Regarding the question, “should Columbus Day be abolished as a national holiday,” I have done some research using the documents provided, and this may persuade you in some way. First of all, Columbus is recognized as the first European explorer to discover the American continent. Christopher Columbus was planning on sailing to the East Indies to find a water trade route, instead of using a land route, which would take much longer. On his journey, he ran into the American continent, and discovered many natives, which he then turned them into slaves, and treating them very cruelly. If one was unable to mine enough gold in three months, then his or her hand would be chopped off by one of his men. Columbus day should be abolished because he turned …show more content…

For example, almost 500 years before Columbus arrived at America, there was a viking explorer named Leif Eriksson. Eriksson was the first viking to find the Americas, and science proves that he was the actual first. While he was not on the continent for very long, he still was the first to make it to this beautiful continent. Also, according to document 3, science has proven that many other explorers did find the Americas before Columbus. This stating that Columbus was far down the list of the first one to step on the land. People like the vikings were their 500 years earlier. True, Columbus did stay in America for longer than the vikings, and did bring Europeans to it, he caused much pain and suffering through this process. And while document 7, a science review by Dr. Warren H. Carroll, says that discovering is finding something that is new or unknown to civilization that finds it, and people can also be discovered, Columbus was the first at his time, but the title of being the First European to find the Americas is true, he was not the first person to actually go to America. Written records do say that the Viking were there the very first.
