As I sit in math class, I stare at the page covered in letters and numbers that may not seem as if they mean anything, but when you think, it all comes together. I analyze the problem, think about how to solve it, and then solve it accordingly. I make numbers and variables dance along the paper until it comes to a solution, or none, or multiple. It may be wrong but it is all just about learning. I can then incorporate this new knowledge and get more answers right in the future.

I have an altruistic component to my character which includes coaching elementary children, tutoring others, and volunteering at school, blood drives and with the community. I am the president of my high school’s Math Club, which entails numerous hours of organizing and volunteering. Through careful planning, I am able to bring in a wide variety of students, all of whom carry distinct characteristics. It is because of Math Club they have been brought out of their comfort zones and have built new connections with students they have never spoken to before. One reason mathematics is my favorite subject is because it can easily be associated with numerous everyday tasks. Sure, not every lesson acquired in class is going to play a role in a future career, but many of the skills learned will be put to use at some point in life. For example, it is essential to use math skills when baking to ensure that the ingredients are properly measured out, otherwise, the end result will not be close to what is expected.

Growing up as a child of an immigrant mother and father, I was told to go to school, be successful academically, and land a well-paying job. Thus, in my younger years the majority of the classes I have taken felt more like chores and not something I enjoy learning. However, that all changed when I took chemistry in the second year of high school. I was incredibly fascinated and intrigued by how the world is created by the arrangement of molecules and within these molecules has even smaller particles of atoms and even smaller particles of protons, neutrons, and electrons. While I am pretty good at intuitively finding solutions to problems, in a 30-question test, or during normal class time, I often find that true understanding can be put on the backburner. I really love truly understanding a concept, as it gives me great satisfaction when I can finally intuitively visualize a situation in math and science. I love math and science at my high school, and I appreciate the immense breadth of opportunities offered (I’m currently taking pre-calc and honors physics, and aim to take AP Physics and AP Calculus next year).
