Colonization of the Igbo Tribe Colonization as defined by the Oxford Dictionary is the act of settling or moving in and establishing a political control in an indigenous place. Colonization was primarily done because of three reasons. First, to use a territory in establishing a commercial interest; Second, to escape persecution; Third: in order to gain imperial foothold and extend the grasp of political power in other territories. (Yang, 2014) This derives us in to thinking that colonialism was done in order to enrich the mother land of the colonizers. During trade, a large part of the revenue goes to the colonizers rather than the owner of the land. This led to the inattention to the supplication of needs for the citizens of the places that …show more content…
The first three lines questions the motives of the colonizers where they claim to be for civilization and education yet they come with guns. The second stanza talks about the relationship presented by the colonizers which is friendship but the author questions why they are being whipped and why the colonizers covet what they have. Finally, third and fourth stanza expresses the author’s desire to get rid of the colonizers, to regain their lives and everything that was taken away from them. In the last three stanzas, the author is firm on its stand to drive the colonizers away by saying “go colonialism, go” and begging for freedom. The last line of the poem is “it’s sunrise in Africa” which may be a symbolism for a new beginning in Africa as the colonizers are to be driven away. Colonialism not only affected the economic growth and development of Africa, it also changed the work and gender roles of the place. Due to the drop in cash crop economy, women and children were forced to perform the bulk of labour in farming. (Settles, 1996)

Growing up, the narrator experienced a fair share of time between her mother and father. She described her father as a man of few words who would only talk to her things about work during the times that she assisted him with work while her mother was the more talkative one. Her mother told her stories about her past, the parties she had attended to and the guys who had courted her. Most of the time, the narrator spent time with her father helping him do his work. But a few years later, the narrator noticed the change in their household. Her mom no longer told her stories and used the word “plotting” to describe her mother who always had different schemes in order to keep her in the house to help with household chores. She had a suspicion that her mother did not appreciate her staying out of the house and helping her
Additionally, the main character describes their family, lifestyle, social behavior and the reason for their parent's decision through her narration:
The Igbos, who were located in West Africa, did not develop a new type of government similar to the Yoruba and Bini. They had begun to grow small states and urban centers, but the Igbo who had a dense population and extensive trading networks declined to follow. Igbo deliberately rejected the kingship and state-building efforts of their neighbors. The Igbos did not have no kings and they relied on institutions to maintain order beyond the village. They traded among themselves and with the large African kingdom of Songhai for cotton cloth, fish, copper and iron goods, and decorative objects.
When the narrator was younger he experiences neglect from both his father and mother. Flynn demonstrates how his childhood has an impact on how one is raised. Since the father of the narrator paid no attention to
The first colony was founded at Jamestown, Virginia, in 1607. Many of the people who settled in the New World came to escape religious persecution and various other reasons. In this paper we will explore the many roles both male and female colonists as well as Native Africans played. In the colonies gender played a large role in everyday life.
When she was young, she could not process the way her father raised and treated her, so she believed everything he said. When she is able to understand, her tone changes and becomes clinical and critical remembering the way he constantly let her
In the second chapter of Ronald Takaki’s A Different Mirror, he begins to elaborate on the fundamental principles many settlers sought to possess: expansionism. “The whole earth is the Lord’s garden and he hath given it to the sons of men [to] increase and multiply and replenish the earth and subdue it. Why then should we stand starving here for the place of habitation…and in the meantime suffer a whole continent as fruitful and convenient for the use of man to lie waste without any improvement”. In fact, these principles justified and empowered many imperialist countries to conquer lands of beneficial resources.
The other countries made many unfair changes without the consent of the people. When the other country went to take over the colonized government they demoted the current government officials in order to make new laws that benefited them. As the British imperialized the country of Nigeria, they also wiped out a lot of Nigerian tradition. For an example, a lot of traditional Nigerian authority figures were replaced. Along with this many Nigerian homes were transferred
His son marries, and the narrator and his wife age further, and the transition into old age is complete with the death of the narrator’s father-in-law. Between these events we can see large shifts in attitudes and ideas, as well as health and well-being. These factors provide clear character evolution within the
“Ashamed of my mother”, she states, but as she matured,
As she got older, Anne learned to view things more profoundly than she had before. Anne always had a complex relationship with her mother, and she often overlooked what her mother did for her. After having a nightmare and insisting on talking with her father about it, Anne confesses what she truly thinks about the way she presents herself. “ANNE: I have a nicer side, Father… But I’m scared to show it.
This shows that the colonizers would do whatever it took including taking over the people and using them as `near slaves ' for their own personal benefits. The results of this madness and greed can be best shown through “Fill full the mouth of Famine And bid-- / the sickness cease; And when your goal is nearest-- / The end for others sought,” The pros of imperialism, was that it had the tendency for a State to expand its territory and rule over larger areas is natural. The poem ‘white man’s burden’ relates to our generation in many ways. The movie “Avatar” was produced into ‘The White Messiah fable.’
People all over the world worship many gods, goddesses, and other higher beings. Some religions are monotheistic, worship one god or goddess, others are polytheistic, worship multiple gods and goddesses. The Igbo tribe is polytheistic because they worship many gods, goddesses, and spirits; such as, they worship a god named Chukwu, two minor gods, a minor goddess, and six different spirits. The first and most important being they worship, as stated by world eras, is a god named Chukwu.
The second speaker also reshapes the first two lines of the entire poem into a plea to the majority. Beforehand, the first speaker uses those lines as a call for the old American spirit to be revived: “Let America be America again / Let it be the dream it used to be” (1-2). Both speakers change the meaning of the lines to express their thoughts on America. As a result, the poem expresses the desire for everyone to be treated equally in the land of freedom. The readers can relate to the speaker because they wish that everyone has equal rights in the country that proclaims itself to be the symbol of freedom.
Colonialism integrated Africa into international labor division. Colonialism is when a country or state overpower a particular state by a use of propaganda for them to agree with their terms without the targeted state or country saying anything to the above-mentioned terms (Ocheni & Basil, 2012). Colonialism in Africa refers to the incident which took place during the 1800-1960s where European states came into Africa and exploit resources. This essay will validate the effects of colonialism in Africa and how it affected the economy of Africa states which led them to be in the current economic state, furthermore, it will outline how colonizers used their colonial methods to get Africans to change their indigenous ways of doing things.
The ideal cause and purpose of colonialism is to spread philanthropism, humanitarianism and enlightenment. The civilized people, however, only focus on military conquest and economic exploitation. Marlow
