Have you ever wondered what it meant when people say “You are coming of age”?
Well, coming of age means becoming stable in life and being aware of how you affect people and experiences around you. Coming of age is finally becoming an adult. Coming of age has many key factors in it such as experiencing love and experiencing loss these are two main parts of coming of age. Though these may sound like little situations they can change perspectives on life. In the novel The Fault in Our Stars by John Green the main character Hazel experiences coming of age by loss. And in the novel Romeo and Juliet written by Shakespeare Juliet comes of age by experiencing love. At the beginning of the book, Hazel was very self-centered and naive in the way that she took almost everything for granted especially all that her mom was doing for her. Hazel's mom quit her job just to always be here for Hazel and spent all of her time trying to find treatment just because she loves her daughter. This quote shows Hazel's immaturity as she is not yet aware of the harsh realities of life and the fact that life is not always a smooth ride. Hazel eventually fell in love and had a boyfriend(Augustus) that she was always with the way she experiences coming of age is when Augustus was diagnosed with cancer again and had a limited amount of time to live and soon after, passed away. In the novel, Hazel told Augustus what he shouldn’t be doing and whether it was okay and safe to do. Hazel looked out for Augustus and didn’t want him to get hurt or more sick than he is right now. Not only does talk about diseases like Hazel Grace, but it also has more meaning to it. Hazel Grace has Cancer and its not just Cancer as Foster explains, instead it also is shows how Hazel is feeling. Illnesses such as cancer, usually represent sadness in the patient, and for some strength. But for Hazel Cancer is another way of showing that death is always their. Cancer tells the reader that Hazel is depressed and afraid to love because of death.
Losing Loved Ones And Losing yourself Have you ever lost something important to you or have you ever felt like you were losing yourself? Coming of age is anytime you make steps towards growing up whether you are 12 years old or 35. Anytime an event in your life causes you to grow up this is your coming of age. Finding one's identity and experiencing loss are two essential components of growing up and coming of age.
Even though she does not deal with handicaps, she wishes she could and could hear the sounds and be similar to the others. Hazel can never understand how it feels to deal with handicaps. In the article Growing up, a thirteen year old boys learns some important life lessons and matures. He matures because he came of age in the article. The main character started coming of age when he started lying to everyone just so he could get want he wanted. This new found skill in lying got him in a lot of trouble when his parents found out, and made him lie even more.
