Many women in the early 1900’s sought for change. Some rose to power and took leadership over many organizations that pushed for equality. Women’s battle for voting rights was specifically led by Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, and Alice Paul. These women devoted most of their life to create a foundation which we live upon today. Women’s struggles lasted many decades until they finally achieved some equality under the 19th amendment.

The 1920s represented the post-suffrage era when women made drastic social and cultural changes that affected the American women way of life. Women began to seek more rightsand equal representation through changes in social values. However, women still observed their primary responsibility for caring for the household; and also depended on men for monetary support (Martin, 1926). The 1920s, also known as the “Roaring Twenties”, was an exhilarating time full of significant social, economic, and political change. For most Americans, it was full of the prosperity and peace that followed World War I. Middle-class life was full of leisure and class. The 1920’s, or “The Roaring 20’s”, was a decade that witnessed exciting social changes. It was a time of prosperity and dissipation, bootleggers and jazz dancers, and most importantly, it was a decade of The Prohibition Era. The Prohibition Era is basically an era which banned the manufacture, transportation, import and export, and the sale of alcoholic beverages. It was meant to reduce crime, corruption, and social problems and increase the overall hygiene of America. However, this social and political experiment failed.

Coming of age is not an "all at once experience." It happens gradually as one slowly becomes mature. The main character, Tom Sawyer, from Mark Twain's novel The Adventures of Tom Sawyer is a great example of this. When the reader was first familiarized with Tom, he is shown as a prankster who cares about nothing and tries to skip work, but at the end of the novel Tom has matured, understands emotions, and knows what is right from what is wrong; therefore, Tom Sawyer has come-of-age.

The 1920s carried much change in society. Some of these changes were more rights for women, jazz music, and prohibition. The people of the 1920s were disillusioned by society lacking in idealism and vision, sense of personal alienation, and Americans were obsessed with materialism and outmoded moral values (The Roaring Twenties).Cultural changes were strongly influenced by the destruction of World War I ending 1918. America needed to recover and with it youth rebelled against the norms of the older generations.

What is the definition of "coming of age". According to the Oxford dictionary, "coming of age refers to the process of growing up or entering into adulthood". Now the other hand, Why does it happen? and finally, how does it affect ones health or mindset? These questions will all be answered from a specific perspective of a character and the main protagonist, in the book, "House On Mango Street". The main protagonist Esperanza, matures from a childish girl to a young confident woman through many critical and life changing events in the story. Ultimately, the author, Sandra Cisneros implements the symbols of confidence, the house on mango street and the metaphor of shoes to show how Esperanza develops into a more mature state.

Vacuum cleaners and washing machines became more common in america, and chain stores like Sears and JC penney started selling ready made clothes and conveniences. Coming of age is a time when a young adolescent’s life begins; A new chapter in their lives where life will start to become a roller coaster. There will be the ups in their lives and there will be the lows. However, the roller coaster of life will not be the only obstacle that the adolescent will encounter. As problems in the young adult life come and go, the young often pray for everything to go well and when it does they believe faith has taken its course causing the Generation-Z to rely heavily on faith. The book, A Prayer for Owen Meany by John Irving, tells a story of two boys, John Wheelwright and his childhood friend, Owen Meany. Owen is a midget and has a high voice, constantly bullied around with by his fellow students. He is “God's instrument” which greatly directs John’s life between faith and doubt. Owen's life is contemplated as an miracle; he has paranormal visions and outlandish dreams, he can tell the future of his life by knowing when his death nears and offers supernatural and almost unquestionable evidence of God's existence. This will send a message to people today that no matter what setbacks you have in life, it is always important to have faith.

The protagonist inclines to have an emotional loss, which triggers the commencement of the journey itself. The story tends to end on the main character being enlightened or also enlightening the society around him/herself. Although To Kill a Mockingbird, The Crucible, and Pleasantville have elements that may suppose the antipode, they are all an example of a Bildungsroman plot because of their connection to the coming of age.

As adolescences enter adulthood, they enter a long transitional period, often known as “emerging adult”. This transitional period takes place over a range of 18 to 25 years old (Santrock, 2013). At this stage, emerging adults are still in exploration in the various aspect of life such as the career path they are interested in, defining their identities and a style of living they would want to adopt. Thus, adolescences who are in transition will be caught with many intense changes and will experience major life events that are all of great importance.
