I was pleased to hear of the creation of the Student and Family Advocate position within the Ames Community School District. I was raised in Ames and attended school here from preschool until I graduated in 2013. Once I started my degree program at Iowa State, I knew I wanted to work in education and that Ames would be the type of district I wanted to work for. I saw the advertisement for this position on the district website and knew it was the perfect fit for me. With extensive education in social services and experience working with children and families in an educational setting, I am prepared to become a valued member of the district and help the children and families that you serve.

Currently, I work at a daycare leading a group of twenty preschoolers. Working with these students has given me the patience and understanding necessary to work students in all capacities. I have learned how to address each student’s unique needs and help integrate that into the overall learning environment. In addition, I work with parents to discuss the child’s progress. All of this is done in a professional and confidential way. I know the importance of making each child and family feel safe with my care, and I strive to make sure that need is met. In addition, my office work at Iowa State has given me the organizational skills necessary for this career. I had to ensure all files were kept orderly, all paperwork was done in a timely manner, and that all files were kept confidential. I assisted in transmitting paper files to a computer system, so I am also familiar with computer work. I was responsible for greeting students when they came into the office, which involved working with students in crisis. This helped me gain valuable skills talking with students in a professional and caring
