Nigeria had been under Britain’s colonial ruling for 6 decades. During that period, there were various parts of the country’s that underwent constant reclassification for governmental reasons. This constant change poses as the cause of difficulty in bringing the country together as one nation. Southern Nigeria was formed with the expansion of the Niger Coast Protectorate during the initial period. Lagos was the capital of Southern Nigeria. Meanwhile northbound, the idea of British ruling did not sit well among those who were ruling at the time. As a result, Frederick Lugard was given the position of high commissioner and commander-in-chief for the protectorate of northern Nigeria. Jos Plateau also known as Jos is a pear-shaped highland. It covers a region of around 8,600km2 or 860,000 hectares with a breadth from north to south which measures up to 104km and 80km from east to west. The Plateau displays a diversity of land forms which provide superb picnic resorts because of characteristics such as impressive ridges and secluded rocky hills separated by wide-ranging plains. An average height of 1,200m or 4,000 feet above sea level is maintained and reaches its highest peak at 1,766m or 5,829 feet in the Shere Hills. The arrays of hamlets and villages are another eccentric attribute of the Jos Plateau which furnished the landscape with colour and beauty. In many cases, cactus hedges bound these settlements together with the farm plots. In 1915, the city of Jos was initially established as a tin transportation camp and the prosperity of the tin mining industry links close to its ancient history. 61 years after the establishment, it first became the capital of the Benue-Plateau State followed by the Plateau State of Nigeria and has become a significant administrative and commercial centre. Due to this, people of distinct backgrounds such as race, tribe and religion leaving together can be found. Jos remains one of the most sophisticated cities in Nigeria with a population of approximately 800,000 and is adjudged the "home of peace" or as the safest city to live in Nigeria. The nation's capital, Jos is joined by road, rail and air to the rest of the country which is located near the geographical centre of Nigeria and around 288km from Abuja. It has a moderate climate averaging 22°C or 75°F daily with an average humidity of 60% and average yearly rainfall 1400 mm or 56 inches.
