Common Sense is a pamphlet written by Thomas Paine in January of 1776, about six months before the signing of the Declaration of Independence. During this time, independence was omnipresent in the minds of revolutionary Americans, such as Patrick Henry, John Adams, and Samuel Adams. Two years before the publication of Common Sense, the First Continental Congress assembled in Philadelphia in response to the Intolerable Acts passed by British Parliament, to punish the colonies for the Boston Tea Party. The First Continental Congress drafted the Declaration of Rights and Grievances, which called for a restoration of American rights, and listed complaints the colonies’ complaints against George III.
