College Athletes Should Be Paid

Ryan Vanderfords’ article published in the Southern California Interdisciplinary Law Journal explores this issue of whether or not college athletes should be paid beyond what they receive in scholarships. Vanderford is currently a law associate at a law firm in Los Angeles, California. He played sports throughout high school and college, so the author can relate to this topic. The payment of college athletes has become a more prominent issue in today’s society then it has been in the past. He argues that at major universities, student athletes help the school generate their revenue and therefore should be paid.

There is currently nothing systematically in place to provide funds to the sports athletes who generate so much for the universities, and the revenue continues to climb for the NCAA, as they claim a scholarship is sufficient enough even the playing field amongst universities and their athletes and stress that the uproar will change college sports forever. The public has seen the exploitation of these athletes and are asking questions regarding the legitimacy of the structure and are now demanding these athletes be compensated for there hard work. So as the money skyrockets for the NCAA, the athletes are left needing amendments to the power structure that has held them down for so long; in order to change this Congress must step in make sure

Are they students or employees? They spend more time with the sport than in school. Student athletes should be acknowledged for their performances. College athletes should be paid to play because they bring money into the school, advertisement, and they perform the same tasks of pros. College kids bring in thousands of dollars every game day.

Horace Michell in his article, “Students Are Not Professional Athletes,” and Dave Zirin in her article, “An Economist Explains Why College Athletes Should Be Paid.",” offers differing views on why student athletes should and or shouldn’t be paid. Horace States that College Athletes are not proficient competitors who are paid pay rates and motivating forces for a profession in games. They are students getting access to a school instruction through their cooperation in games, for which they procure grants to pay educational cost, charges, food and lodging, and other permissible costs. University games are not a vocation or calling. It is the understudies' vehicle to an advanced education degree.

According to New Direction in Public Opinion, Ideology can be defined as, “shared belief systems that reflect some groups understanding of the social world and its vision of what that world should ideally look like” (Berinsky, A., 2012). Ideology relates to the issue of college athletes being paid in several ways, one side being, political elites such as the NCAA’s ideological views on the topic and one side being the college athletes of the NCAA. The NCAA is the political elite of college athletics.. The NCAA holds the position that collegiate athletes are considered amateur athletes and it should be illegal to receive compensation for their actions on the field. NCAA President Mark Emmert echoed this in 2014 when he said “The overwhelming majority of student-athletes, across all sports, play college athletics as part of their educational experience and for the love of their sport — not to be paid a salary.”

Should College Football Players Get Paid? If professional players get paid to play, should college players get paid as well? Should college football players get paid? It’s the students choice if they play sports or not, many colleges could afford to pay the players, but others wouldn't have the funds, also the NCAA and it’s member institutions wouldn't have the funds to pay every player.

Have you ever worked so hard for something and not get credit? Maybe your didn’t get paid… or your name wasn’t posted with your work. This is exactly what is happening to our college athletes. They work so hard yet they don’t earn anything from it besides a picture in the newspaper or feeling good after they win. What about outside of the sports?

Should NCAA Football Players get Paid? Did you know that 85% of NCAA football players live below the poverty line? This is just one of the many problems about student athletes in the NCAA. College football players should be paid because they simply do not have enough time for a job between college and sports and these student athletes sacrifice their bodies for the love of the game.

Personally, I disagree with Harnett's viewpoint and I don't believe college athletes should be paid due to education, funding, and overall fairness. To summarize Harnett's article, he starts by talking about his opponents and their viewpoints on the situation, "They are already getting a scholarship, don't be greedy."

There has been major discussion recently if college athletes should or shouldn 't be paid while they are in school. Some people say that they are already getting a scholarship which is more than anybody else, therefore they believe it is considered being greedy. Let 's not be greedy and look at how much a scholarship is actually worth. In college most athletes don 't last at a school for the whole four years.

College athletes put in a lot of time, effort, and work into the sport they’ve played since they were young, but they aren’t getting paid for it. These student athletes deserve to be paid because they put in countless hours of hard work and balance sports with school work. The first reason athletes in college do deserve to be compensated is because they don 't have time to fit in work with a school and athletic schedule. College athletes don’t have time to get a real job. Student athletes have a very busy schedule, they don’t have time to fit in a job.

College sports is one of the best-known entertainments around the world. But for the athletes, they are students first then athletes second. For college student-athletes, there are a variety of scholarships and grants to help pay for college or college debt. However, some critics say that student-athletes should be paid a salary like pro athletes would, with help from scholarships or grants. The authors of, College Athletes are being Educated, not Exploited, Val Ackerman and Larry Scott, argue that student-athletes are already paid by free education and other necessities.
