WOMAN IN TECH: When I was a little girl all I could think of was the stars… but not the glitzy ones from Hollywood, the ones up there in the sky. I dreamt about going to space and became obsessed with the space program. To learn more about it I immerse myself into the realms of the internet to learn every single thing that I could and that’s when I found out about so many careers that combined my passions. I enrolled in a computer science class in high school and then head on to software engineering in college.
The side that I enjoy the most about my career is the problem solving aspect of it. I can feel the satisfaction of engaging in tasks or developing solutions that will turn things (programs or hardware) into something more effective and efficient.

It’s known that, in the recent years, men have outnumbered women in every STEM field. Sometimes your abilities get overlooked; there’s a stat that indicates that 64 percent of women in tech report negative interactions with her male co-workers, and my experience was not an exception to that. Also there are double standards: A men can be considered ambitious and smart, meanwhile women can be thought of as bossy, which makes it a little more difficult to embark on leadership roles.
But even with these difficulties I cannot think of doing anything else, because I am one of the lucky few that gets to do what she loves. And if you are a girl interested in tech, all I can say is be true to your passion, keep your mind open to new ideas and be ready for change and if an opportunity comes, whether in the form of a chance to be in a science fair, starting your own science club or joining a coding program, take it and enjoy every minute of creation, failure and invention that comes with these
The career that fascinates me and what I plan to be when Im older, is a Dental Hygienist. A dental hygienist is a stressful job, but it helps a lot of people. You are helping people get better teeth and even look better, because when people have straight pretty teeth, they seem to have an upgrade in their looks. I haven’t always wanted to be a dental hygienist, I had many other career choices. But, something about making people smile when I’m the reason they look good doing it makes me happy.
The three careers I chose to examine were IT Security Administrator, Forensics Investigator, and Obstetrician Gynecologist. I chose these careers because I discovered that the employment rates for these jobs are expected to grow at a faster than average 37% from 2012-2022. This is because data security threats are growing and with more digital technology rising, more organizations have become victims of cyber crimes. The other career is what I want to be. Internet Security Administrators, also known as computer security specialists, or Internet security specialists, protect computer systems against attack.
Women also commonly face a lack of promotional opportunities in the workplace. Men are often favored or given more opportunities than women for leadership positions. Women are even overlooked for these positions, even when highly (or overly) qualified. Michelle Harper covers this issue in many different interviews and in her book. She was often turned down promotional opportunities due to being a woman in medicine.
The U.S. Department of Labor (U.S. Department of Labor, n.d.) provided valuable statistics that revealed significant disparities in pay and opportunities between genders. This data highlighted the importance of addressing not only pay inequality but also non-promotional tasks and biases that hinder women from obtaining leadership roles. I delved into academic articles, reports, and news sources to uncover the root causes and consequences of gender inequality. This research deepened my knowledge and equipped me with a better understanding of how to approach this
The career that I have decided I would like to have one day is as a veterinarian. I really enjoy and care for animals and love to help them. I have some pets of my own and help them when they need it. I really like science and math and think this job is perfect for me. Being a vet involves a lot of mathematics.
My interests in technology did not come until later in my life; when I attended my first engineering and technology workshop. Back in the summer of 2012 I was accepted into the Rowan University’s Boys Engineering, Science, and Technology (BEST) Program. Throughout the event I was in awe and fascinated by what engineering had to offer. We built bottle rockets and constructed penny bridges, but what stood out to me the most was the hands on experience with computer programming.

Growing up life seemed hard, but now I realized how amazing it was; I had a family who loved me and I was never seen different (discriminated), I was always told I had four very impart jobs: have respect for people even if I didn’t like them, do good in school, always ask questions and never forget where I came from, little did I know I realized where I came from after I left. Did you know that women are being hired by the top 8 tech firms in the world at a rate 238% faster than men? Perhaps it's only a matter of time before society embraces a female Mark Zuckerberg or Steve Jobs. In a new infographic, Coupofy.com looked at the growing female role in the tech industry and some of the trailblazers that are opening those doors. Of course one sure fire way for a woman to secure a role in the tech industry is to found a tech startup herself. 20% of all such businesses are now founded by women.
Life is our stage; we all have a certain role to play, some of us have more roles than others, this doesn’t make them more important, this just means they have more conflicts of strains on the roles they play. Henslin (2015) quoted Shakespeare, “All the world’s a stage and all the men and women merely players. They have their exits and their entrances; and one man in his time plays many roles… (William Shakespeare, As You Like It, Act II, Scene 7)” (pg. 103). Each one of these roles has different conflicts, are anything from choosing work over a social event or a friend over a spouse.
Women comprise 48 percent of the United States workforce, but just 24 percent of the Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) fields. A study by Gaucher found that job advertisements for male-dominated careers tended to use more argentic words (or words denoting agency, such as "leader" and "goal-oriented") associated with male stereotypes. The stereotype threat is one of the important reasons domestic females are underrepresented in STEM field. Because stereotype threats bring females extra stresses, they could lead to negative academic performances for females, especially for those studying mathematics and science. In our advanced 21st century, it is hard to imagine our society as anything short of perfect. After all, we have come a long way from our seafaring ancestors. However, the reality is that despite how we may sometimes avoid seeing it, our society is anything but perfect. A very prevalent issue today is that despite laws being set in place to enforce the equal treatment of men and women, women all over the world today still face poor treatment and discrimination. Because of how deep and long this problem has run, revising discriminatory laws may not abolish discrimination and legislating laws that endorse gender equality may not necessarily create equality.
In her widely watched 2010 TED talk “Why We Have Too Few Women Leaders” (currently with more than 1.5 million views) Sheryl Sandberg, currently Chief Operating Officer of Facebook (and the first woman to serve on Facebook's board) and formerly Vice President at Google, shares her experience of being one of the rare women in top global management positions and offers advice to women who would like to succeed in their corporate careers. In the 15-minute video, Sandberg asks how we can fix the problem of having too few women in top leadership positions in spite of many advances in women’s rights being made. She argues that the solution lies with women themselves, as individuals, and the messages they need to tell themselves and their daughters. This entails three steps: (1) ‘sit at the table’, meaning women should negotiate for themselves more assertively and stop underestimating their abilities; (2) ‘make your partner a real partner’ and establish shared/equal responsibilities between partners at home (i.e. with raising children and housework); and (3) ‘don’t ‘leave’ before you leave’, which means continuing to work at the best of your abilities (i.e. ‘leaning in’ instead of ‘leaning back’ when the possibility of having a child is entertained) until
Feminism, as it has previously existed, was concerned over the inequality felt between men and women. As time has passed, and feelings and thoughts have changed, this definition has also something that has been changed. Into what, one may ask, is still a question left to be answered. Feminism to me is more than just about the inequality of the sex’s, but also inequality between genders, (of which there are more than two, or in some cases none). But also, more than just gender: race, sexuality, age, class, ability, the list goes on.
Have the kids ever thought of what career they're at work to accomplish when they’re done with school and college? This is a question that people have in his or her mind. In order to determine a possible career choice for the future, research has been able to construct a comparison and career between these two different careers. Nevertheless, software developers and chemists have similarities but, they also have differences in deciding which is suitable and may be a difficult choice.
