As the first person in my family to attend college, I realized how privileged my life has been and how much higher education could make a difference to me and my family. Being excited, I embarked on a journey to improving writing, communication and critical thinking, and exploring innovative ideas for personal development and social values. This remarkable experience inspired me to pursue a Ph.D. My goal is to develop a better understanding of research and teaching, thus building a skill set to fulfill my aspiration while serving in the academic field.
This idea of pursuing a Ph.D. first stemmed from my undergraduate education in Guilin University of Technology, China. I gained basic skills of mathematics, English, and computer techniques; most importantly, I became interested in the field of urban planning after working in the land-use planning institute in Guilin. I learned how to use planning software (e.g., MapGIS,

Then, working as the director of the construction office at three different planning and construction bureaus in China, I was in charge of three major roads (~four miles), 15 affordable housing apartments, and one plaza planning and construction management projects. Immersed in the construction projects that shape the built environment, I became more inclined to seek better transportation planning initiatives and how these facilities actually upgrade the accessibility to work, shopping and entertainment. These accomplishments really nourished my curiosity to explore sustainable experience abroad. Meanwhile, I served as an English volunteer teacher online after work, and opened my own school to serve the local community. These services have benefited around 10,000 people online and offline. The initial combination of my work and volunteer experiences has affirmed my choice of transportation planning within the education
It is not only my intellectual curiosity, but also my passion towards giving back to the community, that will lead me to success. As a UD honors student, I plan on joining organizations and performing volunteer work that I have done in high school. It will allow me to consolidate my musical and creative passions, while participating in new extracurricular activities pertaining to sports and community service. I believe that with the University of Delaware’s many opportunities, I can have the potential to become a strong leader and active member of the UD Honors community. The lessons that I have learned from working with these children will forever remain a part of me, as I hope to grow to be someone who will one day be able to change society, and will remind me to always dare to
Every day, multitudes of things are competing for our attention. Billboards line every street, commercials interrupt every enticing program, and our phones are constantly beckoning us to check them. And no, this is not the beginning of another trite piece of literature that is going to complain about how the growth of advertising and technological innovation is the decline of the human race. In fact, I embrace it. The world is changing, and with so much to be involved in, competition for our attention is healthy and necessary to keep things that we want to see accessible.
Serving as a Peer Health Educator and working in various patient care roles allowed me to further immerse myself in health care. Taking on a multitude of volunteer opportunities in my youth and continuing to today has furthered my passion to become a care giver and helped me develop my leadership, communication, and team
Four years ago, I left the shores of Nigeria to pursue a higher education at the University of Ottawa. I know most people when they are younger are not sure of what career path to follow, ye I always knew I wanted to be a lawyer. Ever since I could remember, I have always felt deep compassion towards other human beings. It is disappointing to watch people lose their basic human rights. My program has educated me and changed my worldly views.
When I was younger, one of my favorite things to do was to hop in my grandpa’s old, red Chevy pickup and ride down to our family’s farm with him. We would spend all day doing various jobs including scouting crops. Each summer I would spend more time scouting crops with my grandpa. He would share stories about particular growing seasons that he remembered and he shared a vast amount of agronomic knowledge with me. Over time, scouting with my grandpa turned into a passion.
Being cognizant of the benefits of education and utilizing my education to best prepare myself for the upcoming stage in my life, regardless of assigned work, has enhanced my academic performance.
My fascination with various systems of the human body began at an early age, and continues to grow. My natural inclination was always towards Biology, I was hardly 9 years old when I taught myself how to draw the respiratory system and the veno-capillary system. A trait of my personality which I think differentiates me from other applicants is my creativity. Creativity is, in my opinion, a very important characteristic of a good physician, as it is a help during investigation processes and in difficult diagnosis situations
I am able to relate to people and work hard to make the experience I am participating in rewarding for all individuals involved. Throughout my educational path, I have observed and participated in a variety of different areas involving caring for others. Each opportunity was unique and impacted me in different ways, making me the person I am today. Volunteering at a summer camp with children with muscular dystrophy taught me the importance of communicating with others and the value of patience. Interacting with patients in a hospital setting gave me the opportunity to distract patients and make their stay at the hospital more tolerable.
When I was growing up, there was a huge emphasis put on what college a person was attending. My parents always wanted what was best for me which equated to a college with name recognition and a prestigious history. I always believed them until I went on my first college visit. All the lectures and tours were focused on the aspects my parents fixated on but when I talked to students, it was a whole different story. They did admit that a school’s quality of education was important to them along with how future employers would evaluate their undergrad degree.
At the same time, I was a volunteer at a community center, teaching weekly courses on basic job skills for over 5 years. This experience kept me grounded as I built great relationships with my pupils, taught job skills for a changing market, and watched them succeed in new careers. After solidifying my reputation in my workplace and community, I made the decision to walk away and pursue a career in
“Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?” (Matthew 22:36). Jesus replied, ” ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment” (Matthew 22:37-40).
My doctoral journey seems longer than the average. I'm hustling in my own time zone and growth with the detour I have ever taken. Most of my family members received their higher education in different areas, and I chose Animal Science as the starting point to accomplish my dreams. Animal-related research had always fascinated me and my interest in the field dates back to my childhood when I was fond of observing animals in the zoo and farm, and it eventually motivated me to choose a related major. Throughout my four-years of undergraduate study at Sichuan Agricultural University, I had great chance to participate in dermatology research on giant pandas, which built the foundation for my passion.
Whether I achieve my goals inside or outside classroom, the sense of accomplishment upon completing a strenuous hike or a difficult climb is a feeling I want to continue experiencing for the rest of my life. At MIT, we seek to develop in each member of our community the ability and passion to work collaboratively for the betterment of humankind. How have you improved the lives of others in your community? (This could be one person or many, at school or at home, in your neighborhood or your state, etc.) (*) (200-250
I’ve always enjoyed helping people because it gives me a warm feeling knowing I am making a difference in someone’s life. I attended a seminar called Stemposium, which exposed me to the STEM fields I could pursue in my life. I became interested in the field of Civil Engineering after going to the Army Corp of Engineers building in Wiesbaden during STEMposium. I saw the many projects they were working on, such as building containment centers and hospitals in Africa when the Ebola epidemic was on the rise. After experiencing that, I knew what I wanted to do with my life.
For me, I have a significant experience that inspired me want to study in Korea. I had a great opportunity to be a representative from the Thai Red Cross to join in The 3rd Model IFRC General Assembly in Korea. When I arrived in Korea, I found that Korea is the leader in technology, and have developed at all times. I have experience with the Korean culture, lifestyle of Korean people. I have seen the differences between Thailand and Korea.
