out individuals through shelters, moving them into permanent lodging, and actualizing help projects to keep them in their housing, can lessen, as well as dispose of, homelessness. System theories compresses ideas that apply to all frameworks. System theory is helpful when drawing close to complex issues. The greater part of us utilize a frameworks approach for critical thinking. This paper discusses how the developmental theory works for the human administration professional when dealing homeless mentally ill.
Looking at society as a whole with individual units that work together to make society function efficiently is the structural functionalism concept. Each unit has a part and is describe as institutions such as family, religion, education, politics, economy and inequality. Because structural functionalism looks at social structure and patterns of behavior it is able to create values for society. As well as, distinguish between visible and suppressed problems within the social structures that may need to be addressed. For instance, homelessness is indication of dysfunction in structural functionalism system.
Homelessness and Functionalism The social problem that I chose was homelessness. Homelessness has increased by 8% since 2011-2012 to more than 225,000 people in 2014-15 and in 2011 censers 105,237 people where homeless. As also the unemployment rate and the domestic violence rate which both are increasing as well as these are some of the big factors . The biggest reason homelessness is domestic violence.
Area of Conflict Homelessness can be understood in the perspective of conflict theory, which holds that capitalism is one the main reason for homelessness. “Capitalism is a social system based on the recognition of individual rights, including property rights, in which all property is privately owned” (Ayn Rand). There are many reasons why a person becomes homeless, an increasing number become homeless each year, with up to 5,000 people becoming homeless every year. Generally the experiences that lead to homelessness are determined by poverty and structural inequality.
The self can be defined as ‘an organised, consistent set of perceptions of and beliefs about oneself’ (Passer, Smith, Holt, Bremner, Sutherland & Vliek, 2009, p676). We should aim to understand ourselves, learn know how we function
