The outstanding achievements that define the College of Arts and Sciences are a source of inspiration for all. In a short period of time, it has been exciting to see how our faculty and students have moved the college to become one of the best global public research colleges in the country. This is due to its deep commitment to solving real-world problems through excellence in research, while providing an outstanding and affordable liberal arts education and engaging students’ talents in the global world in which we live.
I recognize how privileged I am to lead the College of Arts and Sciences, the oldest and largest college at the University of Nebraska – Lincoln, with such talented, creative and ambitious people. Here are a few highlights that demonstrate my excitement for what all the members of this college have accomplished:
• Among our many students’ achievements and

I am happy to report that the College of Arts and Sciences was the college leading in the enrollment growth for the university with ca. 7%.
Not only did we see growth in our student body of the College of Arts and Sciences, but we also added 30 new faculty members to the college. Our faculty is diverse with more than 20% women and 30 % faculty of color. I look forward to working with our new faculty in supporting them to be our next education and research leaders, bring innovation to our curriculum and conducting groundbreaking research.
In other important news, I want to encourage you to join us for the Future of the Humanities Symposium, March 9-11, on the University of Nebraska-Lincoln campus. I look forward to the meaningful debate and dialogue about the nature, scope and future direction of the humanities. I am excited about the array of cross-cultural and cross-disciplinary speakers coming to engage with
As a member of the admissions board for the United States University, I would like to nominate ten very accomplished individuals for acceptance into this year’s class. These ten individuals have shown their dedication in their respective fields and offer to better not only the university, but put their efforts to work together for the betterment of society. Along with these ten nominations, I have created a two person waitlist should any of the ten choose not to accept their acceptance and attend United States University this coming fall. The ten applicants I nominate for acceptance: Clarence Darrow, Charles Dawes, Babe Ruth, Robert Jones, Harold Grange, Langston Hughes, Ernest Hemingway, Duke Ellington, Charles Lindbergh, and Margaret Sanger.
Being honored for the award led the school to be even more diverse. They engaged themselves so much in racial and ethnic unity which led to intentional diversity because of that the honor for the award was no longer considered, Scheller was told during an interview with Michael Scales and David Turk, the president and provost of the college. (Michael Scales & David Turk para. 1). Intentional diversity
As I strive to achieve great academic success and leadership at Montana State University, I hope that my previous experiences will catalyze this process. Using my interests in academics, participation in extracurricular activities, and my own strengths, I hope to become a strong leader. I know I can achieve being both a scholar and an example for other students by utilizing my previous experiences. When I start my journey at Montana State, I expect to find students with common academic interests as myself. My goal is to connect with these students, who appreciate education in a similar way I do, in order to help each other understand topics or lessons that we will learn.
in History and Liberty’s graduate program will serve as a respectable and valued stepping stone on my way while allowing me to continue my professional career and support my family. This is invaluable to me as military service member serving in the United States Navy Reserves and a secondary educator in the world of professional development. As a student I enjoy research and have a thirst for knowledge however I also enjoy serving as a contributor to that research as well. During my undergraduate time at the University of South Carolina I elected to write an undergraduate thesis on Theodore Roosevelt’s Great White Fleet predicated on the fact that I truly enjoy research based learning.
At the university, I see myself pioneering in new frontiers of research, through the Beckman Scholars Program, while involving myself in community outreach programs, as I have done locally in my city's Human Relations Commission, by playing an active role in the Woodlawn Children's Promise Community. Located in a vibrant city with a multitude of resources, the University of Chicago is the ideal gateway for me to continue making an impact in society and pursuing scientific research opportunities.
As I sit in the basement of the Lilly Library, surrounded by friends who have become family in a few short months, covered in calculus and EQ notes, and listening to some Duke Ellington jazz music for my Music 101 class, I can’t help but reflect on what this year has meant to me and my development as a student, athlete, brother, friend, and person. I entered Wabash College not exactly sure what to expect; I knew it was going to be different, but I also knew that with change I wanted to keep an open mind that was ready to learn and grow. Freshman tutorial and especially enduring questions are two classes that have pushed my boundaries as a person, forcing me to question core beliefs and ideas that seemed previously engrained in my mind. Throughout
The Goodnight Scholarship at North Carolina State University is an opportunity like no other. Going beyond providing the financial means for an outstanding STEM education from one of the top universities in North Carolina, the scholarship also provides recipients with valuable experiences that develop their personal, academic, and professional futures. If selected as a member of the Goodnight Scholars Class of 2027, I would be elated by the honor of participating in the program. I am excited about the prospect of being part of a community full of support, engaging in extensive professional and personal development, and partaking in service, travel, and culturally enriching opportunities. I know that the Goodnight Scholarship will enhance my
UC Can Beat the Hydra of Racism “Long may she live, her children's pride, and grow and prosper far and wide. At all time let our motto be: stand first and last for old UC.” The lyrics of the University of Cincinnati’s famous song, ‘Alma Mater’, aptly presents the devotion of each student to keep the flame of our school pride alive. Remembering these lyrics has never been as crucial as it is now, a time of deep sorrow and shame after the murder of Samuel Dubose.
I remember the talks my mother gave me each morning in our 1997 Aerostar van, which my mother had cleaned houses to pay for. She always instilled that we were fortunate, even if we were struggling, we were fortunate. She had jobs, she had her health, we were a family, and for those things we would always have to be grateful. My love for academics immediately set me apart from the world in which I had always been an insider. I was immediately labeled differently from my family members outside of my immediate family, who felt that academic pursuits were a waste of time and money.
The Graduate Studies Speaker Series is being held to celebrate the 15-year anniversary of interdisciplinary graduate programs at UCF. The Speaker Series is meant to revolve around integrative concentrations at UCF by bringing influential spokespeople to campus who are using multifaceted skills to bring about positive social
Now, I am ready to continue on this scholarly journey by attending Texas Southern University. My interest in Texas Southern comes from my admiration with Historically Black Colleges and Universities, the location of the university and the reputation of Master of
Whether it’s getting coffee together at Harper Cafe in the morning, talking in the Quad after lunch, or grabbing dinner in my House dining hall, I know that my classmates and their bona fide passion for whatever they're studying—government, economics, or theology—will fuel me to drive for excellence and impact both during and long after my four arduous years at the University. In brief, I hope that this letter finds the committee well and that I will be able to call UChicago home this August.
Come spring I envision myself in the midst of Locust Walk, taking the upperclassmen’s place, running my own table on STEM education or disease awareness. The College of Arts and Sciences, specifically its Health and Societies major, combines multiple
Once I actively started researching the University I found the faculty helpful, interested, and swift to reply to any queries I sent. The Department also houses a multitude of specialists in all the fields I am looking to study. Professors Blackhawk for Native America; Professor Cronon for Native Americans, the West, and the Frontier; Professor Kantrowitz for southern culture, racism and white supremacy; Professor Lee on slavery; Professors Stern and Scarano for slavery in Latin America and the Caribbean respectively; Professors Spear and Thomas on Africa, its pre-colonial culture, and the Diaspora; Professor Cohen for Colonial and early America, Religion and Native Americans; Professor Boydston for westward expansion and Removal, as well as others in the broad categories of African-Americans, the South, and
Good afternoon Dr. Weitz, faculty and staff, family and friends, and my fellow students. It is my honor to be standing before you as your 2017 graduation speaker. During my time at Reading Area Community College I could interact with so many of you through classes, Campus Life and the Leadership Institute. I found that we are a very diverse group of people. We all came from different walks of life.
