Harmonizing business courses with opportunities such as internships and studying abroad at the Smeal College is perhaps the most pivotal way in which I will explore my academic endeavors. The chance for me to major in Risk Management with a concentration in real estate and minor in international business is particularly enticing because I will have the opportunity to learn from situations where I will be forced to think on my feet; the leadership skills that I have learned thus far from National Honor Society and from my real estate internship will allow me to succeed in doing so. As an International Relations and Economics major, I am primarily interested in pursuing a career in the public policy world in Washington, DC. Working in the realm of politics and economics would be the most fulfilling place for me in the professional world. Public policy is how change is enacted. It is what our societies revolve around. In my opinion, this gives it a greater sense of importance and relevance than other career areas.
After two years of working as a teacher and helping my family’s business, I felt the need to have more professional experiences in the field of politics, which was still my main area of interest. The experience I do have comes from purposely taking internationally focused courses and interning with Buckner International. Taking international public relations, I worked with a team to create a campaign aimed at reducing the amount of littering in Lagos, Nigeria and conducted a solo research project exploring the cultural attitudes of Sri Lankans toward journalists. My other efforts include creating an advertising strategy for a micro-wind turbine in Croatia, researching the history of organic food trends in Germany, and writing a news article about attitudes toward Islamic religious attire in the workplace. Interning at Buckner International, I had limited experience with international communication but I was able to see firsthand how international organizations work to maintain a cohesive communication plan. While these courses and my internship helped me establish a foundation of knowledge, I know I have much to learn about communicating on the global scale.
After that, international partnerships in higher education in general will be explored, and then the focus
My interest in intercultural communication and determination of pursuing a career in international education motivated me to apply for the MA ICBP at Warwick University. Being born in Puerto Rico, I was raised with different customs and celebrating different traditions. After moving to the United States at the age of 10, I began to further understand how ethnicity plays a pivotal part in an individuals life. How the individual thinks and acts are tied down to where he/she comes from. With that mindset, at an early age I began to develop a global mentality. Obtaining an undergraduate in business has sparked my interested in further learning about how business are conducted globally.
