The study was in fact an attempt to investigate the cohesive devices used in the English novel "the old man and the sea" and its Persian translation. As it was illuminated in the preceding section of the study, the findings of the study revealed that the cohesive tie of personal pronouns formed the highest portion of the cohesive devices used in the English version of the novel under study. Collocations and repetition scored the next. The cohesive tie of repetition was found to be the next highly used cohesive tie. All other cohesive devices were used with a percentage of less than 10%. The list of the used cohesive ties included synonym, temporal, adversative and causal conjunction. The three groups of ellipsis namely, nominal, verbal and clausal were used with a percentage of less than 10% as well. The cohesive device of substitution was also used in a low percentage. First when teachers are teaching their students how to use CDs, it is worth reminding that a proper dose of CDs makes writing better. Secondly, since the findings indicated that the participants preferred repeating words rather than using synonyms and antonyms to describe the main points of their topic, teachers should help students enlarge their choice of vocabulary. Teachers could engage the students in some vocabulary activities such as word association game before writing to elicit and build students' vocabulary. Thirdly, writing teachers could introduce corpora to students since corpora can enhance learners' awareness of lexico-grammatical patterning of texts (Yoon, 2008). Corpus-informed syllabi can be mixed with writing courses where in students learn to solve their lexical problems through concordances and collocation
When writing a novel authors must think not only about what they are about to write, but why they are going to write it. They have to select diction that will convey their inner thoughts and emotions. There is a need of imagery to pull the reader into the story so they will not lose their drive to read. Tone must constantly shift in order to keep the reader so engaged that they are determined to read until it all makes sense. From the longest to the shortest sentence, there is a reason -- called syntax-- why that sentence is there.
“Getting knocked down in life is a given. Getting up and moving forward is a choice.”(Zig Ziglar). In the novel, The Boys and the Boat, Joe Rantz, the main character, got knocked down in life more times than he could count, but he always got up and moved forward. At a young age, Joe Rantz’s mother passed away and his family abandoned him. He learned to fend and work to make money to provide for himself, making enough money to go to college, where he made the rowing team, despite the many challenges.
The boys efforts to imitate and to try and recreate the adult world but fall short and fail due to their developmental teamwork and cognitively. In Lord of the Flies by William Golding This sets them up as they are delayed by their emotional and mental setbacks. This results in them creating an unstable society that is failing to maintain and keeps itself above water as a comparison between the two things and ideas. Their society that they had set up had failed due to their lack of teamwork and collapsed onto itself. There is an analogy that fits this, an upside down pyramid, a symbol of unbalanced team work.
The Rime of the Ancient Mariner by Samuel Taylor Coleridge is a detailed poem that explains to the audience the, Mariner’s journey in a secluded manner. Once reading this poem and analyse Coleridge’s message you will understand that all choices have consequences for which you must be responsibly for. This poem connects with the allegory of crime, punishment, redemption because of the Mariner’s action caused everything. There are heroes among us that we don't see. These people show their bravery in acts of greatness whether they are saving people or other things of significant value to others. It is without a doubt that people like these are remembered for their acts of greatness and abiding service. Ways individuals like these are remembered are through people’s writing, or even monuments celebrating their acts of courage. Some heroes being commemorated through books are often written by people who were saved by that hero; furthermore, the individual saved must feel eternally grateful from the hero’s work.
Normally, writing an essay of this length ( 1000-1500 words), I would unconsciously go off topic resulting in a misleading essay. Therefore, Ha’s confirmation of my coherence is really satisfying. Nevertheless, as Ha mentioned in her analysis, my use of linking words is mechanically and repetitive. This may be cause by my inflexibility in words choice and lack of time to carefully examine my essay since I started working on the essay quite late. Finally, Ha addressed her comments regarding my lexicon-grammatical structure.
Every novel or stories gives a fundamental ideas or lesson for the readers. Most of the lesson are informative and it brings a changes to the readers mind. There will be a universal of an ideas explored in a literature and readers can abstract numerous themes depending on each individual. Similarly, in the novel “the old man and the sea” Hemingway depicted several themes related to nature, people and so on. However determination can also be one of the theme for the readers because the old man, Santiago didn’t gave up fishing even if he had cramp but he took this as an encouragement in his old age.
The novel, The Old Man and the Sea, is a story about an old man, Santiago, who experienced great adversity but did not give up. The author, Ernest Hemingway, describes how an old man uses his experience, his endurance and his hopefulness to catch a huge marlin, the biggest fish he has ever caught in his life. The old man experienced social-emotional, physical, and mental adversity. However, despite the overwhelming challenges, he did not allow them to hold him back but instead continued to pursue his goal of catching a fish with determination. Santiago’s character, his actions and the event in the novel reveals an underlying theme that even when one is facing incredible struggles, one should persevere.
One of the themes in the novel, The Old Man and the Sea, is that one should persevere even in the most challenging situations. The old man’s, Santiago’s, lone struggle with the fishes and the forces of nature over a period of almost three months demonstrated an almost mythical persistence. The purpose of this essay is to evaluate whether this theme has any value compared to God’s word. The Bible often discusses the theme of perseverance in the midst of adversity. Even though one views Santiago’s endurance and tenacity with admiration, the root causes of that perseverance is different from the reasons for a Christian’s perseverance in the world.

Many times in literature, characters have difficulties that they must overcome. In the Old Man and the Sea by Ernest Hemingway this had happened to the main character Santiago. Santiago is faced with the difficulty of hunting down the eighteen foot Marlin fish tormenting him physically in pain and mentally in regret. While in the Scarlet Ibis by James Hurst, Doodle one of the main characters, of the short story is also faced with a difficulty, which is his fitness. In the Old Man in the Sea Santiago shows his endurance of the difficulties he is faced with.
The widow, Miss Watson, takes Huck into a closet to pray, and tells him to pray every day so he will get what he wants. Huck tries to pray daily, but becomes disappointed when all he gets is a fish-line with no hooks, when he prayed extra hard for hooks. “By-and-by, one day, I asked Miss Watson to try for me, but she said I was a fool. She never told me why, and I couldn’t make it out no way” (19). When he asks Miss Watson about it, she tells him praying brings spiritual gifts.
CHAPTER III METHODOLOGY 3.1. Introduction Writing plays a vital role in people’s everyday communication. For university students, writing an English composition constitutes a difficult task, in which the use of cohesive devices is one of the major problems. The reason why researchers focus on the role of cohesion in writing so much is the fact that cohesion is assumed to contribute to the coherence of any piece of writing.
Hemingway presents the elements of failure and suffering in The Old Man and the Sea by depicting several instances of suffering and failure which the Old Man, Santiago, has to go through throughout the course of the novel. According to Hemingway, life is just one big struggle. In the beginning of the novel itself, The Old Man, is presented as a somewhat frail old man who is still struggling with his life as well as his past failures. His skiff even had a sail which bore great resemblance to “the flag of permanent defeat”, with its multiple patches all over.
