Communication in Health and Social Care
Communication plays a crucial role in health and social care. Effective communication allows improving interpersonal relationships. This fact means that health and care service workers need to develop the proper communication skills to effectively communicate with service users. According to researchers, “people who use health, social care and early years services, are often dependent on care workers for obtaining and giving information” (Fisher, 2005, p. 53). As technology continues to provide benefits to various fields of human activity, the health and social care field is no exception. Today health and social care professionals effectively utilize these benefits, which provide considerable improvements in health and social care applications. A wide range of information and communication technologies (ICT) are used to enhance health and social care services (Martinho et al., 2013). Stephen A. In general, observation of communication process depends on the reflection of one’s own skills and abilities, and helps to improve care workers’ sensitivity to the interpersonal communication. Liam Clarke and colleagues (2000) state that a care worker should assume “a primary professional responsibility for the success of the interaction” (p. 71). It is very important for the care worker to address any misunderstandings regarding the client’s communication (Dickson et al., 1996).

It is good to have effective communication within the adult social care setting as communication is used every day. It is used to encourage our services users to perform tasks, either verbally or physically. It is used to document what has been done ready for the next worker to take over. It allows us to work as a team. It allows us to provide a good service to the best of our ability.
Communication is an essential piece of caring for patients. Multiple team members will collaborate when providing patient care. It is crucial that critical information is included in the numerous hand-offs that will occur. A lack of communication will definitely put the patient at an increased risk for errors and threaten patient safety. It is essential to include all members of the team.
Having the trust of the clients helps a lot when trying to figure out how you can help them when they are explaining their situation, they open up to you. If trust is not gained then the communication is affected because the client will not speak openly as if trust was present. * An example of difference in communication and the only thing that came to mind was how social workers advocate for their clients. Being effective social workers to gain the correct information and help their clients’

In particular, communication can affect the relationships with service users and other colleagues. When effectively communicating with colleagues, managers or health professionals, will ensure that ideas and opinions are understood. In a care setting, it is a requirement to use teamwork and communicate effectively.
Medical Assistants are there to help patients reach their needs. A medical assistant understands the need for effective communication and applies it in their field of work. They know the importance of knowing how to read the non-verbal messages patients make and respond to the needs they express. These include gestures and facial expressions (Bonewit-West, K. 2009). Knowing effective communications skill help the Medical assistant to observe with close attention to the patient and their needs.

The technological advancements have not only helped nurses to be better informed, but have also helped the clients to be better informed. Informed patients and families can help the nurses and HCPs by speaking up about symptoms they have noticed that the health care team may have been unable to witness or may have look past. I wish to pursue my career in the care profession, due to previous experiences looking after elderly people. Over the years my desire to continue working in the care sector has grown, along with the experiences gained throughout my previous studies. My interest in working with and around new people, has lead me on to completing a Health and Social Care short course, where I gained valuable knowledge on how to look after elderly and the disabled people. My role demands high levels of communication skills as it involves working with other agencies such as doctors, nutritionists, social workers, therapists, day center staff and police.

In order to work effectively with a service user line mangers, colleagues and families you must be able to meet their needs relationships are also governed by body language facial expression smiling and ways in which others listen and talk to you. If the communication is poor between you and a service user and with your work colleague the care the service user receives will not be right for them if you’re not talking to them or communicating with them how are you going to know what they like or don’t like.
This could be to specific group, for instance a support group for deaf people, teaching service users or for meetings. In group communication, every individual participating will try and get their personal ideas and thoughts across, especially if they disagree with a point raised (Storming stage: Tuckman group communication theory). In health and social care, group communication is mostly used in a meeting arrangement, as it allows a number of different agencies or care providers with in one agency to focus on particular aspect of care, or on a service user and the care that currently being provided. Communications between Colleagues not only on a one to one basis but in a group setting is key, to everyone working successfully, the performing stage of Tuckman group communication theory. Within a health and social care an absence or lack of tolerance and understanding for fellow employees might create a negative emotional atmosphere, it may only personally affect two people, but will ultimately affect everyone working with them, and possibly decreasing the level of care to their service
