Should the NCAA Pay College Athletes? College athletes spend just as much, or more time at practice, games, and traveling, as they do in the classrooms studying. This issue is very common in the NCAA. There 's been former players suing the NCAA for not getting payed. They’ve been put on video games, clothes, and on magazines, but they don’t get a penny for it. CBS nearly pays the NCAA $530 million dollars to televise the NCAA basketball tournament every March. The NCAA makes the money with them being on the video games. Today as much money that flows in and out of sports. Some people think that college athletes should get some of the payment, and others do not. The debate about "should the NCAA pay the athletes?" Has recently been debated, and has been a big problem with the NCAA. First, since college football has been popular for almost 100 years. For example, a fact that said "college football started to become really popular back in the 19th century" (NCAA Paying the …show more content…
First, the athletes get a free luxury atop of their scholarships. In fact, the athletes who get $40,000- $50,000 scholarships can enjoy luxury and academic services (Chaudacoff page 2). Also, the students that don 't have a scholarship can enjoy these awesome options. Next, the athletes get free clothes from their specific sport. For example, most colleges/University 's athletes walk the campuses in free and new Nike, Under Armour, and Adidas all free (Chaudacoff page 2). In this situation, this is a reason why they shouldn’t because they get all this free stuff. Finally, not all athletes compete in big divisions. Obviously, some athletes compete in divisions/conferences that make very little or no money for their schools (Paying college athletes). In fact, if schools don’t make as much as other schools, how would they pay them? In brief, athletes with scholarships have the life at college, they also get free clothes
The only difference between the programs is people like to watch football and basketball more, so it brings in more money. If all athletes cannot be paid, no athletes should be paid. Athletes are already paid by being given a scholarship. Not having to pay for a college education is something many people dream of. Most colleges provide their athletes clothes, meals, textbooks, and even tutoring.
It has been a debate for many years on if and why college athletes should or should not get paid. Once the season starts for the sports the questions seems to arise, and there are many interesting conversations about it. Many people feel that athletes are being used and the NCAA are making millions of dollars. These college athletes help pay a big portion of the salaries of everyone employed with the NCAA.If these executives that work for the NCAA are driving nice cars and getting paid well then they should thank their athletes for their hard work that earned the franchise lots of money. The point is if these coaches and anyone else who works with the NCAA earn tons of money from the student athletes ,then they should get some too.
College athletes also bring in an incredible amount of money. Journalist Michael Wilbon has written that seeing the $11 billion deal between the NCAA and CBS/Turner Sports for March Madness between 2011 and 2024 prompted him to change his mind about paying student- athletes. This deal shows the amount of money the NCAA is bringing in over the course of one month alone. March Madness is one of the most watched sporting events in the country.
According to Smith, "Paying college athletes would fundamentally change college sports and undermine the principles of amateurism and fair competition that they are built upon. "(Smith) He argues that college athletes are already receiving valuable benefits and paying them would create an unfair advantage for certain programs and lead to a decline in the quality of college sports. " The NCAA is already facing issues with competitive balance between schools, and paying players would only exacerbate those issues,"(Smith) he adds. Additionally, the article points out that "paying college athletes would raise questions about how much they should be paid, and whether or not they should be taxed.
Jack Evans S. Blount Assignment 4 - Argumentative Research Paper – Final Draft May 4, 2023 Should college athletes be paid? American intercollegiate athletics are deeply engrained into the college culture and are beloved by students and spectators alike. Collegiate national championships are just a few examples of athletic events that draw in thousands of spectators, millions of televised viewers and over a billion dollars annually for universities across the country. The business of collegiate athletics is enormous.
College athletes are not receiving a physical paycheck; instead they are receiving a scholarship that is worth much
The question has come up for years now, should college athletes be paid? This has become an issue with college athletes because they believe that they sometimes are a big contribution to their universities. This can be true for those universities with big and successful athletic programs. Athletes from all different kinds of sports also believe that they are sometimes the reason to which why some athletes and students choose to attend that certain school and that they are generating a lot of profit for the school. Many fight for college athletics to be paid and then there are those who do not want them to get paid because of the consequences that may occur.
College athletes deserve to be paid because they are the only ones not being paid in the college sports industry. The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) generates eleven billion dollars annually, some of which could, and should go to college athletes. “USA Today reported last year just how much money the top 10 coaches in college football made. Nick Saban from Alabama topped the list earning roughly $5.5 million in 2013 alone” (Seibold). The coaches are making millions of dollars and the players aren’t.
Taking a look at the average college student, should they be paid for what they are studying? Probably not. Then why should college athletes be paid? They shouldn 't get paid just because of their athletic ability. They shouldn 't be paid because they are students, not professionals.
Because money corrupts, student-athletes shouldn 't expect it or want it and should simply play their game out of love...whilst providing entertainment to the masses and technically earning millions of dollars for TV networks, colleges and the NCAA. While one could argue overly the ludicrous and truly unethical contradictions of the argument "play for free, play for purity," that would dignify the belief that student pensions are the only answer to the current system; which is not true. There are countless flaws with the current system and just as many solutions, only one of which involves universities handing out a biweekly check to their
According to the NCAA, college athletes often receive grants worth more than $100,000”, (Birkenes and Bagaria). Scholarships alone are a form of payment itself, an athlete does not need to be compensated on top of that. Paying tuition is no joke, students spend years in college debt. Athletes don’t have to stress about student loans. Furthermore, athletes should not be compensated when they are being granted thousands of dollars to cover their education, tuition, and housing.
"Over the last decade, the debate of whether or not college athletes should be paid has intensified, and many athletes, as well as coaches, have begun to advocate for the cause." (TIMES) Tyler Harnett, a writer at the Huffington Post, took his standpoint on the topic in the article "Why College Athletes Should be Paid," which clearly states his claim, college athletes should be paid. Personally, I disagree with Harnett's viewpoint and I don't believe college athletes should be paid due to education, funding, and overall fairness. To summarize Harnett's article, he starts by talking about his opponents and their viewpoints on the situation, "They are already getting a scholarship, don't be greedy."
Therefore should college athletes get paid? Well if they do once they graduate they will live a good life. They have enough money to pay for their house bills or etc. But what if college athletes would actually get paid, but will it be fair if only the good ones get paid and the not so good ones not?
The million dollar question; should college athletes be paid? This is an immense debate, but if you were to ask me, I would say yes, college athletes should be paid. There are a plethora of reasons why college athletes should get paid. College athletes should get paid because of the amount of time they put into their sport, the amount of money everyone else is making off of them, and their overall importance to the school. There are a myriad of reasons that people can argue the opposite way, but, the reasons they should get paid definitely outweigh the reasons they shouldn’t get paid.
This would be not fair to hard-working students who cannot afford college and rely on scholarships and aid. Unfortunately, athletes focus more on performance than on academics, and scholarship money may go to
